  1. Looks like there will be 7500 acres which could possibly hold caches in Northeastern PA. Check out this article. They are also talking about expanding Moon Lake Park site for the Trash & Trout In PA 2004 CITO by several hundred acres.
  2. I have tried most of the other routes and really think CacheMate is by far the easiest way with the most features to get caches on your Palm. To get the logs on your Palm check out this very short tutorial I wrote. Using CacheMate Part 1
  3. Don't use DeLorme so I am not much help. You might want to try asking this on the GPSBabel Mailing List I am sure someone will be able to help you out.
  4. That's a very good question. I checked and couldn't find any licensing information from the website. I was looking at a map that PSUPaul dropped off last night and it has a small copyright on the bottom it may be OK as long as that stays with the map. Would need to check the license that came with the software though. Honestly it looks like they are just using the USGS topos and added shading for to show the 3D effect.
  5. Hmmm...I always thought the wilderness areas were set aside so that people could experience the outdoors and the unique aspects of different areas. God forbid people go outside with there eyes open. Seems they should have hid the Badlands better if they don't want people going there. But then again even if they did hide it all of us fosill stealing, plant trampling, dirt digging, animal chasing, rare bug eating geocachers would post the coordinates anyway.
  6. Wow! Thanks for all the replies. It just so happens that there is a disc golf course in this park and I am sure there is no map. I may asking for some advise on that and any hints about playing would be helpfull also I just bought my first couple of discs the other day might go give it a try this weekend. The NGTopo maps are nice but I'am wondering for this park to have them printed on brochures wouldn't it be expensive because of the amount of colors and shading? Maybe we could make Hi-Res images which could be available for download on the website which could be printed. I like the GPSvisualizer maps but have a question I can't seem to open them in Illustrator I have a old version not sure which one because I am not on the computer right now. Is there a plugin needed for Illustrator? Do you know is there a way to open the file in Macromedia Freehand? I have a newer version of that. I also have all the USGS topo maps on disc so the OZIexplorer option is also a possibility.
  7. Does anyone have any experience with mapping trails using their GPS? PSUPaul and I are working on a project to create maps for a county park. Supposedly there is 20 miles of trails in the park but no maps. We have access to Mapsend and National Geographics mapping software. Is there anything which is better suited to creating the maps we need? Personally I prefer to use open source software but would consider other programs. If you have done a project like this your advice would be greatly appreciated.
  8. I added your site to the links section of Northeast Geocaching site. You have mail.
  9. It's true free camping and all you have to do is spend a liitle time helping to promote Geocaching in a county park and we promise we won't work you to hard. Please volounteer at a CITO event near you if you are in PA these events can go along way as examples of why Geocaching shouldn't be banned on State Game Lands.
  10. I second er umm... third the vote for cachemate. It's a great program for the Palm and much easier to use than the whole spinner/plucker option. You can find a basic tutorial to help get you started with CacheMate .here.
  11. Download the program EasyGPS and open the file that you download from the cache page.
  12. Hey everyone did you hear about the geocache that the bomb squad...Oh wait I guess maybe you did.

    Conragulations what a milestone.
  14. This really stinks instead of worrying about some geocaches on SGL land their time would be better spent taking care of the dumping problems. I guess geocaching would be an easier target. Hopefully they will come to their senses and we can help them with that by doing a CITO.
  15. Your new forum is setup enjoy. NoVA Forums @ Northeast Geocaching
  16. Compass Course 101 now you know of one.
  17. Welcome to the sport it really is fun. You'll find that the boards here are pretty freindly and helpful. I love your signature "gaff it and throw it in the ice chest"
  18. Are you using a Magellan? I have experienced several time what is called the "Magellan Slingshot" when you pass the cache site and need to backtrack to it. I have heard that slowing down helps I usually stop for about thirty seconds or so when I reach 100 ft away it seems to help.
  19. I agree with N1AYS before you had a fancy GPS which holds your hand in the woods there was navigation with map and compass. Ninety nine percent of the time maps are printed using true north I think only once I have come accross a map that was adjusted to magnetic. They are very rare. One of the very first things you should learn when using a compass is how to adjust for declination. Sure if you are sighting in a feature and you want to walk to it the bearing would be magnetic but I really don't get why it would be useful to do that just walk to the ridge or feature you are looking at. If you are sighting in features so that you can figure out where you are on a map using triangulation you would need to adjust your bearing to true north so that it could be plotted on the map. Sorry Lep I think I have to disagree with you I don't think the cache reviewer should dictate that the owner needs to specify true or magnetic. Why not just hold the cachers hand all the way to the cache? I thought the point of this game was the challenge of finding the cache and figuring out where it is hidden. It should be left up to the cache owner. Magnetic Declination
  20. I almost bought a pack of these mints on Saturday but wasn't sure how they would work and put it back. I am going have to give one of them a try. I always put the log in a small ziplock bag. A freind of mine is a jeweler and uses small ziplocks which are great for real small Altoid tins.
  21. On the "My Cache" page click on edit your profile then about half way down the sheet there is a link to upload images. After you upload the image you will be taken to a page which will let you upload another image just click refresh and you will see a link for the newly uploaded image. Click on the link then copy and paste the URL. HTH
  22. A laptop and a PDA are quite different animals.so to speak. A PDA fits in yoour backpack if you are using something like CacheMate you'll have the clues with you on the trail if needed plus the cache descriptions.
  23. I agree this was a really neat cache and the history behind it is very interesting also. Here is MikeBurnsides website with stories about many of the caches in Ricketts and the surrounding area.
  24. I agree that Micros should have their own icons. I could never understand why they didn't they surely aren't traditional cache containers.
