  1. I don't think you can do that right now. Although In This Topic it is discussed and that feature is being evaluated for the future.
  2. Only a little off topic maybe...when I go to check the newest caches hidden on my "state page" there is no indication that one of the new caches is or isn't a MOC. I'm a member, so not seeing a MOC isn't an issue. But if I click on the cache link and go to the page and find it is a MOC, now I will show up on the audit log - even if I don't want to. I never even knew it was a MOC. Could those be identifed on the "state pages?"
  3. Paypal'ed for 5 just now. Thanks.
  4. Here's the Library's link and description. Register at 269-1791. Scroll down to "Hidden Treasures of Indianapolis," then to "Geocaching....ubder the George Kessler section. Geocaching Library Page
  5. It doesn't look too much like the mug shot of this guy who was arrested. Jesse Payne - arsonist, not artist
  6. It must be a local cacher "teaching" it, but I don't know who. The person had contacted me and another cacher last year about helping develop a couple of Indy Parks "theme" caches around George Kessler and his parks (Brookside, Ellenberger, Noblesville Riverview?) but that idea has apparently been changed to the May 15th program. This is the profile of the woman who contacted me about the Glendale program- her email is on the profile: HistoryHunter
  7. There will be a program at Indianapolis's Glendale Mall Library on Sunday May15th at 1:30 p.m. The topic is: "Geocaching: The 21st Century Treasure Hunt In Indy Parks" It will apparently be geared for beginners. I received this information from an individual at the Indiana Historic Landmarks Foundation who asked that it be passed on. I'll probably go to see what others are learning about the hobby.
  8. So I have some questions/observations; I was looking at the possibility of placing a cache on a DNR property, so I decided to look at the new "guidelines." The location I was going to place a cache already had a Letterbox - even by the same name as I was going to use! Makes me wonder if Letterboxes aren't covered by the DNR. That would mean 2 identical pieces of tupperware in the same hollow log - One needs a permit and the other doesn't. Maybe I'm reading something wrong there. Nature Preserves, Historical Sites & Properties Administered In Whole Or In Part by The Division of Outdoor Recreation AREN"T SUITABLE FOR GEOCACHING (my emphasis). In other words - don't even try to get a license. OK, so I looked; what exactly are those properties of that division: Knobstone Trail, a couple of off-road places AND EVERY CITY TRAIL IN THE STATE IT LOOKS LIKE. If that's true - a whole lot of caches will need permits or pulled. I also notice that the one Nature Preserve listed for Marion County - I thought it was a City Park!! Anyway - 2 main points: is there an inconsistency regarding letterboxes, and are all of the local bike or hike trails listed on the DNR's Division of Outdoor recreation really "off limits" for caches - or am I being too strict in my interpretation?
  9. I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, and a couple of search strings didn't return anything, so.. (gets ready for flames..) Would it be worthwhile, and do-able, to add the number of caches someone has hidden next to the number they have found on the cache log? I know...another stat to worry about..another part of the numbers game. I know the specifics of the hides won't be visible, but I think the number of hides is an important part of evaluating a cachers comments in their log. I've also grown to "respect" the cachers who set out caches. Seeing someone with 300 finds and no hides - hey, I would like to get a chance to hunt some of yours too!! Of course I can click on their profile to see the number of hides, but I could do that too if the number of finds wasn't listed. Just an idea. There may be many reasons to not do it that I haven't thought of. Or maybe others would like to see it.
  10. It should also be at least 0.10 miles from the nearest other exhibit.
  11. Whatever is in it, the entire exhibit should be about 100' away from where it's listed in the Smithsonian's brochure.
  12. Same thing is happening to my new one today. But my account page shows it awaiting approval, so I guess it's OK.
  13. I see them both, landscape with power lines and the urban logo
  14. I have had the need to temporarily disable 2 of my caches recently. When I "enabled" one of them last week, I had to write a note - great, I like that feature. When I went to enable the other one today, I needed to edit the cache page first to change some information. I did that and I clicked the box "is cache currently active" and submitted. After this, the cache showed up active, and I hadn't had to write an explanatory note. I wrote a note anyway later, but there is no "green light" symbol. Maybe this is an oversight in the system? Or should I not have clicked the "active" box on the edit page?
  15. I saw you logged one of my caches in Indy with one of these pens recently. I wondered what you were talking about . Now I know. By the way, I went to the cache the next day and changed the logsheet.
  16. This site does it too (hmmm..just noticed it's one from Markwell's page): Geocode
  17. I have seen this site referenced in other threads as a useful crypto learning tool but have no experience with it myself (..takes a long time to load): The Black Chamber
  18. I have the Nikon D70 and love it for times when I can pack it and carry it safely then have time to compose my shot and make various exposures to get the best shot. For me, this does not include geocaching. It's too big to carry with all of the other equipment I use (tripod, speedlight, lightmeter....). It's also just too expensive for me to feel comfortable carrying it into places I fall, get wet..etc like happens when caching - it's too much of an investment for me to risk - not to mention too much bulk and weight. I used to use an AIPTEK pencam ($60) for caching, but broke it recently and have now purchased a Canon SD 300. Smaller than a deck of cards, only 4 oz. and with 3x optical zoom and movie capability. I love it. I carry it in a small, waterproof, hard plastic case for protection. It has a small Lithiom Ion removable battery pack good for about 350 flash shots before recharging, and you can carry a spare if you think you'll really be taking a lot of shots before being back for recharging. Another thing to consider is that whatever camera you have - it's no good to you if you don't have it with you when you need it. If you carry a PDA or cell phone when caching you should consider one with a built in camera. I didn't have my Canon with me yesterday when I stopped to check out some of my flooded cache sites. But my Clie PEG-TJ37 pda has a built-in camera so I used it.
  19. 350 within about 29 miles. Indianapolis and nearby in general.
  20. Active duty USAF 1974 - 1981. Environmental Health Specialist at Vandenburg AFB, CA; Hickam AFB, HI,and Grissom AFB, IN. Most interesting were 6 months spent on the Field Radiation Survey team on Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1978 where all of the topsoil was being removed from the islands (they had tested nuclear bombs there in the 1950's) and made into a big concrete dome so the native islanders could be brought back to live there. I still glow - makes night caching easier
  21. Thanks for all the advice. I'll get back there soon and check things out myself. Funny how my memory played tricks on me - I remembered it as being set really well in the pier, but going back and looking at the picture I took earlier - I see it wasn't.
  22. I'm not a benchmark person, so excuse me if this is a silly question: One of my caches is near KA0269 and I advise cachers to look for it while they do my cache. the last one who did logged that it isn't attached to the bridge anymore (it was cemented in thoroughly). Should someone be notified? Anything?
  23. Thanks for the explanation. When did this start?
  24. My other caches that have been found many times in the last few months have an "updated' date of when they first posted or when I made a change, not the last time they were logged. Also GCK4TC was approved by "Purple Moose" (I still have the emails and remember seeing their name on the cache page) not Adm-webling.
  25. These 5 caches say updated 12/18/2004. I haven't updated them: GCJ2RN; GCK4YC;GCJH7Q;GCK1YK;and GCK4TC. Also the last one has a new approver listed. I have 4 other caches that seem to have the correct update dates. One cache I temporarily inactivated this morning has 12/18/2004, but maybe it should so I'm not counting it as wrong.
