  1. Thanks for the link that's exactly what I was lookin for. Thorin
  2. I'm guessing TCTH is a typo given how close the F and C keys are on the keyboard I could easily see people making the mistake of typing TCTH instead of TFTH. Thorin
  3. I think the word you're looking for is "Neoprene". Thorin
  4. I don't have any suggestions on fixing it but you should definately invest in some PDA screen protectors. They use a mild adhesive that won't hurt your screen and you can replace them easily as they take some tumbles themselves. They're cheap and work great on digicams too. Thorin
  5. Ok GMRS noob here. Are GMRS and FRS compatible. ie: will they send/receive to each other (assuming the GMRS is within the FRS distance range). Thorin
  6. What do you think the D/T for this cache is? Is it a 1/3? or a 1/4? No sirree bub, it's a whopping 1/1. That's right, a 1/1. Give your head a shake and scratch your behind! Seriously, is there some way we could get the reviewers to ask the cache hiders to change these obviously misleading ratings? I would miss a hide such as this in my PQ's; I just happened to see this one because I've been spending way too much time indoors lately. So of course you emailed the cache owner and asked him about this right? You're 100% sure that the discussion between the owner and reviewer your ranting about never happened? The cache definately isn't situated similar to one of the places Mopar mentioned? Thorin
  7. Sounds like a good plan. Thorin
  8. For the same reason that there's so many questions and problems with Magellan. 1) People don't RTFM. 2) People try to make their gear do stuff it was never meant to do. 3) People are impatient. 4) People appreciate anecdotes, personal experiences, etc..... Thorin
  9. Ok I know I'm gonna feel stupid once I see the answer but: "try using a tin can lid from a #2 1/2 can" ? Cans are sized by #? I thought it was just by capacity. Is a #2 1/2 a normal condensed soup can? Or is it more like the diameter of a tuna/salmon can? Or is it big like a tomato sauce can? (I know those are kinda vague provided we've got people from all over the world but hopefully someone in North America will understand what I'm getting at and point me to a x reference of something) Thorin
  10. Hmmmm.... Sounds reasonable and fair to me. I'm sure conservation area's aren't going to allow co-ordinates that are 90-120' "soft". But I'm glad to hear that you think owners should be checking on their caches every month even though you seemed to suggest earlier they should never be expected to reply to emails. (I know checking on your cache and replying to emails are different things. But you're tone earlier was almost as if you thought owners should be able to basically place and forget their cache, and no that's not a quote it's just how your posts were coming across). Thorin
  11. Ergo sum, cacheto? Or I cache therfore I am. Cacheto ergo sum? (Maybe it'd be cachito /me scratches his head) I'm with most of the other's GeoCaching was just another exucse to get out and walk/hike. Thorin
  12. Oh well you can never please everyone. Keep of the great work Jeremy and all! Thorin
  13. No, that is not what I conclude. Ok fill us in then since we obviously misinterpreted this exchange. If your conclusion wasn't that courtesy isn't needed what was it? Apparantly. It's called courtesy. No, that can't be it ... did you miss the recent thread about owners not responding to verification e-mails? It seems most don't ... and those are "solicited" e-mails. "No, that can't be it ... " seems to mean it can't be courtesy. "did you miss the recent thread about owners not responding to verification emails? It seems most don't ... and those are "solicited" e-mails" unless your arguement is that because some don't, none should then why even mention it? It's completely irrelevant to the conversation unless you're trying to use it as an example of how things are and/or should be. Or maybe we're not reading it how you meant it? How does the seeming lack of values in kids these days have anything to do with my post bringing "any primary school teacher to tears." I know I can't come up with runon sentences like that one but I'm really not seeing the relationship you're trying to make there. Also note the subtle difference in what you quoted "people keep wondering" not "I keep wondering". I personally have no doubts at all what the problems are. Thorin
  14. Apparantly. It's called courtesy. No, that can't be it ... did you miss the recent thread about owners not responding to verification e-mails? It seems most don't ... and those are "solicited" e-mails. Wow you truely conclude that because a few people aren't courteous that automatically means that no one is and no one should be? And people keep wondering why the world is going to hell in a hand basket and their kids have no values <sigh> And yes there actually is a guidline that suggests you have to reply to email and inquiries about your cache it was quoted earlier in this thread. Thorin
  15. There's nothing wrong with dollar store swag just think of things that will be useful. Like mini-caribeeners (sp?), waterproof match containers (without matches so that it's cache friendly), etc.... Thorin
  16. Are you behind a coporate firewall? Our FW at work seems to mess up some of the redirects etc on gc.com while I don't have any problems @ home with my linksys router and sw firewall. (Same version of browsers are used in both places ... in fact it's even fine if I use my work laptop at home). Thorin
  17. What browser and version? Thorin
  18. Great source of outdoor equiptment information @ OutDoorReview.com The "REI Camp Dome 2 Tent" you linked looks half decent. It's always nice to have a low pole count since they're heavy and the more there are the longer it takes to setup. A few things I'd suggest you look for are: - side/top vents (aside from the door(s)) - aluminum shock-corded poles (fiberglass poles always end up dying prematurely) - full length pole sleeves instead of clips or segmented sleves (this makes single person setup alot quicker and easier) Something like the Eureka Aurora is perfect for the size etc that you need, though it may be a little more expensive. Youll have to decide how much you're gonna use it and how long you want it to last. ( http://www.outdoorreview.com/Backpacking,C...89_2955crx.aspx ) As for stoves and a water filter those can get into very long discussions. Again consider how often you're going to use it, where you're going to use it, and how long you want it to last. Things to consider for the stove: 1) Does it accept multiple types of fuel (this can be handy when you're out there and can't get white gas or propane or butane or whatever if you can accept different things you're less likely to get stuck) 2) Does it have a preheater on the fuel line? (some stoves just loop the fuel line over the burner) 3) Does it need to be kid friendly? Starting some stoves requires a little fuel to be expelled on to a starting pad (can't remember the exact word) and lit, as that burns off the fuel is turned on again. Sometimes this can cause flame ups (which aren't very kid friendly). (I personally use a Primus VariFuel stove but I don't think I'd want my 10yr old nephew starting it.) Things to consider for the water filter: 1) Does is kill/remove virii? (Does that matter wherever you'll use it?) 2) How much are replacement filters etc... (I use a MSR MiniWorks which myt brother-in-law got me and haven't had any problems with it except for the filter becoming waterlogged once when we had 5 people sharing 1 filter for 2 or 3 days, during which the filter was never removed and allowed to dry out). 19. I'm sorry you feel that way. If I'm giving advice that is bad or doesn't make sense then I'd like to know. I thought we were having a fairly good discussion I just don't see where you're getting threats and demands from. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, though it doesn't bring any resolution to the topic As I said please quote where I said anyone should threaten the cache owner? And where I suggest anyond demand anything of the cache owner. I just don't see where you're getting threats and demands out of that. You feel demands or see threats when people offer assistance or poitely suggest that something might be wrong? Thorin
  20. I don't agree with you that "soft" coordinates are necessarily an indication of "cache neglect." You'll have to ask the reviewers if they believe it is. While you're at it, you might want to ask them for the precise definition of "accurate coordinates," as quoted from the guidelines. As I've said multiple times not is isn't simply "soft coordinates" and yes it would be up to the reviewers as I've also pointed out multiple times. Go ahead. The reviewers have nothing better to do than listen to people whine about caches that others have found with little or no problem. If it'd been found with little or no problem we wouldn't be having this discussion. If your e-mails were to have a tone similar to your post, I don't believe the cache owner would be seeking, or wanting, your help. Incidentally, your posts have had nothing to do with "helping an owner to retain ownership." Rather, your posts have been about "how to extort a cache owner with threats of having his/her cache archived or taken away."My comment about "helping an owner to retain ownership." was in reply to my earlier point (and your counter point) regarding adoption/archival. And where did I suggest that anyone make any "threats"? (Please give me a quote here because I'm really confused where you came up with that). There hasn't been any problematic "tone" in anything I've said. It's all be straight forward and to the point. Have I instulted you somehow simply in trying to help you understand what you obviously didn't understand when I first posted it? If so I'm gravely sorry. That's also covered under the guidelines Thorin
