  1. I'm only at 650. The lit says you can have 2000 poi's. Geocaches have a lot more data than a poi will. You can be out on a cache and not finding it, so you can go to the Etrex and read everything the owner said, and maybe find it. You can do the same with an Iphone, if you have coverage, at this spot. The etrex doesn't need coverage, because the data was previously stored internally. Some day Garmin will produce a gps designed just for geocaching. When they do I will be the first in line. I'm holding out for a device that can store at least 1,728,669 active caches! (My intent was to be factitious. Guess I should have used an appropriate emoticon)

  3. Most of those maps aren't routable, like the ones from garmin.openstreetmap.nl, but they will have contours and probably higher quality rendering of water features. Route-ability was not a criteria in the original post.
  4. It's Groundspeaks game so they can enforce the rules/guidelines as they see fit.
  5. I've been downloading PN-60 field notes via the Geocaching site for quite some time and all of a sudden it won't work. The PN is connected with the PC and the fieldnotes.txt file shows up on the "I:" drive but it shows no notes to download. I tried rebooting the PC, emptying the cache, and deleting the fieldnote file all to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions?
  6. In general the dedicated car units are not so great in the field. If you're interested in Geocaching you should get a handheld unit. I'll let someone else fill in the details.
  7. Sounds like you need to change your Proximity Point setting. Look at Page #37 of the manual. (Tools>Settings>Proximity Points)
  8. Common question. Do a Forum search for "Endura waypoints".
  9. Have you considered Delorme? (Sorry, I just realized Delorme does not offer GPS map products for the UK).
  10. The 1450LMT displays the name (Favorite) on the map of an individual cache selected from the Favorites list. In other words, if several caches are displayed only the one selected from the list will show a name.
  11. Try polishing the tips of the batteries with a pencil eraser.
  12. Mine had that prblem until I deleted the up date of the SD card. Are you saying that you are running on 1.5, after deleting 1.5.1 from the SD Card? Or you deleted 1.5 from the card, then donloaded 1.5.1 and installed it on the Endura? I recently upgraded the firmware to v1.5.1. The issue existed prior to the firmware upgrade. The Lowrance regional map card I speak of is a "read only" mapping card. It has nothing but maps on it. The device does the same with a blank, recently formatted card. It will not boot with any micro SD card inserted. It boots-up fine when no card is installed. Once the unit is booted-up and running the map card can be inserted and it will read the map card and work fine. The unit is out of warranty and I don't consider it a serious problem. I was mainly curious if anyone else had experienced anything similar.
  13. If it has an SD card chances are you might be using one that is too big. Each device has a limit to the SD card size that it will take. I just fixed a friend marine gps and it wouldn't take any updates on a card bigger then 128mb those are hard to find now a days. Check the owners manual for the recommended sd card size and try again. The Safari will handle up to a 32 GB micro SD card.
  14. Does the issue also effect magnetic (non-electronic) compasses?
  15. Have an Out and Back which will not boot-up with a Lowrance US Map card installed. Firmware is v1.5.1. Turn it on with the card installed and the main screen appears but the unit is frozen; have to pull the bats to shut it down. Remove the card, start the device, it boots up and works fine. It continues to work after repeated shutdowns and restarts as long as the card is not installed. The maps load and the unit works fine if the card is inserted after the unit is running. Anyone experience this sort of problem with an Endura?
  16. Can anyone with CabBat experience comment on what the average lifespan should be when used under 'normal' operating conditions? I'm not talking about how long it will hold a charge, but how long the battery should continue to perform as advertised.
  17. Huh. Must be the same folk who find my caches.
  18. I'm not a fan of button sounds and have them turned off on my handheld. However, it seems a little extreme to return an excellent unit such as the 1450 simply because the beeps can't be muted.
  19. Well, it's about 8 times bigger than the average civilian unit. It takes D cell batteries iirc, but it sucks those batteries dry so fast that it won't even do a continuous track when operating on battery power. All it will let you do is turn it on, get your current position (in military grid reference system), and then turn it back off. You can enter a few waypoints too. There is no map on the screen, so you will need a paper map with MGRS markings if you want a visual of your location. If you want it to work continuously, you have to plug it into an external power supply, like the batteries under the passenger seat of your Humvee. If your PLGR comes with all of the extras that belong with it, you will get some handy jumper-style clamps for that purpose as well as a round, magnetic external antenna. In summary, due to it's very large size, the PLGR will be much better for whacking a terrorist over the head than any standard portable GPSr with which I am familiar. Other than that, your civilian model will be MUCH better. That itself would be worth $200!
  20. I have no clue regarding the legality of possessing one of these things but I really can't imagine the DOD breaking down your door.
  21. According to a USDA Forest Service "OVERVIEW OF THE ROCKWELL PRECISION LIGHTWEIGHT GPS RECEIVER (PLGR)" the device with software retails for about $2200. This statement from the site might also be useful. Your receiver will need to be “rekeyed’ at least once a year as the Department of Defense (DoD) changes the access code yearly. Any shipping of the PLGR will be done through Federal Express or UPS. You will be provided with the proper mailing labels prior to shipping. Receivers should be shipped standard overnight Monday – Thursday only. PLGR_Setup
