  1. I fit into both categories - extreme outdoor sports (would claim to be an extreme athelete) and techno geek/nerd* *Note the difference between and geek and a nerd. Geek = someone whose life is dominated by technology Nerd = someone whose life is dominated by technology and is proud of it. 31 male Eagle Scout 1 dog techno geek (closet nerd) played a little D&D Mother says I'm intelligent love gadgets love outdoors love cycling For me the best thing about geocaching is that it is a sport you easily take with you anywhere you travel. Not a lot of equipment to haul around. Always places to cahce regardless of where you are. Many other hobbies/sports are not so versatile. (that bike doesn't fit so well in the suitcase)
  2. The eTrex line will tell you the GPS accuracy. Like the others said let you GPS settle down for a few minutes and check the accuracy (and number of satelites) before marking a way point.
  3. Milbank, let me know if the book is worth it. I have learned a lot on the forums.
  4. Pretty sweet avatar (must give credit to AmishHacker for creating it). Seamus thanks for the help. I uploaded it but never "selected" it.
  5. Seamus, where do I hit "select avatar"??? I have logged out of groundspeek forums, and geocaching.com, logged in, checked my "edit profile" and my avatar shows up there. Clicked re-register , clicked register on the forums and logged in.
  6. test hope it works this time
  7. B&B you say you don't ask permission. Does your cache approver ask you if you got permission? If they do what to you tell them?
  8. I am trying to get cache permission for a micro on a college campus. Anyone have experience getting permission with colleges? Also anyone have general advice on how to ask for permission, what to say, how to explain the sport? (This is my first hide)
  9. Well so far I would have to pick AmishHacker's first submission as #1. Nice job, this one screams avatar. I also like Chris S's submission which is simple yet clean and professional looking. Finally, Johnny Stalker I love the swirled logo, it is just plain cool. Nonetheless, I guess I had better play by the rules and use something that doesn't cut up the official logo. Anyone care to submit again. To all thanks so far. I am overly impressed with the suggestions made so far.
  10. When you search by zip code the first cache that comes up is closest to you. From there caches are listed with their distance from your zip code and what bearing they are from your zip code (N, NE, SW, etc.). I pick a cache to go after then a second one close by. Then any other caches I pick I look for caches in the same direction I will be heading from the first cache. This way I hit several in a row and don't have to drive back and forth.
  11. Wow! I am impressed so far. Can't wait to see what else AmishHacker comes back with.
  12. Okay, I've been a member a while and just had a new born baby so I haven't had time to create a custom avatar. If I had the spare time I would have gone after more caches by now. After reading the forums daily I am feeling left out. Send me your ideas, especially if you can create avatars easily. I am Geocyclist, I ride both road and mountain bikes. (4 color Geocaching logo with some kind cycle icon on top?) I guess I will figure out some sort of prize if someone sends me an avatar I can use.
  13. The Vista is a great unit. It has an electronic compass and the most memory of the eTrex line. It is compact and easy to use. Even if I upgrade in the future I plan to keep my Vista because of it's compact size; it is good to use for hiking. My Vista has performed very well and I have not had any problems with it.
  14. Yes, well said. $30 a year is a bargain for quality of web site supported here.
  15. I love mine, it's compact and easy to use with one hand.
