  1. This is interesting, given the fact that I've been using a Magellan 110 with my Macbook Pro for a long time now. I can transfer caches to it fine, log everything, etc. Many times when you download the "plugin" software for connecting the device, you must redownload it again, or restart your Mac after and redownload before it starts functioning.
  2. I figured most would be 100% paperless and all that, I just seem to be more at ease if I have a hard copy on paper that I can readily look at...it's time consuming, but kinda useful in the long run should the site ever be down or my internet have issues, etc., and I can refer back to my notebook. I'm still trying to figure out my new Magellan 110, which is completely paperless, so for now I just use the notebook haha.
  3. ^^ I use it the same way. The "Watch" feature is nice because for some caches, I've gone multiple times and DNF'ed every time, so I choose to watch that cache to see if someone else finds it...if they or more people continue to DNF, then you know something might be up like the cache was taken/destroyed/damaged, etc. If they do find it, you know it has to be there, and you can go back and look for it again. It doesn't interfere with anything, and will not get you in trouble; it's there purely for your benefit!
  4. This thought just came to me after seeing so much about "Paperless" caching and all...How do you all physically keep track/organize your finds (if at all)? This question may be confusing to some, so I'll elaborate. For myself, I bought a huge 5 or 7-subject binder notebook to start (ones that have dividers for each subject). I use the dividers for specifying different states the caches are located in (I travel often), and in those sections for each state, I list all caches that I've downloaded to my GPSr, by name and by GC code. I then list the general Location (streets, coords, etc.), Hint if there is one for that cache, and separate lines for Found, Logged, and also a side note if the cache is best found at day or night. Looks something like this: (Cache Name)/GC code/(Day/Night) Location: Hint: Found:_________ Logged:__________ I might seem super obsessive about it to most, but helps me keep them in order and to know which I have or haven't logged online if I can't log from out on a caching run. Do any of you guys organize this way? Or are you just a "write it down on a piece of paper and go" type? Paperless 100%?
  5. WOW! Now that is extreme, and i am really amazed that a GC.com employee or Lackey would even say these words to the geocaching community. I'm sorry i even clicked on the link and peaked at this topic! I agree though, just like Admins reviewing caches. Are they really going by the guidelines, or by how they interpret the guidelines! +1, that was juuusttt a little overboard IMO. This should be an area where we can come to discuss all things geocache; our agreements, disagreements, confusion on things, and opinions and so forth. I believe posts and threads that are interpreted as threatening, degrading, or offensive toward another user, mod, employee, or the site/forums as a whole, should not be tolerated, for obvious reasons. However, posts/threads being deleted on grounds of being off-topic, mentioning competing sites, or any similar circumstance, should not warrant a deletion...Last time I checked, there are a significant number of cachers on here, and I don't believe any amount of posts or threads made mentioning "competing" sites would cause even a handful to leave and go to the other; in fact, it seems people enjoy them both equally, but favor Geocaching more still. Regarding off topic posts, when does that ever NOT happen? People are going to post other questions in threads containing different questions, and make mention of things that are off topic, that is inevitable. Bottom line, everything in moderation, INCLUDING moderation!
  6. Funny this thread has popped up, I had a whole thread deleted yesterday for mentioning a competing website, which, I understand can violate the guidelines of the forum...however, there are posts galore about this site (the *other* game, with barcodes...) on the forum, with posts being made to them talking about it as recently as 2 days ago. I know it might have violated, but good lord, I wasn't rallying a revolution to ditch this forum for the other! I wasn't even advertising it, it was in regards to me finding a game piece to this other game where a Geocache should have been, and I knew nothing about this other "competing game", so I made a thread in case anyone else had run into this particular scenario, and their thoughts on it. I asked the mod that issued the warning, about the other posts on here and did not receive an answer, so all I can come up with is this is a new guideline/rule or something. Kinda sucks as it was my first thread, and I viewed it as a good enough basis to post it as such since I couldn't find a straight answer out of the other threads made about it.
  7. From everything I've heard on this forum and elsewhere, the eTrex 20 seems to be the favored device. I have an old eTrex, the Venture HC, but it is still running strong after 3 years, is extremely easy to use, and accurate...I just got a Magellan eXplorist 110 as an upgrade, but due to frustrations I think I'm going to return it for an eTrex 20.
  8. It's not clear to me whether you have tried the MacCaching steps I outlined in my previous post . MacCaching is your only option. As many Mac users before you have discovered (including myself) it is the only software that works with a serial/USB cable on a Mac. But it works brilliantly, so there's no point wasting time looking at other options. Woahh, hold on there. Only option? I use the "Send To GPS" option just fine with my Mac with both my Garmin and Magellan, using the standard Plugin created for each device...If you download and install it correctly, you should have no issues. I've never used MacCaching or any other 3rd party program to get my caches onto my device via USB. I can explain how I do mine if you'd like, but MacCaching is not the ONLY option! haha
  9. OP, with Macs, at least from my experience, you must download and install the Plugin for your device, and once installed, close out of all windows and programs, and restart the computer. After the restart, open Geocaching.com and try the "Send to GPS" option, and it should recognize your device immediately. With many mac programs that you install, they are not completely "installed" until you restart the computer, and my mac failed to discover the device on the plugin repeatedly until I did this. Hope this helps!
  10. Glad you figured it out OP! I advise you don't use Internet Explorer for anything though, it's very unreliable and vulnerable to a bunch of bad crap. I'd use Safari or Mozilla Firefox from now on for caching and just general browsing, it's much more user friendly and less frustrating. As for any future issues with this particular problem, after downloading and installing the Plugin for your device, close out of the browser and all programs, and restart the computer. I've had to do this for every new device I've connected to download caches. Good luck and happy caching!
  11. After owning a Garmin eTrex series with a joystick, and now owning a Magellan with a joystick, I will say the joysticks on Garmin's eTrex are FAR better and easier to use, you shouldn't have an issue at all with it. It's the right amount of functionality; not too sensitive to where anything that hits it it will respond, but it also is not ridiculously stiff like the Magellan's where you're dang near breaking your finger trying to press it, and when you try to use it it just clicks down instead of moves directionally. Of course consider all other things about it, but the joystick will be the least of your worries.
  12. I don't see why there would be an issue? Only time there should be any satellite disruption or issues are physical obstacles like trees, road overpasses, buildings, etc. I could be wrong, but I've never heard of this.
  13. Oh I just assumed that's how it was. It wasn't a specific error or something like that, it was just that, I couldn't just plug in my device, download the plugin/driver and expect it to instantly recognize it and be able to download caches to it. Each one I've had to download the plugin/driver for the Garmin or for the Magellan, install the plugin/driver, then restart the Mac. Immediately after, it recognized it. I say this because many programs on Macs that you download and install require that you restart the computer for it to completely install and run, so I assumed it was like this for the plugins.
  14. I've got a Mac and a Garmin, and I used to have issues with the Plug-In or Driver finding the GPS to download things, especially caches, and I JUST got through getting my Mac to recognize my new Magellan as well. Try downloading the Plugin/Driver for the GPS for Mac, then close out of all programs, restart your computer, and try everything over again. I had to do this with each model to get the Mac to "see" the GPS was there. Hopefully this helps unless you've tried this already. All devices will have an initial frustration time of getting the Mac to recognize the GPS, I believe it's just a matter of clearing all windows/running programs, restart the Mac, and try connecting after. Worked everytime with my devices.
  15. Yeah I hear ya, I wish I could afford the nice touch-screen ones, but basically all I use my device for is caching and hiking, so I don't need anything crazy. The 110 has a few more neat options than my eTrex, but as far as ease of use and User Interface, the eTrex is the clear winner still..
  16. Oh, just grand...Yeah this is my first time dealing with a Magellan device, and I know they are made and function well, but the joystick..GAH!! Just typing the word "home" for my home waypoint was ridiculous. Might just stick to my eTrex, take this back and see about another, I'm not sure how much longer I can go on with this issue haha.
  17. Hey, anyone here pick up the new Magellan eXplorist 110? Just came out today I believe, I haven't used it for caching yet but I've been messing around with it for about an hour, and it seems like a pretty good unit. I've got one complaint though...the joystick is terrible. Instead of being able to move freely, the joystick is so stiff that when you press up/down/left/right, 95% of the time it clicks the actual joystick button, which is extremely frustrating when typing in waypoints or other text/numbers into the unit. Aside from that the color screen is great, and the menu and maps are very easy to use. I'm not too sure if I'm going to be sticking with this much longer though, the joystick seems to kill the fun out of everything else on the unit... Anyone else who's picked it up, give your thoughts or Pros/Cons. Does anyone else have this joystick issue?
