  1. I am in Birmingham, but you probably want to join the North Alabama facebook group, if you are on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/groups/NorthAlabamaGeoCachers
  2. Such a shame that GS was too busy working on creating (then removing) Challenges to add this option. A very minor feature compared to the effort that went into Challenges. And I'm a programmer so I have at least a bit of an idea what would be required. Also such a shame that cachers can't or won't take the extra step to actually log the trackable they took. Why not also add a prompt after the cache is logged, something like "This cache had trackables listed. Did you take a trackable item? Please enter the code now: ________". I think this would help a lot since the user would not have to take the extra step to hunt down the trackable page. This is far past due. And while you are at it, how about automatically disabling the cache when a "Needs Maintenance" or "Needs Archived" log is not responded to in a month or three? Missing trackables are one thing, abandoned missing caches are far worse.
  3. This is what I get for staying off the forums for about a year. I want in, how do I get the beta. I have a Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) running 2.2. Unless the beta is in the market I won't be able to load it without rooting, AT&T has non-market apps blocked "for my security". LOL
  4. I have a Moto Bravo but probably works the same. I had the same issue at first, but when the little USB notification comes up in the status bar at the top of your screen (when you plug your USB into your PC), pull down your notifications and tap on "USB Connection". Then it gives you a list of ways to connect. "Motorola Phone Portal" was the default on mine, which made the PC recognize it as "M860" or whatever. Change it to "USB Mass Storage" and BINGO your phone will now be recognized as a standard SD Card/USB stick!
  5. Not to get too off topic, but you said "Nuvi". What model Nuvi? I think this could be a big part of the problem also. Not to "hate on" Nuvis, and some of them are very accurate in "pedestrian mode", but if you don't have it on pedestrian mode it will try to lock on that nearby road. And some older Nuvis are about as accurate as an iPhone 3 (i.e. not very).
  6. I'm going to try to load my son's Geomate this weekend, so I'll be trying it then. Are the errors anything specific?
  7. Congrats! I had the pleasure of meeting you once at a CITO event near Birmingham. I enjoyed our brief visit as we looked for a matchstick holder 25ft up a tree! Unfortunately I am not going to be able to get near your caches either, but I'll re-post it on the Alabama forum. I know a few of them probably are close to finding all of yours already!
  8. From another 'Bama lifer', that picture/art makes no sense at all. None. Horrible.
  9. Well I'll be... That ought to teach me to read the datasheet better. Maybe trying to read it on a Blackberry while climbing a steep hill wasn't the best idea. Correcting pronto, and I guess I need to make another visit to find the actual mark. Luckily it's only about 10 miles from the house.
  10. I would like an opinion from some of the pros on this one. I logged this one as destroyed on GC.com (which I will change to NF if I need to) but have NOT logged with the NGS yet. I was considering submitting an NGS log for it but wasn't sure if it should be "NOT FOUND", "FOUND POOR", or attempt to have it "DESTROYED". The disk was on a rock under an abandoned LOT. A GEOCAC find in 2002 was good, no photos but the guy found lots of BMs then, most with photos so I don't think he fudged it. He was a good cacher and sheriff's deputy who has now left the cacher game. The place is now a teen hangout/party place, and the disk appears to have been pried from it's spot. DH2512 - Disk Damaged And I'm not going to try to submit the LOT, I know they don't want Intersection station reports, but here's the link for reference and to show I was in the right spot, under the LOT. Unless it moved... DH2513 - LOT Found
  11. I just downloaded and installed this program, and something caught my eye in the License Agreement. So I read it. BEST EVER! Hilarious. That made my night. Hah, thanks. I honestly don't remember what I put in there. Spaceballs, I think? Starts like it's a Star Wars thing then wanders into some Angelina Jolie and 'Gia' stuff... LOL. Excellent, nice touch. I suspect occasionally some nonsense must get stuck into some of those agreements that no one except lawyers ever read all the way through. I may start actually reading through them just in case.

  13. There is info on how to do this, and where to find the perfect set of custom POI icons with a beautiful BM icon, on the GSAK forum. I use the GSAK macro GarminCsvPoiExport-v2.gsk to generate the files which I then load to my Garmin GPS as Custom POIs using Garmin's POILoader program, free on the Garmin website. I have 16,000+ BMs in my part of the state loaded and the BM icon shows up. There is no differentiation using this method, but there probably could be.
  14. This is getting too interesting. I have found two county GIS disks here by dumb luck, I know there are plenty more out there. I really didn't think there would be online info but now I'm going to have to spend a night searching and maybe contact the county, and possibly the city as well.
  15. Nice one! Definitely better than the generic ones here. I bet you will find many more in Austin if you look for them. I suggest major intersections, especially downtown.
  16. Thanks again for all your work on this. I'm knocking off a few Alabama counties, one I just did was Elmore, which was surprising since there are plenty of adjusted marks as well as some historic easy find scaled marks that have been logged on GC plenty of times. I've submitted a few recoveries from my trip last week. (as RTR)
  17. The City of Birmingham Engineering Dept. places benchmarks in curbs here, and none are listing in the GC or NGS database. Sounds like a city or county mark. Here is a City of Birmingham curb mark that I listed as a waymark... http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM996W_..._Benchmark_H_12
  18. I just stumbled upon another useful conversion page, so I thought I would add it here for anyone searching in the future... I'll be using it to convert my coords for NGS submission, it's a lot easier than other methods I have found. GC.com Waypoint Conversions
  19. If it makes you feel any better, the Waypoint box was not in the obvious blue box all this time. There used to be a little check box for "add waypoint" between the log date and the description area, and if you checked the box coords entry fields would magically appear in that spot. So it was easy to miss if you never checked the box!
  20. Actually more than that, and it is fine with me!
  21. Yes Dave, thanks for your work and I'll try to take into account your tips in the future! Feel free to use as many as you want. I'll also be submitting more recoveries to the NGS now that I've figured out how easy it is. Quick question Dave, yesterday I photographed one on a roadside that would not have shown up in a photo from 20-30 feet away, witness post was gone. Is it acceptable for your needs to draw in an arrow pointing to the mark location, or should I just center the mark location in the shot?
  22. Here's another... DH0942 This one has my HH2 coords added, not sure why since the next posted find was in June I wouldn't have thought they would have updated yet since DavidD said they like multiple coords... I guess I should start submitting more to the NGS.
  23. Look at my log for this BM... GC.com DH2379 Then look at this datasheet and click on the "Photographs are available" link... NGS DH2379 I had no idea they would pull photos from GC.com! Too bad they don't update the coords also. I don't mind... just good to know. Maybe I should submit my "GOOD" find to the NGS so they will have a find on there also.
  24. How do we do that? Just put them in the description submitted or is there another way?
