  1. I have never met CCCooperAgency, and never have had the opportunity to find any of her hides. But do recognize the name, (From reading in the forms). Like I said never met her or found any of her hides, so I can not defend her, however I would give her a benefit of the doubt. Why would I do that? Well all we know is that your log was deleted, it is very possible that the logbooks were replaced, or soon will be. Unless you have verified that the required maintenance (Replace logbooks) was not done in a reasonable time frame (week to ten days?). Then I would say you might have a complaint. I understand that having a log deleted is a bit frustrating, but I would not take that as the log was not replaced. I say that if the log was deleted then is very likely that she read it and knows that she needs to do something. Jim Kc8bdr
  2. I include one in my caches as many will not have a writing implement when arriving at a cache. I know that I have managed to arrive at a few caches with out one and was quite happy there was in the container. I do agree that pens and pencils will punch holes in a bag, (I will replace the bag if I have one with me) in my hides I tend to not place the pen in the baggie I just leave it floating around in the cache, however both of my current containers are small. I have only 121 finds but in that time I do not recall there being many wet logbooks as a result. The few wet logbooks I have found were not in a bag, and the container had either failed, was left open or had been damaged. I suspect that if there is no pen or pencil in the container there will be a fair number of logs on line with no correlating log in the logbook. When out caching I try to have extra pen and pencils with me so I can leave one in a cache if there is not one there already. Jim Kc8bdr
  3. I do not own a gun at the moment, there is a big part of me that would like a gun, but I have asked myself just what am I going to do with it? I do not feel the need to use it for protection. I do not hunt (at the moment, I have no desire to carry/drag it back to the truck or clean it, sounds to much like work) I could get in too competition shooting, but at the moment I have come to the conclusion that I will not spend the money on a gun as there are other things that I want to do with my money. In the years ahead I just might take up competition shooting, or may even change my mind on hunting, and then a gun will make sense. So as asked what do I carry for protection? Nothing! In my 42 years on this planet I can not recall a single time where I even felt threatened to the point I needed any weapon. I realize that could change at anytime. I Suppose I could learn self defense. I do recall one incident years ago that I was going to pick up the young lady that I was dating (She is now my wife) As I got out of my car in front of her house there were two guys that were in the street (Two houses from where I was) one in his car the other (Standing next tot he car) had a baseball bat. I did spot the bat but did not think to much of it at first, but did, keep an eye on them. As I got to the house he guy in the car left, the guy with the bat turned and challenged me to fight. Well there was still at least 1 hundred feet between myself and him. I did not reply but just when in and called the police. Did I need any weapon that day? Well I say no, I had plenty of time to retreat in to the house. I do not recall if the police ever caught up with him. I feel that I am more likely to get hurt as a result of an accident. And that is what I try (Still need) to prepare for. The other thing is that I am very seldom anywhere that there are creatures that I would need any weapons to protect myself from. (Except the human creatures) Am I being completely clueless? Maybe somewhat, but I have made it this far, and I am still here. I do carry a Gerber multi tool and a folding box cuter I suppose I could use them as weapon if the chips were down. Jim Kc8bdr
  4. Like The Laughing Gnomes I will carry some pencils, logbooks, zip lock bags. Pens, Small things like that. Anything else I email the owner or note it in my log. I am willing to do what I can if I see a problem before I go out. Jim Kc8bdr
  5. I kind of wish that I could move out that way, I would love to have such a wide open area to hide a few caches. Unfortunately that won’t help you as I am fifteen hundred miles east of you. I don’t know it this might help but you might check out Geocacher University. http://www.geocacher-u.com/ Even after 120 find (Not all that many) I still learn something reading through that site. Also there is a brochure http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/brochure1.pdf You might print a few and hand them out to people & or put them up on local bulletin boards. Jim Kc8bdr
  6. I post that then managed to get through. Thanks anyway. Jim kc8bdr

  8. I recall not only the incident but also saw the Discovery Channel show on it. I had a couple of thoughts on this idea. While I interested in where this bank is, I might hunt that cache. The one thing that kind of hit me is a cache in the locations that the gun men died, let me put it this way I am interested in the story and where this bank is I am not so sure I really need to know the exact spot where someone died It would be enough for me to say one died over there, and the other down the street. To actually stand on the spot, sorry not interested. On the flip side, I am over 2000 miles away, I don’t know if I will ever make it to California again. (Would like to however) Jim Kc8bdr
  9. I am not at 120 finds, at find 100 was just another cache for me, at least nothing more special than 99 or 101. With that said, there are people that will pick a cache that is different in some way (Project ape cache). Or maybe a cache at the end of a 5+ mile hike. I thought about doing a cache that would be unique for me but I just never got around to figuring what I wanted to do, then realize that I had just logged my 100th find. I went back and edited my log for that one. Jim Kc8bdr
  10. I quite often do not trade anything, but when I do I will record what I trade both in the book and on line. Like others here I will go back and read my logs. The other thing if I am in a hurry I am not likely to even look to see what there is to trade, much less trade anything at all. Then it is date time and TNLN, TFTC. Then re-hide and I am gone. Jim Kc8bdr
  11. I have a cache that is in a tree stump that the center is rotted out deep enough that the top of the container sits near ground level. All I did was set the container down inside it and cover with some bark that was on the ground near by. Jim Kc8bdr
  12. I found one that traded hats, I did not have a hat with me to trade. I had gone to this one retrieve a travel bug of mine. I also have been thinking about doing a book themed cache myself. Thanks Jim Kc8bdr
  13. What is the largest cache you have found? I have an ammo can that stands about 15 inches X 18 inches X 8 inches. I found a cache that was in an identical ammo can. I have thought about placing the can I have but need to find a place for it. I have thought it would be neat, if I had a piece of property to do it on, to put up a garden shed as a cache. Jim Kc8bdr
  14. It looks like I am in the majority here; I carry with me extra logbooks, pens, zip lock bags, pencils, & sharpeners. I will replace the bag the logbook is in if ripped. I have also added a logbook when needed (Leaving the original in place) minor stuff. I don’t think I would replace a container. While I agree that the owner is responsible for maintaining there hides, but there are times that even the most responsible owner can not get out to a cache in a reasonable time. Jim Kc8bdr
  15. I tend to not trade anything when I find a cache, I will move travel bugs from time to time I have put things in a cache on many (but not all) occasions. I try to keep my fanny pack in the truck with a few trade items in it. However it is mostly pens, extra logbooks, zip lock bags. Stuff to do a bit of upkeep when needed. For me I enjoy the hunt more than anything else. If my enjoyment was based on what there is to trade, I might have given up after a few finds. I think that the trading of things is a key part of geocaching, but for most it is not the most important thing. Jim Kc8bdr
  16. I am sitting here reading this thread and decided to have a look at some caches around me and see if one has left a GJTB near by (It was 3:30A.M. at this point). Well what do you know there is one in a cache and it is only 7 miles away, and it is accessible 24 hours. I grab shoes & GPS and out the door I go, I scored a find on the cache at 4 A.M. First night caching I have ever done. It is now 6 A.M. and time for bed. Jim Kc8bdr
  17. I have had it happen twice. I had found a cache (about the 18th I had found) and was putting everything back in the ammo box when I heard voices, I quickly closed the cache and replaced it. I was hoped that I would get far enough away as to not give away the hiding spot. I had gone about 20 feet before I encountered a couple with there dog. We said hello as we passed (I feeling a bit relived that I did not think they saw me replace it) It was a few days later looking back at my log that I realized they were also caching, If I had been aware I would have stopped to talk and even to watch as they did there search. The other time I was in northern Michigan camping and caching. I had found one and was within feet of my truck when a couple (Different from above) asked if I was geocaching, there son was a geocacher we ended up talking for a good half hour. It has been a year since I have met anyone on the trail, I am about due for another. Jim Kc8bdr
  18. We had a rest area on I-75 north of Pontiac, Mi. (South bound side) that had a wooded area that had this same reputation. There was a great wooded area with trails that would have been great for a cache. When the rest area was redone a few years ago the wooded area was fenced off and no trespassing signs put up on the fence. The fence seems to have fixed it, as the meetings are no longer taking place but we also lost one great place for a cache or two. Jim Kc8bdr
  19. OK so I had my brain tied behind my back when I posted this. I have not had a need for a route PQ since that night, that may have been why I have not had a problem since. DUH!!!
  20. I had the same thing happen about three weeks ago. I also ended up deleting and starting over, only to have it happen again. Being that I needed to get out the door at the time I just filtered out all but what I wanted in GSAK. Dump to GPS then out the door for the hunt. I have run a few PQ since without any problems. Jim Kc8bdr Now that I poted this it will happen again to me.
  21. I find this quite interesting as I do not use a pole at all and have never felt the need for one. I have always like to have my hands empty when hiking, which is a big reason I got a camelbak as I hated having a bottle of water in hand. However I may try a walking stick since reading this and see if it works for me. Jim Kc8bdr
  22. I ran two never run before pq’s this morning and both hit my in box in less than 5 minutes. Jim Kc8bdr Edited to add: both were run in the last hour.
  23. It has been a couple of week since any thing has been posted. Thought I would offer at least one cache for the list of trucker friendly caches. GCN81M Perrin, in the city of Troy. There is a large parking lot that will allow the biggest of trucks to park within 600 to 700 feet of the cache. I do have my CDL Class A drivers license, but am not employed as a driver at the moment. Thanks Jim Kc8bdr
  24. Is there anything new in this? I ran 4 PQ to run around 8 P.M. eastern last night. (Before I was aware of the server problem) I have also run two more in the last hour. As of now (9:00 A.M. eastern) I have not received any emails from any of them. Yes all of the PQ did generate. Thanks Jim kc8bdr
  25. It is my personal opinion, but I am going to side with this as being a government building. Also I would not hide one at a Post office or for that mater hunt one there. I just would not be comfortable in doing either. Thanks Jim kc8bdr
