  1. I have sunrise and sunset times displayed on my trip computer page for my Endura Out&Back (the one with the black background and the 4 sections for stats). It doesn't come preloaded that way though. You have to click on each section and change it to the sunrise time for one and the sunset time for the other. I usually add the clock to another section so I know what time it currently is versus what time is legal. It would be nice to have the area calculation for hunting as it would allow me to double check the number of available hunting acres in a hunting lease. I guess if a food plot area was big enough, it would help measure square feet so I could know how much seed to buy too.
  2. Hey! Thanks for the tip. Just checked CascadeGPS against BassPro (where I bought mine). CascadeGPS was $50 cheaper than BassPro on the Safari. That would get my friend about 70% of the way towards one of the AccuTerra cards too. CascadeGPS has the mapping cards on sale for $69.49. From what I can tell, BassPro is similar to REI in that you go with them if you expect good customer service or return policy. I don't think REI is carrying the Endura GPS products yet but figure they will now that the products seem to be pretty solid. I don't think they carry items unless they are sure that they won't have problems with it. At least, that's their reputation.
  3. Just curious who the best and most affordable geocoin manufacturers are? Wanting trackables only but what I am finding seems to be pretty expensive for the low numbers I am wanting to have made (around 50). Anyone with experience on this?
  4. I have done two things to help if I lose my GPS. 1) I used my label printer to print "Return to (cell phone number)" and put that on the inside of my battery cover. 2) Created a waypoint for Home with cell phone number in the name and my first name in the description. The coordinates are actually for the place I would prefer to meet someone to get the GPS back (local restaurant where I know the owners). My Out&Back has a lanyard loop on the corner. I put a caribeener clip on it and clip it to my belt loop when I need my hands free. I tried a lanyard loop around my neck for a while but either I didn't have the right lanyard cord or the GPS was a little too heavy to do that. Either way, it bothered my neck a bit so I moved to the belt loop.
  5. I like this. I felt like this the other day until I realized someone had hidden a cache underneath a major set of electric lines. That's just cruel. I also thought about "Geocaching .... because my application for secret agent was turned down!" I also thought about this: On the back: Not attempting a drug transaction! Not seeking illicit adult encounters! Not planting a bomb! Just searching for hidden ammo cans in the woods! On the front: Go geocaching - make others wonder what you are up to!
  6. Is Ebay any good for stuff like this? I see a number of Out&Back and Safari's listed but most are "Buy It Now" at the same price as normal retail. I did see one specific Out&Back Geocaching "kit" NIB on Ebay auction when I looked a minute ago for $159. Too bad my friend wants the Safari instead. There isn't a similar deal for the Safari. I had never heard of CascadeGPS before so that is a GREAT lead and had forgotten to check Amazon.
  7. Thanks for moving this over to the correct forum category.
  8. OK. A friend of mine from church is interested in getting a GPS for hunting and geocaching. He has seen my Out&Back and really likes it, has researched these online, and now is leaning towards the Safari because of the 3D compass and it will work with his game camera (we think). The big question is where do you find the best deals on a GPS? I bought mine from a store but told him that if he is already convinced which one he wants, it would be better to buy online. The forum seemed to be a great way to find the best places to buy online and still end up buying it from someplace that is reliable and will still be in business next week. Let me know your thoughts. He is looking at doing this in the next couple of weeks when he gets his tax return back.
  9. I agree that fixing the duplicate cache issue for pocket queries would be at the top of my list of improvements or bug fixes. We don't have a ton of caches where I am and its pretty obvious when there are duplicates. By the way, I tested the manually entered coordinates just to see what it did. Someone may have mentioned this already, but I guess there is a proximity indicator that is set too loose. It looks like if you import the cache locations as a LOC or GPX file, you avoid this problem entirely. Or at least until Lowrance can fix in a software update.
  10. I have an Out&Back and can confirm that it's pretty easy to move cache information from the computer or web to the GPS. It's much, much better if you do this with pocket queries which requires premium membership. The Out&Back (and all other Endura models) also does a good job of letting you record Field Notes and upload those to Geocaching.com to record your finds. I am not familiar with the DeLorme models so can't comment on how they handle. I just know I don't really like the small screen on the PN models.
  11. That's sad. You need the DeLorme and the Lowrance units over there. Wonder why they aren't available?
  12. FYI, the Safari is probably like my Out&Back. It can handle LOC files as well as GPX. You can choose to download LOC without upgrading to premium membership. I do agree the pocket query option is a lot better though.
  13. chachi, what else is filling up memory on your Out&Back? Mine has 192MB of onboard memory on the GPS instead of 32 like you mentioned. I don't even use a microSD card most of the time but then I don't keep but one pocket query on it at a time. Curious if you have any trails or pictures stored on your GPS too. That would use up memory too.
  14. Congrats on the purchase! I am a bit envious as I paid the full $199 plus tax from Bass Pro. I didn't think to try eBay. If you need any help learning how to use it, just post a message to the boards. The best one to provide help is of course Endura Expert. He works for Lowrance and helps a lot of folks on the Geocaching Forum. Others that seem to be really great help are Native and StarBrand. They both know a lot more than I do on these things. I actually learn more from the forums than I do talking to guys in the retail stores that have actually been trained on the products. Keep us updated on how this goes.
  15. LumpyGravy, Curious what product you ended up with. Any updates?
  16. Just saw the thread on night geocaching and thought of this. Maybe we need a wearable GPS with red LED for night vision caching. The tubes may be a bit extreme!
  17. Just found this on YouTube (what else am I supposed to do on a Sunday afternoon with bad weather other than scan YouTube and the Geocaching forums). Whether you are a Lowrance fan or not, you gotta give them credit for actually including geocaching as part of their outdoor GPS video. Seems a little staged but not 100% surprising since it is a company video. Looks like this video is only a month old.
  18. If you do see a bigfoot or a UFO, the Endura GPS's have a waypoint icon for both (oddly enough). Obviously someone over at Lowrance has a strange sense of humor ... or they are targeting a customer base that no one else has bothered to target - those people ending up on MonsterQuest TV. Waiting for the day I will actually need that Bigfoot icon!
  19. I looked at the Garmin 400t when I was shopping for a GPS. The reviews on it were pretty good but I couldn't handle the price tag. Also, couldn't figure out how I was going to use it in the winter since it was all touch screen and I would have to take my gloves off to use it. The eTrex units were well recommended but they don't support paperless geocaching at all and weren't touchscreen and buttons like the Out&Back. The Out&Back seemed like a good choice and seems to work well. But now that I would like better country roads, the turn-by-turn road navigation card seems very appealing but it won't work on my GPS - only on the Safari and Sierra models. I guess I should have spent more for the Safari as that would have given me a 3-D compass too.
  20. That's a good point. You almost have to dress like you are going out to dig for truffles or something. I remember I tried to cache on my way home from a function where I had to wear slacks and dress shoes once. Couldn't find the cache but wouldn't give up and went traipsing through some pretty dense brush keeping more of an eye out for poison ivy than for the cache. Finally gave up and came back later with better clothes for the situation. I guess if I had been a Star Trek fan, that would have made my green makeup run!
  21. Wow! Apparently I am behind the game or too new to know what I am doing. I don't carry hardly any of this stuff. Where I cache, I am not hiking most of the time so I don't venture that far from the truck or a major road. I usually just carry my Out&Back GPS, an LED flashlight, and a pair of work gloves. One of the things I thought was cool about geocaching was that I really didn't need much to participate. Unlike the shooting sports I like, you don't have to spend a fortune on equipment to get started. I never even thought about bringing a backpack along unless I am camping or hiking. I will say the afterbite idea was a good one as we have yellow jackets and red wasps that both seem to like cache areas in the warmer months.
  22. Curious how many people think extra mapping is needed or is a big enough benefit for geocaching to justify the cost. I have a Lowrance Out&Back which is a great GPS for the money but doesn't include every road that I come across or show detailed topo lines to help gauge terrain difficulty. The GPS is working fine but just like all of my other tools and gadgets, I am looking at what it would take to make them even better. Please provide advise/opinions. Thanks.
  23. I have to agree with StarBrand on the Endura Out&Back. Paperless geocaching is definitely the up and coming trend. Why waste money on something that doesn't support it like the eTrex models. You might as well drop the extra $40 and get the Out&Back and have the benefit of touchscreen too. At least that is what I thought when I bought it as my first GPS. I was looking for something that was easy to learn and could handle geocaching, hunting and hiking for several years. I may use it this summer for some kayak fishing too (so I don't miss my take out point). For the money, I really couldn't find anything that could beat it.
  24. This thread is pretty funny! That is funny. Was that image actually out on the web somewhere or did you create it just for the thread? By the way, saw a rerun of Galaxy Quest this past week. I had forgotten how great a spoof it was of Star Trek. There was a part where the Doctor Lazarus guy was using the tricorder or something like that and had it turned around backwords. Reminded me of the first time I picked up a Garmin 76 GPS and held it backwords. Pretty funny!
  25. It's been a while since I updated mine but it seems like I remember they were both called Installer.exe so you couldn't have both on a card at the same time. The 1.1 update took about 30 minutes or so to run and the 1.2 update was only about 5 minutes or so. At least, that is how long it took on my Out&Back. It may be longer with the fancier Endura models. Well worth the time for sure as these GPS's rock with the 1.2 update.
