  1. I am really sorry to hear that Jim was a great guy. Draegon and I went to find keenher kache with Jim and we had a great time. I also enjoyed his company at the picnic back in april. Lets remember the time he replaced a cache that had gone missing in Mt. Airy forest. Jim used to make jokes about never getting to be first finder to a cache because of the "Vultures" as he referred to a select group of us at that time. So I dedicated my first find today to him. Stonelicks secret Jim I am glad to have met you and I will not forget the caching we shared.
  2. Disregard this post. I got the links above to work
  3. I think it's probably safe to say that if you buy it in the U.S. you will probably get the america's highway basemap. The atlantic basemap covers europe and the pacific basemap covers Asia. But you could always e-mail amazons customer service. They usaully respond promptly. I hope this helps. [This message was edited by PewterZ on October 18, 2002 at 10:56 PM.]
  4. Hey Rubbertoe, I didn't know there was a second tunnel out there. Though given the terrain I guess it's not that much of a surprise. Where is the second tunnel at. If I end up going out that way again I might want to check it out. As for the condition of the cache. I think it's been that way for a really long time. I hope someone does make it out there to pull the old one and hide a new one. It took me 2 trips to find it and it was one of my more memorable cache hunts. Did you hunt for thisone while you were in the area. I believe it is missing. Draegon and I hunted for it back in August to no avail. The cache owner seems to be active but in Maryland. So if someone want's to adopt moonville They might think of contacting trail 26 owner also as they are not to far apart and both are great area's but to far away for me to maintain.
  5. I think it would still work well under most conditions. When it has lost sattelite lock it probably gives the last known coordinates. So if they go inside you'll probably have a good idea of where they are anyway. Also I don't think you could travel to far without picking up a lock frequently unless it is intentional. If your child is lost in a remote forest where it is hard to get a signal at least you could view there last known position. It would be a place to start the search. But personally I think if they were old enough to go wandering off unsupervised that you would have a hard time making them wear the device. So in my opinion it's a way to make a buck off some of the more parinoid parents.
  6. Thank you Datum and Strix! I've been wondering what it was for a long time now. I was getting ready to buy one of those audobon society field guides to fungus. I probably will get one any way as I already have some of there other guides.
  7. While we are on the subject I also found this strange star shaped fungus while caching. At first I thought it was just some artificial floral litter. But when I (being the inquisitive person I am) felt it I realized it wasn't fake but some sort of mushroom. I have yet to figure out what it was. It was growing along a creek bed in the cincinnati area. If anyone has a clue as to what it is please let me know. Here is a link to the pic.
  8. I found one of those last fall while caching. After finding this unbelievably big mushroom I did some research and I also believe it to be a puffball. Here's a website link if you want to know more.
  9. In my experience's almost all the tupperware containers I have found that have been out for a while have had a moisture issue. It may be geocachers getting in a hurry and not sealing the container properly or the temperature change causing it to expand and contract but something always seems to happen to them. Though if everything is sealed in ziplocs it usually doesn't hurt anything. I have also seen animals chew them up. That's why the 2 caches I have placed I used ammo cans. As for the concern of rusting as long as you don't sand all the paint off and leave the metal bare they should last a really long time. Also the local flea markets are usually a good place to look for ammo cans. I got mine for five bucks each. You can find good deals online also but after shipping costs you might not save so much.
  10. I bought this pack at REI. I have had it for about a year now and I couldn't be happier with it. The sleeve where the platypus bladder fits in is insulated and it keeps water cold for a long time. I use it to go hiking and bike riding. The thing I like about it most is the way it conforms to my body.
  11. Have you went and checked the cache site lately. It's possible that someone stumbled upon it and thought oh cool I just found a bunch of old records. Then people who searched for it were unable to find it and didn't log not found because they plan to try it again another day. I hope this is not the case but it is worth checking out. If I were closer I would hunt your cache just because it looks like a really cool place to explore from the topomap. Good Luck!
  12. Not all of the state parks in Ohio allow hunting but most of them do. As mentioned above there are designated areas. Not the entire park but the designated areas are usually pretty large. For more details you can check out there website hereor the ODNR's website here
  13. Well you can enter the coords into mapquest or topozone manually and get a map of the area. Though that would be time consuming if you had a lot of them you wanted to check.
  14. Would it be difficult to set it up so that you could go to the cache page click on log a visit but instead of logging it as found have an ignore button there? Leaving no message on the cache page, but moving it to the found list on your local cache search or by your placed caches list. The cache would still be visible but would not be in your list of caches you haven't found in your nearest cache search.
  15. I am about 20 miles east of Cincinnati. Rubbertoe I saw your footlevel cache a couple of days ago and I am just dying to make time to come out and do that one! It looks like a lot of fun.
  16. I prefer to give the parking coordinates. I don't however think that anyone should ever have to give them. The reason I like to give them is because there is always going to be people who don't do there homework first and I feel it is a great way to minimize the amount of bushwacking by the unprepared. Also now that I think about it. All the map print outs and cache pages etc. add up to alot of paper & ink waste. Add that to the growing numbers of cahers and you have quite a bit of paper and ink. I know it's not much in the big picture of waste but the small things add up.
  17. I just read this and was wondering if any of the other numbers you can enter can do anything? Also I was wanting to know the same thing about wass so thanks for posting the answer.
  18. This isn't exactly repellent but when I go hiking or caching by myself in the summer the bugs drive me nuts. But when I go caching with my teammate they don't bother me as bad. I still get a few pestering me but they seem to like him better. He doesn't smell or anything but he is a bigger guy and thus releases more carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is how most bugs find you. Other than that I have used deet products without any ill-effect's YET! -PewterZ
  19. I would have to say fall! Though it is a tough decision between fall and spring. What I like about spring is the feeling of life being renewed. It's a great time to spot some wildlife. What I like about fall is less bugs, The tree's turning colors, and less rain(=less mud). -PewterZ

  21. Maybe we could get some one from the hamilton county park district or cleveland metro park's to discuss the activity with them. Both of these park systems endorse the sport with their own programs. Well hamilton has placed their own letterbox's, but cleveland has their own geocaches. They would most likely atleast hear another park official out instead of just some guy who want's to play a game in the park. Anyone got connection's?
  22. Gosh these drug dealers really make me mad! My EX-girlfriend got messed up on meth and it ruined my life for time and I didn't even touch the stuff. Now these Jerks ( I really want to use much stronger language but I am refraining) are encroaching on the forest's which are my only sanctuary from the insanity of this modern day world. Man this really erks me!
  23. Hey Max thanks for posting about that. I couldn't find anything about it being taken from the market but, I did find some controversy about it. http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/living/DailyNews/lyme_vaccine0516.html I think I will wait a while before trying this vaccine.

  25. This topic got me thinking and I decided to do some online research about lyme disease. I found that there is a fairly new vaccine out for the disease. Sounds like a good thing for geocachers. Here is a link to more info. http://www.aldf.com/LateBreakingNews.html#PARA4
