  1. What an accomplishment, ranks up there with Lucky Lindy flying across the pond. Wonder how much fumes he had left in the tank.. Sure hope they report that. Brian
  2. Gotta be the best FTF prize I have ever seen...
  3. Never thought that, actually I admire his entrepreneurial spirit.
  4. Jeremy... you da man... Thanks so much! Brian
  5. First of all thanks for a fantastic web site and for providing the special services to premium members ( the queries rock). Now my question: I registered long ago on Sep 26 2001 as user bthrel, used the account to find approx 6 caches, and then went AWOL for a while. When I picked caching back up I couldn’t remember my old account so I had to create a new one (brian_41) which I recently re-named geodinks. I’m not really concerned about the 6 finds I had under the bthrel account, but would like my geodinks account to reflect that I have been around since Sep 26 2001 Is it possible to modify my current account (geodinks) to reflect how long I have been around geocaching? Thanks so much Brian P.S I made this request via e-mail several weeks ago and received no reply.
  6. I sent a account support request 1/26 and other than the canned "got your e-mail" have yet to hear anything back. Brian
  7. I would like to be able to save the setup of the GPS after you tweak all the settings to your likeing. That way you could reset to different setups depending on the use. My 0101 worth Brian
  8. Thanks for the replys I now have all my answers. Robert. The cache policy site is out of date, Monte Sano State Park has recently (sometime last year) approved caching in the state park due to the diligent efforts of some of the local ALa cachers. Thanks for the links though. Brian
  9. Thanks so much guys.... happy hunting Brian
  10. I need to ask some questions of this person, could you reply to this thread or send me your e-mail?? Thanks Brian
  11. Hello all; Been looking for awhile (43 found) and now want to place a few. One area I know for sure is ok as its a new land trust area and caches are welcome on the land trusts. The other are is where I have the question. In Alabama there are many caches on the wildlife refuges (public access lands), but in the information for placing caches it says not to place in these areas. So... 1. Who approves caches in North Alabama (so I can contact Her/Him with some questions) 2. Have caches on Wild Life preserves been approved in Alabama Thanks Brian
  12. Exactly what I did, bought the 12 pack for about 4 bucks at Radio Shack, Works like a charm... Brian
  13. USAF 10 years, 1983-1993, 731x0 Personnel systems management (PSM). Got out when Clinton got in via a buyout reduction in force. Brian
  14. FWIW, I agree, but go here http://www.ocarc.ca/coax.htm and plug in rg-58, 30 feet at 1500MHz and you will see the resulting loss is 6.476dB.. In the example, 100 watts is put into a 1:1 SWR Load and the resulting power output is only 22.5 watts... If I understand that correctly one would have to have a antenna with more than 6.5dB gain to negate the rg58 coax loss. Bottom line is it really doesnt matter much in our application
  15. Did a quick search on MMCX connectors and they come in both varaitions (crimp and solder). Cutting down to length you desire and properly installing a new connector is the best way to go IMHO. Cheers brian
  16. Thanks NiclL, forgot the . Here is a great site for calculating coax loss http://www.ocarc.ca/coax.htm At GPS freqs you need to keep it as short as possible with quality connections. Brian
  17. I'll add my two cents here being a Ham (KQ4MM). In theory with any RF application being receving or transmitting the length of the feed from the antenna to the receiver/transmitter matters. The higher the freq (GPS is up there) the more it matters. Adding splices with connectors adds futher loss. Best situation is to have feed line just long enougth for application. If I remember correctly there is a approx 3Db loss per connector at 2m (144Mhz) lilely worse at the freqs GPS operates at. I could be wrong and will bow to any corrections Brian
  18. Knives… I have found them and have to admit I have left them on occasion, but only in very difficult to reach caches. Unfortunately the “hazard to children” thing is in my opinion ( I know everyone has one) a statistic of today’s politically correct, frivolous lawsuit, not responsible for my own actions society. Think about it. I have found a few caches in the woods very close to houses. Suppose one day little Johnny (10 yrs old) is playing in the rocks near the house with little brother Joey (5 yrs old). They stumble on your cache and find many cool trinkets (happy toys, marbles etc.) Little Joey thinks the marbles look tasty, puts one in his mouth, chokes. Parents find out where he got it, trace it back to you and sue. Now what, ban marbles and happy meal toys because of the hazard to small children? I promise to no longer swap knives as I see the general consensus it not to, but it still saddens me as to the state of today’s society. Brian
  19. I don't like this setting. I changed mine so it stays on. While driving down the backroads heading to a cache, I use the cigarette lighter adapter to power the unit. When I arrive at the spot where I will start hiking, I don't my GPS powering down when I unplug the 12V cord. It dosent shutoff right when you turn the car off, it prompts you to press any key in 30 seconds or it will shutdown.. all the while its displaying a 30 second count down on the screen. Bottom line... no sat loss when you switch from car DC back to batteries. Brian
  20. Thats a great tip. I have several locations near me that are very dense and this will be very useful.. Just wish there was a way vai ximage to change the icons to represent micro, multi, tradidtional,, but I think cache mode only supports two icons of whatever you choose for found and unfound. Thanks again Brian
  21. Thanks for the replys guys.. I like the blue track idea and I also keep WAAS on, dosent seem to make a difference on the batteries. I dont do the map with north up as I only use the map when driving to caches or getting around town. Once at the cache I switch to off raod and mainly use the nav/compass page. I just noticed something cool lastnight. When running on batteries and following the road with the map, it will automatically turn on the back light when it prompts you for directions. Also, when wired with the optional DC power cable for the car it will automatically turn itself off when you turn off the car. Found 18 caches this weekend with mine and I must say its much easier to use than the old Mag 315 I had. Good Hunting Brian
  22. Sortof newbie here, and just received a garmin 60cs. Been caching for a little over a year now. Was wondering if you kind folks would share your favorite geocache settings/setup of your garmin 60c/cs GPSr's. I have only had mine for a few days now, but have pored over every thred here about the 60cs. Have learned much and discovered a few setting I like myself. One of which it to change the compass from cardinal letters to degrees/numbers (accessed via the menu whilest on the compass screen). Did a search for this and thought it might belong in the other long 60c/cs threads, but wasnt sure. If it needs to be closed or moved I understand. Thanks Brian
  23. USAF 1983-1992, Compuer systems mainly, postal as a second AFSC. Brian
  24. Just found this on page 81 of the manual (of the new 60cs I just received)... Just FYI Note 5 actually suggests Lithium in cold weather... Brian
