  1. I know C:Geo has had its issues with Groundspeak and is not quite in favor - but its the only one I can find that really does everything Offline - I recently ( July ) Trashed my Oregon 450 So after 4000 finds with a GPSr, I have gone to completely caching with the Galaxy S3 - Just thought I would share my experiences and what I do. Personally I have not had any issues - including power caching in Nevada with over 350 finds in one day. I also have Sprint for coverage and that has not been known for the best coverage in my area. With that being said I treat my phone and my caching trips like I would when I had the Oregon - I make sure I am set before I leave the house. Having the connectivity is only a bonus when I log from the field or have to access more logs. Most important is the offline map - which can be obtained from http://download.mapsforge.org/maps/north-america/ You can then set C:Geo to use either Google Maps or Use the map you download. Wisconsin is 44mb's so you have to download it on a computer and transfer via cable. Mine is always set to the downloaded offline maps because even when I have data connection it seems to be pretty slow ( Sprint ) This worked nice when I went to Canada in August - We drove so I had downloaded the Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ontario Maps so I could easily switch between them. I crossed over into Canada turned my data off completely and was still able to get a bunch and still had a nice Map. Second is the PQ's - for me I keep a pretty extensive GSAK database and always download the new PQ's into GSAK and run a few filters to remove caches that have multiple DNF's or Needs Maintenance logs. You can also Download PQ's directly from Geocaching.com You can create as many lists as you want in CGEO but I usually only have one main list. I import the GPX file from GSAK. I Use Google Drive - When I export it from GSAK I put it into my Google drive folder on my desktop and then it shows up on the phone you can import the file directly from the drive app on the phone. Third is logging. I am still experimenting with how I do it. You can save offline logs and then export them as field notes right to geocaching.com or what I have been doing is moving the caches from the main list to a "found" or "DNF" list and then when I am done I export that list as a GPX file and import them back into GSAK and use the GSAK Log feature - I did this in Neveda for the power trails. If I only found a few I will usually go the field notes way. Are there any other Cgeo users? What experiences do you have? One thing I am looking for is a better map - the mapforge maps are great for in town but I Had the USGS Tops on the Oregon - and while they are very adequate it would be nice to have a little more details out in the woods. The only other thing I miss is the track. There are other apps you can use and to be honest I never used it much before but if I ever got lost Smile I do usually set a way point ( You have to add a way point to an existing cache ) when I am going to be wondering from the car. The other thing is Battery - I did buy an extended battery and I keep the original battery with me when I am on all day runs - It is just something I have to be conscious of little more - plunging it back in when I get to the car and so forth but even the 14 hour days in Nevada I was never worried - got back to the hotel with 36% left.
  2. It was very recent - last few months that I was able to do this - I would click on A PQ on the map, and then it would let me click on another PQ - and it would filter and only show what was in the 2 PQ's - no limit as I could tell I have 5 set up to cover my area that I am in in any given week... O well
  3. The PQ preview page used to allow you to view Multiple PQ's at the same time - I travel often in the same area and I want to make sure the PQ's I have set up cover me from Start to Finish on my trips - as I find more, and others get published/archived obviously my radius changes. Every few months I would go back and reset up all my Pocket Queries to make sure I have everything covered. Now when I click on a PQ it shows it, but when it defaults to the "search" tab of the PQ page and when I click on the PQ tab it resets and shows ALL caches and then will show the PQ I clicked. So short of it is it will only allow me to see one PQ on the map and I need to see multiple PQ's is there still a way?
  4. I am surprised there isn't an organized affiliation - at least not one that is easily found. When I type California Geocaching Association Wisconsin is the second result Way to go my WGA!
  5. Thousands of garmins vs millions of phones. I am a serious cacher, and believe me your right when it comes to accuracy and battery life, but I would put money that more caches where found with a phone then gps, and if not that is the trend. Buddy of mine in Korea 9k finds, just recently switched to using a phone full time. He got an external Bluetooth Gps and carries an extra battery. Swears it amazing never having to worry about PQs and logging on a computer.
  6. Unfortunately your in the minority - the majority of cachers and the reason it has grown so much are weekend cachers who use their smartphones.
  7. Unfortunately that makes sense While I love my Oregon 450 - and it is my primary geocaching device - if anything where to happen to it I would think long and hard about spending the money to replace it. And ultimately It would come down to spending the money on a dedicated GPS or sticking it into the top of the line smart phone ( If I don't already have it ) I currently have the S3 on Sprint and Use a combination of the Geocaching App ( when I have good data coverage ) and C:Geo when I don't If ground speak beefed up its offline capibilites then I would never have to even think about a replacing a broken GPS
  8. Has Groundspeak said anything more about personal cache notes being included in PQ and GPX files?
  9. I would like to see the ability to specify a range of found it logs. I know you can click "Found in the last 7 days" but what about going farther back? I am interested in this for winter caching mainly. If I know there has been snow on the ground for 30 days I would like to specify to bring back all logs found on or after XX date. I currently use GSAK for this exact function but if it could be built in to the PQ I can get a ton more caches on the PQ.
  10. I had no idea this topic would garner this much of a response and several weeks later!!! I plan on keeping up with it, and hope people are getting some value from my work other then me. I also plan on using geocaching.com challenges to get more people interested in it.
  11. That is an awesome Idea Max!!! They only downside is that my area is also loaded with Puzzle Caches, and most people will ignore new ones but there are a few that would be game to play.
  12. Can you give me an exsample of your challanges? I would love to get people Waymarking, and we have several hundred with a 20 miles or so of my city....
  13. I have been Geocaching for a number of years, and have decided to give Waymarking another shot. ( My closest Waymark is a McDonalds, and that didn't thrill me three years ago). I have been Waymarking again now for a few months, and have started placing them as well. My question is this.... is it worth it? In my area there are only a handful of people and most just like to place, no seakers. I have placed 15 in my city and not one has been visited in about a 3-5 month time frame. Does ground speak have any plans to promote, or even update the Waymarking site? or is this a lost child that wont die? I really like the idea, and once you get pasts the starbucks and subways(waymarkings lamp post caches) , there are some really interesting things to find and seek out. How do I get my area more involved.... I really want to be active, but if I am the only voice in the woods is it worth yelling? Andy Appleton WI
  14. It is set for 1.0 Would 1.01 do anything? I can try it tonight when i get home.
  15. Yes tried a pq with around 450 caches in it same thing....
  16. Not to steal this thread but I am having issues with my endura out& back. I have had it since january and it is up todate, but ever since the new PQ structure on gc.com the unit will not register geocaches. It still registers the wpts files, but not geocaches. When i run the PQ download it, unzip it and drop it to the gpx file on the endura nothing happens. I have tried both the 1000 limit direct download from the site and 500 through the e-mail, thinking it may be a corrupt file with the new proccess or a file size issues. Like is said it reads the wpts file but not not the geocache file. I have also tried putting them on the SD card to no avail. Please help!! Right now the endura is a paperwieght without being able to load caches.
  17. Actually EnduraExpert I tried that, I thought maybe it was an issue with a corrupt file caused by the new file type. So i did try one and limited it to 500, the files size is only 2.1mb..... Thanks for trying. Any other suggestions?
  18. Can someone help me? I have a Endura Out and Back and ever since the update to geocaching.com ( new PQ's, and 1000 limit) My Endura will not read the geocache GPX file. It reads and loads the child way points, but not the geocaches. I have tried different directories, ziped un ziped, folder no folder and nothing works, but no matter what i do the way points show up and the geocaches dont. Any help would be appreciated.
  19. I think that is the funnies thing i have ever read!!!
  20. Well Hello Newbie!!! We were all once young and green, and gold? HUGE cheesehead here based out of Appleton! Have you gotten the cache @ the veterans memorial on Armed Forces Drive?? If not you need to really cool cache, and it gives you an excuse to be near the shrine or heaven or nirvana or Lambeau field. I myself consider myself a newb with only 600 finds ( cachin since 2/24/09) We ,make alot of cache runs into the green bay area so maybe we will see you on the trails!
  21. This post is for a broken Mag. Triton 400. I bought the item used, but i used it for 6 months without any issues. During a cache run, it slipped out of my hand and cracked the screen. The unit still powers up, but you cant see anything other then the light on the screen. Asking 30 or best offer. Buyer pays shipping. Will only ship in the lower 48. This would be perfect for someone who has a triton 400 and needs spare parts. SCREEN IS BROKEN. SCREEN IS BROKEN. This is just for the unit, the coord is NOT included. Thanks!
