  1. I bought my daughter a DOOGEE X5 Pro and it has all the sensors and so on needed for geocaching, and runs the official app fine - no lag. It is plastic, but was like £40.  I'm not sure if the model is available now, you may find places, or there may be a newer version with a similar or better spec and the same price.

If you provide them with smartphones won't they just use all the other apps and drain your data?  At ;east a GPS is a) rugged and B) limited to geocaching.

  2. The UK government setup our mapping service as a limited company a while back, so it sells its data rather than giving it for free to tax payers like your own!  You can buy their maps at https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/. They do provide free access to a variety of their databases, though.  If you can parse the geo data you can build your own maps from it at 10,000 and above 50,000 res, but not at the two useful scales (25k and 50k are what you say you need). But not the raster imagery. Bing provide access to OS maps, so if you have a free Bing developer account you can download a certain number of tiles a day for free.

Of course, Openstreetmap provides all this for free, and has much the same level of info (including contour info on the cycle overlay).Info on downloading map data is here: https://planet.openstreetmap.org/.  Doesn't have the same look, though!

  6. It's a nice additional feature but looks like it's buggy - An event GC797P1 is 39km from me but doesn't show up on Aug 21 (in fact I get no events on that day so I don't even see the '21').

The event does show up if I click the 'search events' link below, but of course that 'search events' link only shows up if I click on a different date - when I click where '21' should be, the 'search events' link disappears!

if the browser window is narrower than about 1190 pixels, the events applet magically pops to the left and far bottom of the screen - way way down below all the log activity.  Doubt many people will ever find it there…

Have you thought about setting up a Beta Testers group and having loads of us from around the world all test out your new features for a week or two before general release?

  7. I have received official notice that the new changes do apply to my four caches.

Thank you to those that showed their support.Yes as pointed out these caches did have a small percentage of cachers finding them and they all enjoyed the hunts and had fun.Isn't that what geocaching is all about? Is there no place for the rare and unique geocache on geocaching.com. All four were very popular and all logs were legitimate finds. Each trig and brass cap location had a separate ID name and number. No double logs were ever made at the same location by the same geocacher. There was a smiley face at the end of each hunt but I guarantee that it was never about boosting stats. There are way easier ways to boost stats. As for "the post a note" comments geocaching would not be very popular if you couldn't get the smiley after a find. It just doesn't have the same effect. All smileys were earned there was no one looking for loopholes to advance their find counts.

So after more than 15 years of promoting and supporting and enjoying geocaching it is a sad day.

It did get me thinking of back on one of my better days geocaching when I met this young cacher.Shortly after the visit Jeremy went out and found one of my brass caps. For the fact checkers he just found one. I know I could have taken him to another one but he was a busy boy that day :)

It's such a shame to lose these well enjoyed geocaches. Some of my YOSM finds have been very enjoyable and were a challenge to find, fantastic locations and views. I will miss checking if a trig point I pass could be logged as a find.

Thanks to outforthehunt for maintaining these caches and responding promptly to our finds for 15 years. RIP YOSM's.

  8. Train Times & Suggested Walks

Take Flight with your Hat on!

    Tuesday 30th July 12:00 - 15:00 at the Hatton Arms, Hatton, CV35 7JJ

Lapworth Walk (11km or 6¾ miles): Meet at Lapworth Station at 9:00

(train from Leamington at 08:30 or Warwick at 08:35 arrives at Lapworth at 08:49, but there's no reasonable southbound train).

If anyone would like this walk, post a comment here. You'd do well to work out some nearby mystery caches before the day, and you have around three hours to do the distance, should be perfectly possible.

There's a shop above the tunnel at Shrewley.

Hatton Walk (3km or 1¾ miles): Meet at Hatton Station at 10:45

Sharon from Sharant will be at Warwick Station at 10:30 to catch the 10:38 train to Hatton which arrives at 10:43. Meet on the northbound platform, or meet at Hatton! We will walk off from Hatton at 10:45 for a leisurely walk to the event.

Walk to Warwick after the event (6km or 3¾ miles): Meet at Take Flight with your Hat On! co-ordinates at 15:00 and Sharon from Sharant will walk down the full 21 locks at a leisurely pace towards Warwick and end at the Saltisford Canal Centre, Warwick.

Equipment - Canal towpaths can get muddy, so wear appropriate footwear! The canal path is suitable for pushchairs. And bring a pen!

Click here for the train times.

Don't forget to log a 'Will Attend' at our Take Flight with your Hat on! event

  9. All our side events have now been published starting Monday 29th July until Monday 5th August. (visit link)

How many geocaching events can we fit into one week? We have a wide range of activities, from ghost tours to hobbit hunting, from canal walking to kite flying, from big cats to dogs and from cyclists to teddy bears, there is something for everyone. Please help us by adding your "Will Attend" logs as soon as possible and don't forget to order your ghost tour and hog roast tickets.

We will also publish some caches after the Lets Go Fly a Kite event on Monday 29th July, which will be local to the Heritage Motor Centre.

    I'll be there, will you?

  10. Mega 2013 - Take flight with your hat on!

Why not make it a bit more exciting and walk to the venue?

    23081_100000709313816_2199_q.pngcanal%20boat2.gif

Sharant, the hosts, will start the day at Warwick Station at around 10:30am and catch a train to Hatton Station and walk to the venue from there. Have a look for us in our Mega 2013 Gear at the station entrance.

For the braver amongst us you can extend your walk by starting your walk at another station, e.g. Lapworth (7 miles) or even Olton (15 miles). If you wish to join other cachers on an extended walk, why not consider posting your plans here indicating the numbers of adults/children in your party, and your selected route?

Click here for the Chiltern Railways train timetables which are subject to change but we will publish the up to date timetable nearer the event day. Use this forum to help you plan your walk as well as getting back to your car, tent, or home!

  12. yea but to individually put 500 caches into a bookmark and then make a PQ that would take just aslong as what im doing right now.

I agree with this idea. Coupled with the friends list, to make the feature managable, would also add some value to the friends feature. But would it be a single or multi-select list? I guess single would work on Garmins, Satmaps where you can show multiple PQs, but wouldn't work on Android where you can only see one PQ at a time.

  13. I think it would depend a great deal on the write up. Strictly speaking, I don't think a man-made island would qualify. It wouldn't be an example of the geological processes that shape our Earth. The first guideline states: "They take people to sites that can help explain the formation of landscapes or to sites of interesting phenomena such as folds, faults, intrusions."

The guidelines refer to the forces that create the landscape, that does not require them to be geological, mand-made forces should be legit. But I agree you would need to work extra-hard to make it educational. Maybe see if someone has done any earthcaches in Holland, plenty of man-made forces affected the landscape there!

  14. The Mega 2013 Photo Competition is officially open but only runs until the end of April.

In order to produce a calendar we are running a competition to find some good pictures to use, representing each month of the year.

The competition is open to all members of the Geocaching community and any photo – old or new – can be used. Although hosted on the West Mids forum there is no need to be a registered forum member to take part as this has been set up so that it can be accessed without logging in.

    The URL is: http://www.wmcaching.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=75

Each entry costs 50p and multiple entries are allowed per person.

To see the current entries visit http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29076313/PhotoComp/index.html

  15. Somebody already mentionned this:

When viewing a PQ on the Google Map, ALL my icons, disabled or not, are greyed out.

Also, each of my PQs includes all the required caches, plus one cache that is thousands of KM away, and besides which, is archived! My southwestern Manitoba PQ includes an archived cache in central Arizona.

    Help?

Just a note - The other grey icons problem has been fixed - and I don't get this problem with my PQs!

  16. 14139: Activation Code Retrieval

Added new facility to obtain lost activation codes for purchased Trackables

Well, I have a Groundspeak Travel Bug that I lost the code for, this was going to be perfect!

    BUT

The new facility failed ;) - it said it the "Trackable manufacture" (btw typo there - should say "The trackable's manufacturer") had requested I use their website instead, then it sent me to Oak geocoins - completely unrelated company to my TB tag.

@GS lackeys :D - Get in touch with me through some trustable email addr if you'd like more details of this to help debug it... B)

  17. On the map, disabled caches no longer appear grey.

Also they are no longer crossed out on the cache list on the right - only when you click on the cache icon on the map.

PLEASE revert to the cache icon visually showing disabled caches, or allow me to deselect them as with finds/owned.

    (using firefox)

    Looks fine to me

    (using firefox)

    Mark

Hmm - I have a screenshot if anyone's interested - it all looked and worked fine last night. I only noticed because my nearest two caches have been disabled for months now, I thought they'd both magically come back from the dead (no such luck)
