  5. I came back from visiting the local college today to find a black envelope in my mailbox. I was puzzled as I was not expecting anything of note to arrive this week. Upon further inspection I noticed that the return address was from the world renowned Miskatonic University. A deep foreboding came over me just looking at the missive as there have been many unexplained stories associated with the University. Stories chronicling events that science cannot explain. Carefully opening the envelope showed some strange tokens inside with a brief note from a mysterious "J~." The note explains that it was too late for "J~" but that the tokens may be the anchor to which to stop the mind from slipping slowly into madness in the days to come. While I don't recognize the symbols on one side of the token, its power is evident in the soft glow it produces in the dark. The other side has a picture that to look upon is to court insanity as it is one of the things "Man Was Not Meant to Know" and I can only whisper the word "Chthulu". Beware the coming days!! I wish to thank the mystery giver as I am sure the warding stone will help preserve my sanity in the days to come.
  6. Congrats to all the "stressed" recipients! That is one sweet mystery coin. Thank you mystery coiner for keeping the mystery tradition alive.
  7. As a geocoin collector, I'm not sure how to take this statement. Its almost like you are saying there is a parallel between collecting and stealing. All my coins are legitimately purchased from geocoin vendors and other collectors. One of the things that I do when I purchase/trade for a coin from another collector is to check the status of the coin(Activated/unactivated) when I receive the coin. If the coin is activated, I then check the ownership of the geocoin. Is the owner the person that I purchased from/traded with? If not, then I check with the owner of record through geocaching.com and see if the coin was sold legimately (and ask for it to be adopted over to my account)or ask what they would like to do if the coin was "stolen" from cache/owner. Out of the hundreds of coins purchased and traded for, I have only had one case of a lost/stolen geocoin come into my possession. I contacted the seller who was unaware of the activated status of the coin as he was selling off a collection he purchased from someone getting out of the game and was told that all the coins were unactivated. The actual coin was a traveller that got mistakenly mixed in with the collection when the cacher decided he didn't want to play anymore. The seller checked through the rest of the geocoin collection he was selling to see if there were any others but that was the only instance of other people's coins mixed in. I then contacted the Owner of record of the geocoin to see what they wanted me to do with the coin and they were just happy that it was found. It was out of circulation for about 2 years and I was able to put it back into a cache for it to continue travelling. Different people have different views on whether to release a geocoin into a cache or not. I have quite a large collection of coins and also several travelers that I enjoy seeing rack up the mileage and stories. Is it foolish to release a geocoin? I don't think so. They may disappear for a while but then again they may appear a few years later like the example above and continue their journey. I try to promote geocoins and geocoin collecting by having released coins out in caches for others to discover/move. I also tend to put unactivated coins into my caches as first to find prizes to promote geocoins that way as well. I personally think that most coins are not "stolen" in order to sell off on some "black market". There are too many knowledgeable collectors out there willing to report "hinky" behavior on most major markets that sell things(ebay, forums, etc.) for it to be a widespread practice to steal for resell. I think that most of the "lost/stolen" geocoins are the result of noobs, people not aware of geocoin etiquette, or people just who have quit playing the game.
  8. Congrats! I was lucky enough to receive the Antique Copper version this past week but that pales in comparison to your full mailbox.
  9. This one is referred to as the "ENIGMA" geocoin(all captial letters) by Geocaching.com and has the icon. This version is referred to as the "Enigma" geocoin(Just the first letter capitalized) by geocaching.com and has the icon.
  10. I'll try to get the same issue again now... As you probably read in the other thread I'm aware of the approval process and why (probably) you want to have it. The main problem for me was: I issued information, but I don't have any way to know, what information came through in the end. I just sent a message to scificollector using your contact form and I got the "sent"-message together with my text that I sent. This way I know what he got. But when I (finally) recieved a "submitted"-message after entering the new coin it was on top of the main gallery page. It would be helpful to see the submitted data then. Now: If my data is incomplete, it can't be approved. But I can't add more info to the same edition, (can I?). I haven't tried yet whether it is possible to add another edition with the same name, providing more complete information. I guess not, because the unapproved edition is still in the system and the name column probably has a unique-flag... but that's just a guess. I did indeed show that the edition was awaiting approval. I added some missing information and approved the edition of the coin to show up on the website. There is a slight lag in the approval process especially if the admins are currently sleeping when the coin edition is input. As I said before I try to look at the moderated objects (Editions needing approval) at least twice a day.
  11. Quoted this from the more general thread, because the following is too tech-y and mainly related to the project here. I just signed up to geocoin trader and tried to enter a rare coin (that I neither own nor keep) that is listed at Groundspeak with a generic icon and one of the many "Personal Geocoin" titles. I provided the Groundspeak-id that belongs to it, but the geocointrader-system didn't accept the number. So I unchecked the "trackable"-box, left a note in the comment field and clicked "next" again. I got no error message, but the same screen - over and over (maybe because it didn't update my other inputs?). Then I did something else, and went back to that page after a while (now empty again - it didn't store the information). I typed into the comment-field, that I don't know, whether my input was delivered, and clicked "Next" again. What I didn't expect: this time I got a status report, that it made its way to approval. I don't know what information arrived there and cannot check nor update... Now I'm curious... I know your site is on a good way, but there are issues, that have to be fixed, before I am able to enter data. Ok, it was not a mainstream entry... but the system should be able to handle this somehow, or people might lose interest (see quote). I hope you understand this as constructive help (what I intended it to be). I am one of the Admins responsible for the approval of coins. I check the website for new input twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening). There are a few awaiting approval but that is because there is no icon listed nor photo and it is hard to make sure that the coin edition is correct. Anything that you think would help with identifying the specific coin during the approval process you can put in the comments section and we will read it. I usually will try to look for a photo via google images/Groundspeak trackables/original website where sold in order to attach a photo to the entry if it doesn't have one already. Feel free to email me as well if you have any questions. Thanks.
  12. Very cool!!! I want one There's one for sale now! i think i've had one on my trading list for about 2 years...anyone still looking? Email Sent.
  13. I am now on the admins for the site and can approve submissions. I generally am on the site at least once in the morning and for a couple hours in the evening so approvals should have quick turnaround as long as the required information is correct. Please contribute if you can so we can get this site jump started again. Thanks.
  14. Sure, but I woud like that the system itself suggested trades. Not many users now, but if we get this thing flying... I would also volunteer, as long as somebody else reviewed my submissions. =) /Fredrik I have actually been spending a lot of time recently working on the features that you are talking about. They are pretty complex due to the algorithmic aspect, but I hope to soon release them so that trades will be "auto"-arranged. I would definitely really appreciate it if people could volunteer to help approve coins. Please email me through my profile if you are interested, and I will give you admin privileges and explain how the approval system works. Thank you! Email sent.
  15. If you go to a coins specific page and click on the "Seeking" tab. It will show you all the people who are looking for that particular coin. From there you can click on the name of the person to see what they have for traders. You can contact other users from the main page under the users tab. I think this website would be a boon to a lot of collectors out there but currently it is very slow to update. If the designer needs some admins to help him approve editions to get this project rolling, I would happily volunteer. The biggest current detriment to the project is the length of time it takes to get an edition approved (imho).
  16. Restored to last correct version. Someone did a partial sort AGAIN! Please do not sort the document people unless you are absolutely sure how to get all of it done. Thanks NOSNOW for pointing the mix-up so it could be fixed. Anyone who needs help with it please contact me at scificollector@gmail.com
  17. Yep. I've done that twice now. Once with a commercial design(Schrodinger's Cat Geocoin)sold at the store and once with a coin for the Geocoin Club (October 2012 -Elephant geocoin). Both times the mint was great to work with and I learned quite a bit about designing in the process. I have some other designs that I may go that route again until I can build up some capital to start minting my own.
  18. Can't wait to get one of the glow versions.
