  1. I think they are asking whether it is preloaded like the POIs. In that case the answer is "no" and the rest of what you need to know is described by Pax42. The detail IN the Geocache section once you have populated them is really good. It's not yet Everything, so no attributes but that is coming sometime soon also.
  2. All of the details? I just tried it and I see the title, the cache owner, and the "description" field from the GPX but nothing else. I went to a cache page, hit the "GPX Exchange File" link and saved the file to my SD card. I put it in the unit and then went to to the Waypoints page and opened the file. Edit: I found what I needed to know here: http://forum.delorme.com/viewtopic.php?f=1...tart=15#p138691 I have read that post at least 20 times but I think all of them were before I had my PN-40. This time I understood. I now have one GPX for my daughter and one for myself. That's enough for now.
  3. I thought we could only do this with non geocache waypoints. If I load a GPX file from the waypoints menu where I have the file functions available does it load all the currently supported geocache details?
  4. Meh... last night 5 of us went out on a 15+ cache run in -25 ºC (-13 ºF) which was about -34 ºC (-29.2 ºF) with the wind chill. Needless to say we spent as little time at each cache as possible and made sure we had coffee but with the right winter wear and taking turns we managed to struggle through it. EDIT: I should say that blowing snow on a cold day like this makes it impossible but wind is definitely the bigger factor than the temperature.
  5. That's too bad. I am one of the new Canadian PN-40 owners. The only trouble with the Delorme units is getting them to Canada. Apparently they are working on that but it wasn't ready for me and obviously not for you either. I wish I would have seen this thread a few days ago but after a while we get sick of reading threads of this same title since the same arguments are bound to happen. I live fairly near to the border so I had my unit shipped to a town about 1/4 mile from the border and then picked it up from there. Only taxes were added, no duty. The Canadian regional maps that come in the box (but not on the unit) were quick and easy to install and I was up and going in just a few minutes. Also there are Topo maps for much of Canada and I have seen that there is decent PN-30/40 support at Navionics.com for lake and marine maps. I have also heard that some of the Garmin map services are offering versions of thie maps for PN-30/40 even though they don't advertise it. I can't imagine not being paperless at this point. I am very happy with my PN-40.
  6. I've never had any GPS problems like that on my 9000. I just installed openWig using your tip of the old version and I will report back on how it seems to work.
  7. I had just noticed these earlier today and posted about them over at the Delorme forum. Not sure if this video adds the graph that was requested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLRN5p5zWbQ I don't feel like I am seeing much discussion of how many times they can be recharged. Aha! Here is the site I was trying to remember: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=238985 Some info on recharge cycles and a 2nd generation in 2011: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.p...amp;postcount=9
  8. I got a kick out of the title on this thread. Just 2 days ago I was out visiting some caches in my area and I got the notice that there was a new one just minutes away. I have seen some in that area found in less than 20 minutes very recently and there is some lag on the email so I wondered. We just had a huge snowfall so most of the roads were not clear. But I made my way there and found a cleaned patch to park (aka. next to somebody's garage in the alley - hoping they won't mind the 3 minute incursion since I wouldn't) and I get the FTF. I took a few minutes to make fake tracks in the snow etc. before heading back to the car, and as I drive out of the alley another care comes driving by with the driver glancing too and fro, leaving it at the nearest legal parking spot which at this point was pretty much the middle of the road, and sprinting to the nearest trees. So when I read "rushing for an FTF" I couldn't help but envision her rushing to her STF.
  9. It really isn't as tough as it appears considering its 528 feet to every tenth of a mile. That depends on your "units" and where you live. I am blessed with being a Canadian who learned to measure during the 80s when the school system couldn't make up its mind how well to support Metric and which my parents were completely clueless about. So within a short distance from myself I think in Feet because they are smaller than Metres. I know how much 15 feet is, but my mind won't keep track of how far 5 metres is. Above that I think in the nice even Metric system where I don't have to guess how many of this are in how many of that. So I have no idea for the most part how much .3 miles is. I had the same problem when it was in Kilometres though. Mostly I just wish we could set the threshold for when it starts showing smaller units. 528 feet is still more meaningful to me than .1 miles.
  10. It was $199 the day before and the day after I bought mine. (grrr... if only I hadn't had to figure out how to get the thing into Canada) but I haven't seem that price since early December. I would buy it for $229 or as mentioned earlier get the power kit with it. If you are curious about price changes you can check here: http://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B001FVLTNA
  11. CR is definitely not the only way to get caches onto your PN-40, though it is one of the easiest so far. Personally I use GSAK but the Topo 8 software that comes with your PN-40 can also do it. In a few months you will be able to take a GPX file greated by a Pocket Query on GC.com and copy it onto an SD card and then put that into your PN-40. These are just some of the options. Personally $70 sounds like a lot to me for the Geocoin and Cache Register. For that same bundle price you can get the Power Kit and I think I even saw a bundle with the Power Kit and a Geocoin for $299. That would be more worthwhile. You definitely aren't saving anything on CR in that bundle so you might as well leave it until after you have the unit and do the 30 day trial to decide you want to pay for it. There are lots of other posts in here and at http://forum.delorme.com about the ways to get data on the PN-40.
  12. Dakboy summarized my feelings perfectly. The mass hysteria over the last 10 years isn't making anybody any safer, it is just making them more hysterical. 9/11 was a horrible evil deed but I think the net effect is that the terrorism is making life and travel more difficult for the west and I believe that is the goal. There may have been a point where security changes or other regulations made people feel safer but by now I wouldn't even be sure about that.
  13. In fairness to other methods, my "day one experience" posted a few days ago seemed pretty simple using GSAK..
  14. Sadly I was stopped by blizzard-like conditions here in Manitoba. My plan was to enjoy the first time I was moving a geocoin from one cache to another, but although I did travel to the intended location, the weather didn't let me go and visit any of the caches in that town.
  15. More support from me. I did my first 8 finds using Blackstar and tonight when a Puzzle cache mishap meant that I didn't have my solution coordinates on my new PN-40, I ended up using BlackStar to get to the cache instead. You'll miss the map views, tracks, and such but as a general compass and distance finder it works really well.
  16. I'm still trying to decide whether I want the Canadian Topos. For me at the moment they would be the only thing I would want from the Map Library subscription. I'm not sure that is worth it for me at this time. However I will likely go that route just before summer when I do some camping. As a part of my caching this afternoon I did use the routing as I drove from one cache to another and it did a very good job. That was with the Regional Street Map from DVD 4 installed. I was looking at it last night there there seemed to be lots of POI though I am not sure there were quite enough. I chose gas stations and I got a pile of 7-11 results back and there are definitely other gas stations nearby as well. Beyond those 2 things I'm not sure whether there will really be much difference in the experience. I thought the accuracy was off but it turned out that I wasn't paying enough attention to where the start of a multi was set. I had at least one occasion where I was directly at the cache. Unfortunately I was paying so much attention to making sure my new GPSR was in-pocket, I managed to not correctly place my Blackberry in its holster after checking the destination of a geocoin online. Luckily home was nearby because I didn't notice it was missing until that point. I was able to trace my way back and find it in the snow.
  17. Yay I finally got mine yesterday. What a snap to use. I love the big rubbery buttons. Within 15 minutes of getting home I had: * got my first 3-D lock... took about 2 or 3 minutes * the basemap had my street on it, although without detail * installed the Regional Street Map for Ontario and Manitoba... and took minutes because it went on the SD card * put the card back in and loaded it up, had a 3-D lock within seconds from inside the house. * refreshed the caches in GSAK from my latest PQ and synced the 500+ of them in less than 1 minute. My first activity with my PN-40 was actually to attend a christmas party where other folks with much older units were just in love with it. The first comment was "did it just get a lock that heavy inside my house?" I can't say I know every feature but as I realize I didn't try things yet I am figuring them out pretty quickly. Heading out for the first cache using this unit.
  18. Weather has definitely been the issue here, as with so much of North America this last 2 weeks. With temperatures pretty steady between -25 and -30 C plus wind it just hasn't been a situation to spend time outside. That said there was a one-day reprieve 2 Sunday's ago where I got my first FTF using my BlackBerry. My PN-40 remains in a post-box at the border until sometime this week. Hopefully soon but I have no control over when my "courier" goes to get it. Keeping my busy this past week while I am inside, has been GC21RDH. This Puzzle Cache has numbers hidden in a series of images in order to determine the coordinates. Some of them were easy, some were really tiny, and unfortunately at least 3 digits I have not yet found. At least it's a way to continue the game while stuck inside. There are 10 of us or so trying to figure this one out and so far nobody has found it after about a week. I'm learning about where to buy cache containers and camo tape and witnessing how like every other community the same types of characters seem to want to cause grief, and some newbie will ask the same question every day. The only good thing about that is that if you don't mind lurking like myself, then you get to have all your questions answered without having to ask them Thursday is supposed to be warm and I bought a new flashlight to go in search of a night only cache following some Firetacks... so hopefully my kid and I can visit that one.
  19. I've been wondering about where to get Camo colored tape to cover the non-camo containers. It may be different up here in Canada but in general are you finding it at Wal-Mart or Target, or do hunting /fishing stores like Cabelas carry it?
  20. If you get Dollarama lock n lock knock-offs, be prepared to replace them a couple of times a year - the tabs will break off quickly. Real lock n locks should last 3-5 years (maybe longer), so they turn out to be cost effective and will protect the contents of the cache better. True... I was just thinking about places I had seen them locally.... good advice.
  21. Welcome magpieboy! I too am a new Winnipeg geocacher.... There are some containers available from our local geocaching society. http://www.mbgeocaching.ca/mbga_gear Any of the caches I have planned are for a private event and so far I am focusing on pill bottles and some juice bottles with wide mouths. I think Dollarama has some lock and lock style containers.
  22. Congrats. My order from Crutchfield just arrived at the border yesterday, so I won't be cancelling anything. It's still $170 less than anywhere I can order from here in Canada so I'm happy with $229. With a personal delay to picking it up we will probably get them about the same time. Exciting!
  23. I don’t care what anyone says; sarcasm is always fun. You are correct in observing that I may have misunderstood. Of course, you may have as well. If I misconstrued Flask’s meaning, she is welcome to correct me and explain what she really meant. Fighting with myself on posting, but I have to agree with KBI here. I don't see how you could read anything else into a comment about comparing an FTF with bragging about sexual conquests - which pretty much anybody considers as WRONG. If I too have misunderstood, then... what KBI said...
  24. Congrats. It really is exciting, especially the first one. I did the same on Sunday. The cache was published at exactly midnight on Saturday, and I am a church-goer so I could not go then, or first thing in the morning on Sunday. I consulted with some fellow geocachers after the service and they thought for sure somebody would beat me to it, but I decided to try. As I drove up to the best spot to begin my trek through 600m of snow and grass covered deadfall and 1 foot deep ruts - there were a great deal of footsteps in the snow, so I was convinced I had missed it. I was really happy and surprised to open the cache and find the certificate.
  25. it didn't. getting the firstfind is fun. having it advertised is crass. having sex is (i hear) fun. advertising your conquests is crass. i never cease to be amazed at people who write "yay! firstfind!" all over the first page of a logbook, as if having their signature there at the top of the page isn't enough. I see, so we can have fun as long as we keep it all good and proper and contain ourselves. fun That said, my own joy doesn't require the owner to reciprocate by re-posting it. Regardless, nobody is going to think less of a cache because somebody FTFed it.
