  1. Whats the point of these souvenirs? I really dont see what they add to the experience of finding hidden boxes in interesting and new locations. I wonder if geocaching really needs all these "extras". I can see the point of Travel Bugs but the vast proliferation of geocoins leaves me cold and now souvenirs too. I suppose I'll be OK because as I never log finds online I'll not be exposed to them.
  2. Another good reason to use an ammo box or other good sized cache container.
  3. As I said in another thread, Geocaching.com is a profit driven company and TB's were invented to be another revenue stream. Lots of cachers get a lot of pleasure from them so are happy to pay to own a tracking number. As Team Noodles said, there are free alternatives.
  4. spot on this is an outdoor fun activity that gets you to places on your door step and more that you wouldnt have had the chance or even a clue was there,,i love this geocaching hunting and i only have an old Garmin and feel that good anoth for me over the summer my other half step daughter and Me have found some great places THANK YOU Geocache.com But geocaching.com is just as much a commercial, profit orientated company as Garmin. By voluntarily listing your caches on GC you are indirectly providing them with a profit just as buying chirps lines Garmin's pockets. I'm not arguing it's a bad thing at all, GC is a great site and I venture most people who use it agree it's excellent value for money but let's not kid ourselves it's a charity. Geocaching may have started as a hobby supported by a group of enthusiasts but it very quickly changed into the business opportunity it is today. Let's not criticise Garmin for also wanting to make a profit out of it.
  5. Why should I not be able to walk wherever I have a perfectly legal right to do so?
  6. Why exactly do you bother doing this hobby? You don't log finds, you don't place caches and you are critical of those who do Well thank you for your friendly reply. If you take the trouble to read my earlier postings you will find I play the game differently to you. No I don't log online but I DO write in physical log books. No I haven't placed any caches but given the proliferation all over the country I don't see this as a major problem. I may be critical of things I don't like, such as ill thought out cache placements but I thought my comment quoted was a positive idea. Sorry if you disagree but then again that's your problem not mine. You carry on "doing this hobby" your way and I'll do it mine and nobody else will be affected by either of us.
  7. How about detailing the longest series of well stocked and maintained caches in interesting locations, each providing an enjoyable and memorable caching experience?
  8. Ahh! This is going to put paid to those iPhone "Sent from my mobile" logs Excellent hehe
  9. I never log online, just in the logbook. Because of this I NEVER take trackables.
  10. Seems its not officially recognised by Groundspeak so I wonder how the Disney Corp will feel about sponsoring it when absolutely no mention will be allowed of their company in the cache descriptions due to it being considered commercial.
  11. Thank you Deceangi for that excellent history
  12. So who was reviewing UK caches before you started in 2006?
  13. Quite, my understanding is that jailbreaking can introduce as many problems as it solves. But (as has already been said), even if you could pair it, the mainstream applications have no way to select an alternative GPSr anyway. Just to clarify - i have an iPod touch (the non phone equivalent to the iPhone ) which has the same OS. I have jailbroken it and installed a cpmmercial Blutooth stack (or program) - no names here for fear of advertising So what happens when I turn it on? Well the Bluetooth connects to an external BT GPS unit and i can then run ANY GPS enabled application on the iPod. These include the Groundspeak application, Google maps, Memory Map with OS maps installed. They all work perfectly showing all the GPS features such as current location, direction arrow etc. Of course you can only run one at a time but the BT application works with them all.
  14. As has been explained GAGB have formulated a set of suggestions relevant to the situation in the UK. Groundspeak who own this forum and the Geocaching.com website set the rules and decide what can and cant be listed on the geocaching.com website. A team of local volunteers vet all applications and apply those rules and take into consideration the GAGB suggestions but are not bound by them. You have two realistic options: 1) Accept what the local volunteers say and publish your cache on geocaching.com 2) Decide to list your cache elsewhere AFAIK its not permitted to mention other local listing sites here but if you're determined you'll find a link somewhere. GAGB have no infulence over Groundspeak.
  15. Looking at the cache description it seems to have been written in the full knowledge that it would be the "magic" cache. How is that possible before the event? Also the Hidden date is a bit odd. Strange. But then again, at least its not a micro
  16. For instance, a few days ago a post appeared briefly here to publicise (deleted by moderator). This was published by a registered charity supporting people in the (deleted by moderator). But because they hadn't obtained permission to publish it, it was deleted very quickly. I have advised the charity to try publicising it via (deleted by moderator) instead as it seems a very worthy cause to me. Chris 10...9...8...7......
  17. mtn-man, do not rise to the bait any more. Moote has a long and "distinguished" history of stirring arguments in this forum. You only have to do a search to see that. Trying to argue logically with him is like trying to push custard up a hill.
  18. All that's listed on Geocaching.com are cache listings. Cache owners ALL hide behind "user id's". REAL personal data are kept hidden by Groundspeak. Get off your latest hobby horse and go and find some caches.
  19. Just interested to know what you're putting on it to consider a card of this size? Although I don't need 8GB I wanted to put on the UK (as usual) plus I'm off on holiday so I'm adding another country. Too big for 1GB so I went for a bigger card so I can use it for other things later on.
  20. Apologies again for causing confusion at my thoughts about having to fork out another £200 for maps if I wanted to use the iPhone app, even though I have already got a slightly older set for the PC. I also happen to think that having to pay £20 for the app alone, when the Windows Mobile version is free is a bit stiff. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear I had two moans to express As for the accuracy problem, it's irrelevant to me as I use a "proper" bluetooth GPS with my Jailbroken iPod touch and that give excellent accuracy. I was interested in the iPhone Memory Map app for my iPod, not for the iPhone itself as I don't have one. However, the point is moot as I can't afford another set of maps.
  21. Sorry keehotee you misunderstood. My complaint was having to pay £200 to replace my existing set of maps on the PC for an equivalent set just so I could use the newer version of the Memory Map software. I've already laid out a lot of money for my existing maps and all I'd like to do is to use the same data but with a newer version of the software. That's not possible due to OS licensing.
  22. Who gave you the right to steal someone else's cache because in your opinion it was in an unsuitable position? Common sense gave me the right, if it had been accidentally knocked off whilst being found It could have landed on a car windscreen, possibly causing a serious accident. Removing it was hardly a major crime considering a possible could be worse outcome leaving it there! Only takes a little common sense to realise that a small heavy object and a car / cars travelling at 70mph are not a good combination; sometime I think that Geocachers fail to use that sense! Which implies that the cache placer, and the reviewer for that matter, are lacking in common sense whereas you have the monopoly. It must be wonderful to know that one is superior to us lesser mortals.
