  1. I had one of these as my first handheld GPSr: Man was it dog slow. Took 20+ minutes to get a satellite lock with a clear view of the sky. Forget it if you were under a tree or in a car.
  2. MapSource will be "cutting" up the segments of City Navigator in future versions. I heard this directly from a Garmin tech when they answered a related question about interchanging City Select and City Navigator among the handheld and dashmount GPS'. (i.e. 60cs v. 2610) Yes, I heard this as well. When this is going to happen is up in the air If you want map software NOW and have to choose between CS and CN, then City Select is the way to go for a 60CS.
  3. That's correct. The only situations that I can think of where a preloaded SD card would be preferable is if you don't want to deal with the hassle of loading maps, or if you don't have a computer handy.
  4. No, you can use a blank SD/microSD card and load your own map segments from Garmin's MapSource CDs. Pre-loaded SD cards are available, but not required.
  5. Uhhh...no. The only reason City Select North America isn't on the 60CS's compatibility chart is because it is going to be discontinued. Before City Navigator was available for the 60 series, City Select was and still is the preferred software to use on the 60CS because of its limited 56MB memory. Although the maps are the same, City Navigator has larger map segments than City Select, which can be a problem if you're loading a bunch of segments onto the 60CS because there's a higher possibility you won't be able to fit all the segments you want on it. My recommendation is that you try to find City Select North America v7. It's still available at most outlets.
  6. This is a bug with the current firmware. Apparently this bug will be fixed in the next version. If you want it right now, you can download 2.62 Beta from the Garmin website.
  7. $75 to upgrade. Anyone planning to take the plunge? http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/cityselect.jsp
  8. I hope he sent it back to Garmin for "warranty repair"!
  9. It's only a matter of time until Magellan starts using some kind of DRM on their software, if and when they start seeing rampant piracy of their products. If you're going to use something, pay for it.
  10. Man, Garmin is just awesome. 3.10 was just out a few weeks ago.
  11. You are correct. The sticker on the battery door is the serial number.
  12. CS5 will take precedence over RR. If you want to switch, you'll need to turn off the CS5 map in the GPS.
  13. You can buy a USB-to-DB9 serial converter cable. Costs about $12 at CompUSA.
  14. Just as an aside, the Lenmar 1-hour quick charger I mentioned above has a built-in cooling fan that keeps both the charging unit as well as the batteries cool during charging. It may or may not improve the life of the batteries, but just in case.
  15. They sell for $12.99 for a 4-pack, but they go on sale for $9.99 occasionally. You can also buy a 1-hour quick charger with 4 batteries for $34.
  16. FYI, if anyone lives near a Fry's Electronics, Lenmar 2300mAh NiMH AA batteries are now available. I have 2 running in my 60CS and I'm still getting 3 bars after about 10 hours of use.
  17. www.onlinemarine.com has 60CS's for $408, and that's their regular price. I just had my local West Marine match onlinemarine's price and had my 60CS the same day.
  18. Try West Marine Products. If you're located in WA there should be a store nearby. West Marine will match any legitimate price, local or Internet. I brought in a printout from onlinemarine.com and walked away with a 60CS for $408.
  19. If any of you live near a West Marine Products store, they will match any price you find, locally or on the Internet. I just bought a 60CS for $408 and the City Select 5 CD for $107 from West Marine. They were happy to pricematch the prices I got from onlinemarine.com, who is also an authorized Garmin dealer.
  20. I'm picking up a new 60CS in a few days, so I'm unloading my old eTrex Vista. It is currently listed on eBay with no reserve price and starts at a reasonable (I hope) $190. The auction is scheduled to end Friday, March 26 at 19:44 PST. The package includes a Garmin soft case with belt clip. As an added bonus, I will load the unit with MapSource 4 USA maps of any region the buyer wishes. Here's the link: Vista Auction Thanks!
  21. Hi everyone, I'm new to this site. About to pick up a new 60CS in 2 days. Anyway, I have a suggestion for those of you who have scratches on your GPS screens. Do yourself a favor and buy a can of Brasso brass and metal polish. Costs about $4 at Target. Use a cotton ball to apply a thin layer on the scratched part of the screen and rub with a soft cotton cloth for a few minutes. Then buff with a clean cotton cloth. Walla, scratches are gone. Brasso works very well with almost any transparent plastic (i.e., watch crystals, calculator screens, uncoated plastic eyeglass lenses, etc,) but do NOT use it on touch-sensitive screens like the ones on PDAs. I've used Brasso on the displays of my Yaesu handheld ham radios with excellent results as well. Hope this helps.
