  1. Thanks Rich, I've basically gone for making waypoints at every point on the tracks, and linking them into a route. It takes ages, but it's fairly easy! Thanks again. Sam.
  2. I've downloaded some walks to do in Austria next month, but when I load them in MapSource they appear as tracks rather than routes. I'd really like to follow them as routes, so my GPS points me to the next one and beeps at waypoints etc. Does anyone know how to do this please? Many thanks, Sam.
  3. Thanks for that guys. annoyingly, the 'data' comes up in the spreadsheet as '4 mph', rather than just the '4' that I would need to do any proper analysis. does anyone know how to get the mph's out?
  4. I really want to transfer my track logs from MapSource into a spreadsheet program so I can plot graps of (for instance) how my speed alters over the walk. Does anyone know how this is possible? Thanks!
  5. I'm thinking of placing a cache up a tree, there are a few good climbing trees near where I live. I was wondering, would it pass the review thingy? I mean, would the reviewer think it was dangerous to climb a tree and archive it or something? I've had to lift my buddy up so he could look in caches, and put my hands in all sorts of dubious and dangerous places to retrieve caches before. So, does climbing trees constitute 'dangerous'?
  6. Thanks for your responses everyone. Do you think Garmin might consider adding a key-lock feature when they make a software update?
  7. I've got a Garmin Venture HC. Anyone with anything similar will be familiar with the annoyance of rubbing the little 'nipple' joystick/button whilst the unit in in your pocket or bag. After 1/2 hour of having it stowed in your pocket, you find you have selected all sorts of options and settings without meaning too. The clever thing for Garmin to do would be to have a lockable feature, whereby one presses two buttons simultaneously to lock/unlock the unit before/after placing it in your pocket. Does such a feature exist? How can we encourage Garmin to add one to a software update? Does anyone know a clever way that I can stop rubbing my nipples whilst I'm GeoCaching?
  8. Which point on Earth is furthest away from caches? The one that is. Where is the highest altitude cache? Way up. Where is the lowest altitude cache? Way down. What area has the highest density of caches? The area that does. Which cache has been found more than any other? The one that has. Which travel bug has travelled the furthest distance? The one that did. Which travel bug has visited the most caches? Ditto! The one that did. Which travel bug has been travelling the longest? The one that has. Who is the oldest cacher? The oldest Cacher. Who is the youngest to have located a cache unaided? The youngest to find a Cache unaided. Wonder if I will get flamed for this response? Humor/laughter is the best medicine. Interesting questions, but I would think that the real answers, would require a tremendous amount of research. I see several different Topics for Post in this question. I guess a moronic response is better than no response at all. Anyone know the real answers?
  9. I stumbled accross my first GeoCache *accidentally*, whilst out on a walk. Something (I don't know what) made me look under the roots of an old fallen-down tree. My mate thought I was bonkers, digging around for no apparent reason. After moving some rocks i discovered a tupperware box full of tat. I opened it and read the accompanying note, and was excited straight away. I wrote in the log book (was that bad form?) and on my return to my computer I logged it, and ordered a Garmin Venture. Whilst waiting for it to arrive, I've tried to hunt another one near where I live, but with no luck. I cant wait for my GPSr to arrive!
  10. Does anyone know the answers to these GeoCaching questions? Which point on Earth is furthest away from caches? Where is the highest altitude cache? Where is the lowest altitude cache? What area has the highest density of caches? Which cache has been found more than any other? Which travel bug has travelled the furthest distance? Which travel bug has visited the most caches? Which travel bug has been travelling the longest? Who is the oldest cacher? Who is the youngest to have located a cache unaided? Let's find out the vital statistics of GeoCaching!
  11. Thanks for your replies, gals and guys. I really appreciate it, and it's a big help for a nervous newbie 'cacher. I've read some very poor reviews for the Garmin Topo maps that you can buy to supplement the basemaps that come with the unit. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are there any alternatives to the Garmin Topo maps? And has anyone tried those? Once again, many thanks, Sam.
  12. Hi all, could you please answer some questions for me please? The GPS (Garmin Venture) that I'm considering buying comes pre-loaded with 'basemaps'. Are these inferior to the ones you can buy and load yourself? Do I need to spend extra to buy a fancy map from Topo, etc? And what are the benefits of getting a map extra to the 'basemap'? I'm so excited about buying a GPS and finding my second cache (I stumbled across my first one as a muggle, and that's what got me interested!) Many thanks!
  13. Hello, I hope somebody can help me choose a GPS device I'm very strongly drawn to the Garmin Venture HC, and I see it comes with 'base'maps loaded. It also says that 'other' maps can be loaded (from Topo, for example). Does anyone know if the 'base'maps are enough? Are these the maps shown on the screen in the publicity photos? Or will I need to fork out more to get 'proper' quality maps on my device? Many thanks, Sam.
