  1. Actually I think both of those phrases are acceptable. There is no intent in either phrase to curse, swear or offend. Now if it were a "F"ing instead of a "D", it would be different.
  2. The 'mostly middle class' bit is fairly understandable. A certain amount of disposable income is required - gps, any other fancy gadget so desired (pda etc), fuel costs etc etc. Also a PC or some form is required, even if you are just printing off cache pages, you need to be able to get to them. Also some level of computer literacy is required - I'm guessing most middle class folks that work would need computer literacy at some degree in their jobs. None of this explains the cultural issue though, so I'm at a loss there.
  3. The thing is that the 'mega' part of an event is a self fulfilling prophecy. There has been an event in Harrogate every year since 2004, but the only one that went mega was the mega event. If it had not been set up in the first place to achieve mega status then it would not have happened.
  4. Any chance that discussions regarding 2010 onwards could be talked about on another thread? It hardly seems fair to the 2009 organisers that the majority of this page has been taken over by discussions for further in the future. I'm also not sure that 'bagsying' all future years now is at all helpful given that 2009 is not done with yet.
  5. Well done on stepping up to the plate guys. Let's not have any complaints about location though - it wouldn't make much sense to have a 'central' mega event if all the willing mugs volunteers are in the South West (or is Bristol South now according to geocaching regions ) We'll be there more than likely, having camped further than that several times in the last 3 years or so (I'm assuming there will be camping?)
  6. Evidently not. So, rather than laughing at my evidently pathetic assumptions about a sample of a population, I'd prefer it if you'd take the time to offer me some of your presumably superior knowledge to explain why my simplistic assumption is incorrect. From a devils advocate point of view (and someone who has studied statistics), the US population is made up of people of different social backrounds, urban and rural areas, different occupations and different attitudes to the rest of the world. Groundspeak's employees work in IT and live in the same part of the US and are probably pretty much all middle class. I would say that given these factors, you cannot assume they are a representative sample of US citizens.
  7. Hehe - the area near the stump was used for parking for another event going on in the area at the same time. There were cars already parked there quite early on in the morning when we found the cache. Had we known, we may have been tempted ourselves.
  8. If it said you were kicked then it would have said who you were kicked by. Myself and Lucilla were the only mods 'on duty' at the time, and neither of us kicked you. You may well have problems at your end staying connected, but it doesn't mean you were kicked out.
  9. «|12:12:am|» * AliceB has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 250 seconds) No you weren't (see above)
  10. Well you could do if all the older caches had the state information, but they don't. I'm not sure of the best way to go about persuading people to add this information to their existing caches, since I guess over 90% of cachers in the UK don't read these forums.
  11. Can I put in a request for the smilies to be made bigger on this forum
  12. Sour grapes Oh and I find the manual ignore facility is really useful
  13. Another angle to look at this from would be think about which of these two situations is better: A ) Placing temporary caches for an event and allowing multiple logs on the event. The caches are then removed at the end of the event, and therefore do not have to be maintained by the organiser who potentially may not live close enough to do so. B ) Listing those caches as permanent caches even though they are really only there for the event, knowing full well that you do not live close enough and never intending to maintain them at all, perhaps attempting to find some poor sod locally to look after the boxes you dumped out. Before anyone pounces, I don't agree with either of these two situations, however one of these is deemed acceptable in this country and the other is not.
  14. I see some double standards here. Maybe someone in this thread would like to own up to logging temped or archived caches that have been found away from their usual location, ie brought to an event or maybe found in someones house while brought in for maintenence. (These are pocket caches btw, whether you call them that or not).
  15. I'm pretty sure most of it was optional and was only needed if you wanted to order food from the hotel.
  16. We cycled and cached that exact route in reverse last year (train from Thatcham to Great Bedwyn then cycled to Crofton to start there). It took us (2 adults) most of a very warm day but we ended up walking the last 5 miles with the bikes due to a split inner tube. I would think that you would be fine completing it in a day with the kiddies in tow.
  17. Quite right. Two insults in one day from the same person, who clearly thinks they are above the forum guidelines. The first insult was removed by a mod for good reason - you'd think some folk would learn.
  18. Of course, I meant Benchmarks FWIW, benchmarks don't count towards your finds count (see our finds as we have 18 benchmarks) - it's just a place to log them. Putting trigs on this site would add nowt to what already exists on the trigpointing site - apart from having the database managed by Groundspeak rather than in the UK.
  19. Funnily enough there are also some forum guidelines that tell you what not to do: "Respect: Respect the guidelines for forum usage, and site usage. Respect Groundspeak, its employees, volunteers, yourself, fellow community members, and guests on these boards. Whether a community member has one post or 5,000 posts, they deserve the same respect." Maybe YOU should RTFM.
  20. They'd never get listed anyway as their proximity rule is only 5 metres.
  21. I thought it was a pretty clear cut statement myself.
