  1. WHAT: Hike to get Stokes Petroglyph Trail Challenge WHEN: Sunday, July 27th - Meet at 9:00 AM WHERE: The entrance to Stokes State Forest is located off Route 206 at N41 11.082 W074 47.827. From there, take Coursen Road as far back (north) as it will go. Turn right and head to the Stoney Lake parking area and we will meet there. DISCUSSION THREAD HERE
  2. I find that myself and others occasionally use existing threads to post invites for people to get together for hikes and other activities that might not always qualify as an "Event". The only problem is that if some people have already read the thread on the original post, they may not think to reread it. I thought it would be worthwhile to have a single thread that people could post dates, times and meeting locations for invites to others to join them. So that the thread is quick to read and scan, the following guidelines might keep it a bit more "pithy" (ie., brief): Please post only a short description of your activity with the date, time and meeting place coordinates Create a LINK to the thread where there will be more information Post the "I'll be there", "Plan to attend" comments on the other thread (not this one) Hopefully this provides a useful thread to keep you aware of individual and group activities.
  3. Once I have a cache out for 1 year with no finds I pull it unless it is a difficult or challenging one. In certain areas that I consider my favorites (Sparta Glen, Sparta Mountain, etc...) I refresh my caches about every two years to draw everyone back to the area. If people suggest a cache is a "classic", I will leave it out. Usually for me though, the bears determine how long my caches are out. Before I switched to all metal, I had a 25% "eaten" rate.
  4. --> QUOTE(brian b @ Jul 7 2008, 08:44 PM) 3548211[/snapback] Can you give us some meeting coords/parking coords? I couldn't find any on the link to the gc page. I am good to go . . . just need to know what time I should leave to make it in time. (I also noted that there are a couple other caches in the area, including an Earthcache. Will any of these be along our route of travel?) --Brian The entrance to Stokes State Forest is located off Route 206 at N41 11.082 W074 47.827. From there, take Coursen Road as far back (north) as it will go. Turn right and head to the Stoney Lake parking area and we will meet there. There are 4-5 caches in the area to do and I believe the earthcache will be along the route. It won't be hard to hit most of them.
  5. Let's plan for Sunday, July 27th at 9:00 AM. That way if it turns out to be a hot day we'll be able to get up and down before we bake.
  6. Let's plan for the weekend of July 26th. So now take a look at your calendars and see if the Saturday or Sunday looks better.
  7. Are Saturdays or Sundays better for you who are interested? Considering one of the weekends - July 12, 19 or 26. Let me know which of these look most favorable.
  8. Finally Lacrosse season is over and I will have a few weekends to myself. With that in mind, it is about that time of year where I need to go do a maintenance check on this cache. Anyone interested in joining me and making it a group hike? Post your interest and we'll set a date a few weeks out so you can plan for it.
  9. Congratulations! No wonder I haven't seen you at work recently . Keep on hunting!
  10. It is my understanding that when you use FrontLine you should not use a flea or tick collar because it can absorb the FrontLine weakening it effectiveness. I work for a vet and this is what we advise our clients. Interesting. I'll have to follow up on that. How does it absorb it - through the skin?
  11. If you like the woods in NJ and bring your dog, it is really hard to avoid. Bailey has had the vaccine, takes Frontline and wears a tick repellant collar and was just diagnosed again with both lymes disease and the disease you mention. With her big black coat it is nearly impossible to see them. If fact, not that long ago, we came home from a hike and she laid at the feet of my wife and daughter. When she stood up there must have been 30 ticks on the floor (talk about freaking out the wife and kids - I've never seen so many people up on the back of a couch). Anyway, this is about the fourth time for her.
  12. As of 8:15 AM, it is sunny and clear in Sparta. The Weather Channel shows a big green mass (rain) headed our way but I estimate it is 3-4 hours away. So a 10:00 AM start should get a few groups out without a problem. I will be heading out the door soon. Keep your fingers crossed.
  13. For all the volunteers who will help by leading a group tomorrow, here are the temporary cache coordinates for those I set out today for the event (these will not be registered on GC.com).: Hanging Around (a micro): N40 03.106 W074 32.740 Rock Sandwich (regular cache): N41 03.178 W074 32.594 Old Man In The Tree (virtual cache): N41 02.881 W074 32.617 Bridge Out (multi cache): N41 02.904 W 074 32.815 [stage 1] N 41 02.969 W 074 32.853 [stage 2] Our goal is to introduce new people to a variety of different caches. I will have cheat sheets for the group leaders (and gold coins ). Thanks for the help!
  14. Thanks. I'm shooting to leave the house (North Brunswick) around 9:00. Will there be an official call posted online by someone, or should I just roll over and go back to sleep if it's pouring? I'll post something before I leave. It sounds like it might be ok in the morning and then get worse after noon so we may get it in. But bring plenty of bug spray - it is going to be very wet and I'm sure skeeters will be in full force.
  15. They have asked that all the group leaders be there by 10:00 AM. PS - Watch the weather as they note that steady rain/thunder/lightning will cancel the environment activities (which includes us).
  16. On Sunday, May 18th, Team Divi Divi and I will host an introductory course in geocaching at Ryker Lake, Sparta Mountain. The event listing is posted here. We need volunteers to help us take groups out and about throughout the day. For anyone who shows up to help and actually leads a group, I will give you one of my new personal geocoins in gold (only 20 made) as a token of my appreciation. We are expecting a pretty sizable group of non-experienced people interested in learning about geocaching. We will be hiding a number of temporary caches to facilitate the experience as last year we found some people struggled with the climbs associated with some of the local caches. Even if you don't want to lead a group, come join us for a great event.
  17. Very nice! I first met Surfcaster at his event and have read about his selflessness in participating in helping other do his tree cache, seems like an awesome individual. Good deeds usually get repayed in treble so he got good things (and sounds like well deserved things) coming. BRAVO!!!
  18. Did the down trees still have needles? If so I'm betting it was weather related I couldn't say as I was driving by at a good pace rushing to get to the falls before running out of time for another commitment. The cache closest to the area in question is this one.
  19. Yes that's the park I went mountain biking in - basically a ride along a cliff. There are only a handful of caches in there (3 or 4) use The Mouse Hole (GCGDRD) as orientation. There are also a number of urban caches in New Paltz down below Mohonk House. The New Paltz Stop & Shop (GCZOY6) will orient you to those. There are a number in between these two points.
