  1. I just downloaded a bunch of caches into my Oregon 450, and now it won't power up. It starts to. I get the Garmin logo and then the copyright message at the bottom of the screen, and then it shuts down. I switched out the batteries, so I don't think it's a power problem, and it does the same thing when I plug it into the computer. Have any of you ever experienced this problem? How did you fix it?
  2. Awesome! Thanks. Now I just need to find a place to hide these...
  3. Can I list my letterbox hybrid on geocaching.com and Altaquest.com? I've just gotten interested in letterboxing. My nine-year-old daughter enjoys collecting the stamps in a book a lot more than she likes signing logs in micros or even swapping SWAG. There are very few letterboxes or letterbox hybrid caches in my area, and I want to hide some. They seem to have very few rules over at AtlasQuest about letterboxing, but we seem to have lots of rules here at Geocaching.com, but I can't find many rules at all about letterbox hybrid caches, just that they have to have a stamp and coordinates. What do you think? Do you think I can list my letterbox hybrid cache here on geocaching.com AND over at AtlasQuest?

  6. I have Garmin Oregon and it has a button for Wherigo, so I tried to find a Wherigo cache once. It was out in a cemetery near Washington Park (Oregon). But I just went to the coordinates and punched the Wherigo button. Nothing seemed to happen. It started me through a tutorial that had something to do with astronauts or robots or something, but it didn't make any sense to me, so I gave up. Today I found another listing which mentioned a cartridge and when I went to the Wherigo website I saw that cartridges were mentioned there, too. Is there anyone here that feels like explaining this to me? Thanks.
  7. What if I decided to change it from a traditional to a letterbox hybrid? Would it be better to archive the traditional and publish the letterbox hybrid as a new cache even if its in the same spot? I have a popular cache that has been found over a hundred times, but I think its a really boring cache except that its right next to a totem pole, and I really like public art. Anyway, I just became interested in letterboxing, and I thought this cache would be a lot more interesting as a letterbox hybrid, but I'm also very interested in what you think. Thank you.
  8. I was wondering what would happen if I changed one of my caches from a small to a regular sized container. Would everyone's stats change? I mean everyone who found it when it was small, would all their small numbers drop by one? Would their regular numbers climb by one?

  10. I like the idea of two accounts because I think I would appreciate the log entries from two different people with different perspectives on the find. I thought about creating accounts for my children because i sometimes make them go with me, but since they can't log in and share their perspective I decided to give them trackables that will "visit" caches, so they can get counts and miles that way.
  11. I gave up using my phone and I got a Garmin because I didn't think the phone was very accurate. Since then I have gone back to the phone on occasion because it doesn't require a download and I can post log entries from the field, but I mostly prefer to use my Garmin because I can filter out the micros. The phone does become completely worthless when I go where there is no cell service. So use whatever you like. Don't let anyone give you a hard time about it.
  12. I only just recently discovered the "visited" log myself. And I have only just recently become properly aware of the need to choose caches carefully when placing travel bugs. It makes me sad when I think of all the cool travel bugs I put in risky caches. Live and learn. I imagine cachers will only slowly become aware of the benefits of logging only a few visits instead of a whole page of visits. Maybe we can come up with some sort of tutorial type paragraph to include on all our travel bug pages.
  13. I'm planning something that might be similar. There is a cool rails to trails project near my home. The trail is about 17 miles long and I am hiding caches about every mile. More or less. I'm not really a stickler on this point. I'm taking it slowly though. I placed two caches last month. I might be up to eight now. When I finally get them all placed then I plan to go back and put one clue in each of them that will lead to a final cache. My goal is to get people to hike the trail, but it wouldn't need to be attempted all in one day. And the trail has lots of access points so they might be able to do more driving than hiking. Lots of details to work out, but an enjoyable project to be sure.
  14. I post geocaching related status updates and photos on my Facebook page. I have my stats on my blog. I stitched a geocaching patch on my cub scouting jacket. None of this has resulted in anyone actually coming out with me. The only people who ever cache with me are my children and they must be coerced. On the other hand. I got interested when a coworker mentioned it and I doubt he even knows that he made a convert that day. To answer another part of your question: if you hide it, they will come. I decided for myself to give 10% back to the "community," so I try to keep my hide number about 10% of my find number, and I try to hide the same kinds of caches that I like to find.
  15. Thanks, MrsB. That helps a lot. I actually do have a bug that has been lost more than a year, and it even has ZERO logs. It was the first bug I ever put out, and it never was found, not even in the very first cache. It made me very sad at the time, but I got over it
  16. I bought about 30 of those $4.00 tiny trackable travel bugs (ingots, turtles and unicorns), and maybe half of them are lost. I just finished a multi cache challenge, and the finders prize is pretty cool. It's just a sticker, but its very clever. I was thinking it would be fun to turn it into a trackable item (like a wooden nickel) using a code from one of my lost travel bugs. Is this possible? Is it cheating? The icon would still show up as an ingot, turtle or unicorn, but I could change the name, so it might make more sense to the finder when it show up. What do you think?
  17. I was placing a cache tonight, and I wanted to place it approximately .5 miles from the parking coordinates because the whole point of this cache is to enjoy the hiking trail a little bit. I created a waypoint at my parking spot, and then I set it up to navigate me back to my parking coordinates. The idea was that I would walk along the trail, getting farther and farther away, and the compass would read how far away the car was; however, the trail turned back on itself, and the compass gives distance 'as the crow flies' rather than along the trail I was walking. I'm sure there must be a way to do what I want, but I haven't figured it out as yet, and I'm hoping that someone here can help me. Thanks!
  18. Yes, exactly. I read about the Allegheny Geotrail, and I know that people around here are crazy about the Lewis and Clark Trail. There are markers all over the place and we name elementary schools and universities after the pair, and I'll be surprised to learn that no one is organizing a Lewis and Clark geotrail.
  19. I just read an article about geotrails, and a Lewis and Clark geotrail seems to me like a no-brainer, so I wonder: is there someone already organizing one? and if so, how can I get in on that? There is a neat spot near my home with a monument to their dog and a plaza dedicated to their journey. This is in St. Helens, Oregon. Anybody here know anything about this?
  20. Ha! Ha! I got it! The pocket query showed up and I was able to unzip it and drag it to the right folder. he he he. I can't wait to go to morrow...
  21. Does anyone here use a Garmin Oregon 450 with a Mac running OS X? I'm trying to figure out how to get some waypoints into it, and its not working out so far. I set up some pocket queries, but they haven't shown up in my email yet. So I just previewed the query, and then downloaded the waypoints, but it downloaded as an .loc. I can't open it and I can't drag it to my Garmin. Do I need other software? like RouteBuddy?
  22. O cool, thanks! I'll clear my missing guys out of their caches then.
  23. I've had missing travel bugs turn up again, so I am hesitant to mark them as missing, but I hate going to a cache that should have a travel bug in it when it doesn't, so I'm asking for reassurance. If I mark my travel bugs as missing, and then someone finds them, can they be marked as found?
