  1. Hello Italian Geocaching Friends! We will be on a cruise ship, stopping in Napels, Civitavecchia, and Livorno with just a few precious hours in each port. I hope we can find a geocache in each stop in Italy and need a lot of help. Will our iPhone Geocaching app work in Italy? For each port, if we can find ONE geocache, what do you recommmend?? Thanks in advance for your help Winstonsmom Texas
  2. Hi Jason! We have met so many awesome friends and geocachers by attending local events. It's a great way to meet the local geocachers and eventually find a geocaching pal.
  3. Since the newest update for the iPhone app, I get bumped off when I click on "navigate to cache." It briefly shows a map with me in South America and the cache here in Texas, then kicks me completely out of geocaching.com. Does anyone know what's going on or is this just a problem for me?
  4. I had problems today with 4.2 iPhone app for Geocaching. When I go to "Find a Nearby Geocache," tap on the cache, and then navigate to cache, it goes to a map where I am 1,600 miles away (somewhere in South Africa) and then drops off, back to the iPhone main page. Is this a bug with the 4.2?
  5. Hello all from a Forum Newbie This is my first time to post a question to the knowledge-bank here in the forums. I am asking for help in planning an event with our local law enforcement and fire fighters following a "typical" bomb scare involving a light post cache. I have heard MANY stories similar to ours of the local bomb squad called to find an LPC, but this is the first time it happened "in my backyard." That hurts! The local media's report was NOT favorable to geocachers, which poked us all in a very personal way. http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local-beat/High...-109005394.html My question is: How do we engage the local public safety community to talk with geocachers? I want to host an event where geocachers hear from LEO folks about their call for public safety and where LEO hear about the positive and vibrant geocaching experience of the folks they are protecting. If anyone has hosted an event with a similar theme, I would appreciate any ideas, wisdom, concerns to help us organize our response to our sad LPC bomb. P.S. One of our geocaching friends is a fire figther and he is working to find contacts with the LEo trainers, so we have an "in" to make this happen. I am looking for wisdom about how to organize the event to achieve postive outcomes for LEO and geocachers.
  6. Not me. That is what the ignore list is for. +1 +2
  7. 1. How many EarthCaches have you developed? One published and another "in the works." What type? Fossil 2. Do you feel the guidelines for submission are clearly stated? Yes, they are very clear and easy to follow. Are you aware of the recent changes? Yes 3. What is your primary reason for developing an EC? There are only a few in the DFW area. 4. Roughly how much time did you put into research? 8 - 10 hours 5. Did you research online or in a library? Consult an expert? I was fortunate to discover a local association that answered my specific question promptly. They have an awesome website that gave me all of the information I needed and inspired me to think about other opportunities for ECs in our area. 6. How much time did it take to write the page? 2 hours 7. Have you had to jump through hoops* to get permission? Getting approval for my published EC was very easy. The EC that is "in the works" is delayed because I haven't gotten approval. I need to follow up with the city official. 8. Did you submit at EarthCache .org or on geocaching.com? I submitted it after they were combined. 9. Did you find the submission process or forms to be difficult to use? No, it was very easy and fast. 10. Have you had a submission returned, requesting more information? No 11. Did you feel help was available from the EC (forum or local) community if needed? Although I didn't have to ask for help, I certianly knew who to ask. 12. How would you rate the overall difficulty you had in developing your EarthCache(s)? Please explain your reasons. The difficulty depends on the location of the EC. Some public agencies are more friendly than others.
  8. Just a quick Google search found 1,050 laser-printed on vinyl poker chip labels for $80. (http://www.nolimitpokerstore.com/productdetails.asp?prod_id=11420&src=GoogleBase) Looks like custom clay poker chips run around .75 cents each. (http://www.buypokerchips.com/custom-poker-chips-s/37.htm). I see custom plastic poker chips at .18 cents each. (http://www.inkhead.com/party-supplies/personalized-poker-chips+tokens-_ca-380-1.html). I do not yet know how small a QR Code image can be and still be readable but I think they would do fine at this size. Love this idea! TY TAR!
  9. That is so cool! How did you make it? I used pixlr.com. It is prety much like photoshop. I importe both pics (my cammo GC.com like logo, and the QR code) into different layers of my picture. Then I played around with the different layer tools (opacity, add, overlay etc.) I think the second one I posed worked out even better. Edit: I edited your quote to put my better QR code into it. Thank you! You have been a source of inspiration!!
  10. This has been a facinating learning process! I found this website to creat CR http://qrcode.kaywa.com/. Thanks for the inspiration!
  11. Does anyone know if a coin or pathtag has been made for International EarthCache Day 2010?
  12. Here is the website for the Arizona Geocachers - http://www.azgeocaching.com/
  13. If it were me, I'd check with the local geocachers at an event or their website. Most areas have a good core of geocachers who love to help one another out. Another idea is to find a geocacher who has placed a lot of geocaches (check their profile page), send them an email, and ask if they know why there aren't any geocaches in the wilderness area you are interested in. I bet one whole dollar that you'll find out within minutes if the area has a rule about placing geocaches or not. Good luck with your first cache! It's a ton of fun!
  14. Can the end stage of a Wherigo be like a virtual without a physical cache to confirm that the geocacher found it?
  15. Check out the Texas Geocaching website http://www.texasgeocaching.com/ and keep an eye out for local events. The Houston area geocachers are a great group http://hgcs.org/. We stumbled upon our local group (South West Arlington Area Geocachers SWAG) that meets every week and have made a ton of wonderful new friends. I am a lurker too which means I have learned a lot from the good (and bad) who post to the forums. The most important thing I've learned from the forums is about how to write a good log entry and the problem of lazy TYFC TNLNSL etc... Haven't used them since then! I was challenged to write a thoughtful log and have enjoyed the record (kind of like an online journal) of my geocaching journey.
  16. Thanks for sharing this log entry and photo!! This balances the universe for me after reading the "no digging no pointy things" thread.
  17. Part of the fun of geocaching for me is the process of sitting down to write and log my finds as soon as I can. I always carry a clipboard or a small notebook and record the name of the cache and some brief notes to trigger my memory of the experience. I try to take a picture as well, especially if the cache had something interesting or eye-catching. With my notes and photographs, I am ready to reflect on the details of caching for my many audiences: CO, future cachers, and myself. My logs have become another source of journaling about life that is an unexpected gift from geocaching. Bret Hammond writes about this in his article from Geocacher University about the Creative Writing experience in posting logs. http://geocacher-u.com/content/view/14/33/
  18. Thanks so much for everyone who shared ideas/sources. This is VERY helpful for a newbie/wannabie ECr.
  19. I am late to this but if needed, I would love to adopt caches placed by TerryDad2. You are my inspiration and hope to place an EC soon.
  20. I am a Mac user as well and can send individual caches to my GPS. Are you trying to download a pocket querry? If so, then it doesn't work with Mac (drats!!).
  21. I will be visiting my son in Italy and have one day to see Venice. I have loaded up the caches in the area but would love to get any advice/suggestions about what to see and do while caching in this ancient place. TY!
