  1. are the prices that i'm seeing american or canadian? When I viewed the page prices were US.
  2. Not sure its the cheapest, but here's what Amazon has to offer... One of my favorites is this one.
  3. It's happened to us a few times, on each occasion I was able to work the name of the cache into my greeting, the first one was around a library and was named after a book, I just kind of looked up and said I'd lost my copy of X, he told me he was looking too, we searched together, still wound up with a DNF and that cache is still on my to do list. As with any encounter with possible muggles, look like you belong and make pleasant conversation and you may learn that they are into caching or are about to start getting that way...
  4. Another possiblility is that for some reason your reviewer is using IE6?
  5. This Universe you live in, here's why: By bringing up the name of the application, you are potentially generating interest in it, since it is an unauthorized application (I used it too w/o knowing it wasn't playing by the rules) GS doesn't want ANY interest being generated and I can understand the logic. That being said, the programmer of said program apparently knew that this day would come as the application has the ability to import GPX files as well as other non-scraping attributes, so it could play by the rules like BasicGPS does, however the full functionality has not built into the any version. I suspect that in the coming weeks a newer TOU friendly version of said program will be available and we can all go back to being happy. BTW I have a HTC Titan (Mogul for Sprint) running WinMo 6.1 and the live.geocaching.com site takes 3 tries to get text that is in English, the Downloadable file will not open directly on the unit as it is not a cab file (I'm not a fan of ANY app that requires my PC to install), thus I have not yet tried it, and the site does seem to be for Eurocaching as in the flags there is no Stars & Stripes, just a Union Jack... Anyway there's my 2 cents. Edited to say that mtn-man beat me to it...
  6. I am not sure exactly how to interpret the table, but I think you should read as e.g. support for "Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3" ends 24 months after the next service pack releases (not likely to happen) or at the end of the product's support lifecycle, whichever comes first. If I am not mistaken, extended support for Windows XP will end in 2014. So there is probably more than 4 years of support left for IE6. I stand corrected.
  7. Regarding GS Support for IE6, check out this page on Microsoft's site about their support cycle for IE6...
  8. Did a little research on Microsoft's Website, if you reference this page you will see a date for end of Microsoft support for IE6 listed as 13-Jul-2010, with other cases referencing the service pack support cycle. Looks like IE6 may be phased out by Microsoft soon which is unfortunate for some who have the Legacy Apps. However, it is possible to run more than one browser; for instance on my personal computer I have IE8, Chrome, & Firefox all installed. I use Firefox, my wife prefers Chrome, and IE is just there. At work I am stuck with IE6 (which I use for GC on breaks & lunch) and am currently unable to access GC.com aside from the home page (even when using the Alternative Refresh option previously noted), there has been talk of upgrading to IE7 here, but no actual move towards it yet. But with the above data from Microsoft looks like they may have to upgrade out of necessity! Still awaiting a definative answer from Groundspeak re: IE6 support status though...
  9. The same scenario applies here as well. If it is more that a drive to, jump out, sign the log, then they won't go for it. I have this Cache that has not been visited in a year. And its right next to a very large metropolitan area. So this cache will probably be archived and pulled when it starts to get hot down here. And my caches in CO only get a few visits per year, but that area is entirely different than AZ. Not to worry! DOC is on my to do list, need a good long trek to try out the "cache stroller" for our microcacher. Beside I like the theme, and just browsing the web a bit I learned quite a bit about the actual person this is named for! Looking forward to a and paying tribute to one of our fallen.
  10. With the talk of making sure that GC.com works on Mobile applications, how about designing a more functional WAP interface? Trust me if I knew how, I would... The recent update to the site hosed my favorite mobile app (A thread was created and closed within 24 hours regarding it). So I am now back to using the WAP Site for posting logs on the go and would like to see a more updated version. I'm not trying to hijack the thread, just expanding on the idea a bit.
  11. If you are paperless caching with a PPC (I know it's not an iPhone), but there is a program called GPS4PPC available at FreewarePocketPC.net that does conversions.
  12. Is there another term for deliberately trying to inconvenience other people for laughs? Yes... Donkey i 5+4...
  13. So, this topic popped up in a local forum and sparked my interest to do a bit of research. As a result I gathered the following information regarding South Mountain Park. As far as the City of Phoenix stance on Geocaching, I was only able to locate 1 page on the City website citing Geocaching as a problem. It reads as follows: As far as if the City has an issue with Geocaching... I think not, as I was able to locate the following on the activities calendar: I have also seen instances of Geocaching classes held at City of Phoenix Libraries (Although none are currently scheduled). These Activities tell me that someone in the City Office knows of the website and how to use it, thus keeping caches out of the protected areas of South Mountain Park. That being said, with 132 Geocaches available in the "World's Largest Municiple Park" I personally don't think that is a bad thing, and plan to snag as many as I can in the area. I also ponder why the city would want to remove them and lose the GeoTourists that come to visit this "City of Phoenix Point of Pride" and since we (as Geocachers) Practice CITO and help them maintain the park? Hopefully my research provided you with the answers you sought to obtain via telephone and provided those who are not from the area with a desire to snag some 's of their own on their next trip through town and enjoy this landmark for its beauty and caches. Roughly the park is centered at N 33° 20.434 W 112° 04.168 And here is a Bookmark list of all caches within the park boundaries as of today.
  14. 46 responses on how to get something out of a block of ice and finally someone suggests an ice pick. To the OP...good luck on getting this one. Be sure to let us know what cache this is after you've found it. I'm close enough that I could go after it myself and I enjoy a good puzzle cache. Considering the number of good puzzle caches in your area I'm surprised that the FTF has lasted this long. Is it possible that the final part of the puzzle is freeing the cache?
  15. I might try the puzzle angle He might be into that His hobbies all revolve around being indoors - reading and indoor gaming - computer, console, board, dice, etc. I share the same interests so it's not like we don't do anything fun together. But I'd love for him to share my favorite new hobby with me It does work out in the sense that he doesn't mind staying home with anywhere from 1 to 4 children so I can run out and geocache Since he is into reading, gaming, etc, see if getting his input for building a Puzzle Cache might spark some interest, for instance there is a cache in our area that (by the description) is based on an old console game. I'm sure that his reading & gaming has given him TONS of insight for making that special clue or theme that might just bump that puzzle up to a Difficulty 5!
  16. Thus the reason for the MRE Heater suggestion... they are made to be eco-friendly, and won't hurt the tree stump like flame would, hollow tree stump to me screams flammable...
  17. I'm surprised that with all of the talk about "Ammo-Cans & War time" that no one has suggested an MRE Heater... Here's a description of what it does: "NSN 8970-01-321-9153 Raises temperature of 8 oz food pouch at least 100° degrees Fahrenheit Uses no flame or electricity Activates with 2 oz. plain water Environmentally friendly iron, magnesium, & sodium composition Easy to use Flameless Ration Heater (FRH) is the water-activated, environmentally friendly heater especially designed for the US Army to heat a soldier's individual eight ounce Meals, Ready to Eat (MRE) field ration." Since each heater is the size of a playing card it's easy to stash them in your "cachepack". They should be readily available at most Army Surplus Stores, if that's not an option, Google MRE Heater, you can buy them on Amazon! Anyways, if 100° won't get it to budge... Spring will.
  18. Well everyone seems to be weighing in on how to regulate, but I haven't found any promotional ideas in the postings. I came across this on GC.com the other day and a new cacher in the area that I am in contact with due to work was very excited. Here's a link to an article regarding the opening of Texas State Parks to geocaching and how they are promoting it. Hope this helps.
  19. If you are going to put it like that... I wanna see the lamp skirt this one goes under! Would be kinda funny to build a large scale version of a PLC...
  20. No he didnt. The man who killed Santa Claus Actually this holiday season a new suspect is being considered for the death of Santa Claus...
  21. Wouldn't most stroller equipped families like to be able to load their GPS and find caches that are in nice places, rather than in homeless encampments, litter strewn lots, dumpster areas behind strip malls, on guardrails on busy thoroughfares, etc. without spending hours of research before their day of caching? I once pushed a stroller and my 6 month old across this field listed as 1 terrain - it was easy enough - no dodging cars or traffic. I'm not saying that parking lits are the only stroller accessible caches, personally I went a bit overboard in building "the ultimate cache stroller" starting with a jogging stroller (larger wheels for rough terrain), then adding a set of bicycle headlights & taillights (safety & visibility for night caching) and finally a bicycle mount for the GPSr on the handle. A bit overboard yes, but our microcacher can now weather 3+ terrain with ease. But on the more common side of things, an umbrella stroller is a much more limited for terrain. Also, I wasn't referring to homeless encampments or dumpster areas, I was merely shedding some light on parking lot caches, and I personally think that because most of our parking lots are mistaken for Talledega that the difficulty with a stroller should be increased to at least 2...
  22. One thing I have seen overlooked in this whole debacle is that caching is supposed to be family friendly. What some may consider trivial and pointless may be what the stroller equipped family is looking for. Also (and I'm fairly certain that Tsegi Mike and Desert Viking will back me on this one) when it's 115 degrees outside and you want to snag a find to fulfil a need to log a find, you may not want to embark on that 15 mile one way hike as you will likely die of dehydration (which results in a DNF). I am an objective person that realizes that each individual will favor one thing over another (I like Chevy's not Fords), but that is why we are given so many options. Most of our finds are urbans, some micros, and even a few PLM's, all of them did the same thing for us, they enabled us to find a geocache, most times while we were out doing something else... like shopping. As a matter of fact here in Phoenix a "skirt lifter" has been taken to a new level and turned puzzle cache (GC14X50). Everyone who has posted has made a valid point towards their personal feelings and beliefs, and I honestly think that the sheer amount of feedback has more than answered the initial question. Anyway, there's my . Now can we stop ?
  23. Looking through here I am surprised not to see any Gerber Multi-Tools listed, I have had huge success with them in the past. Likely the most formidable combination I have carried was the Gerber Pro Scout coupled together with Swiss Army Tinker. Unfortunately both were stolen from me some years back before I started caching, been looking into replacing them.
  24. The wife got me a nice belt case for the GPSr and a "bicycle" mount to be used on the microcachers jogging (Geocaching) stroller... So now with headlights, tail lights, & GPS, all he needs now is a motor! BTW the lighting is for summer night caching in AZ when it's only 95 degrees!
  25. Regarding this, I will agree with all previous posts, don't poke holes in the tree... However, I have found a Nano in a tree that was VERY well hidden, the owner had found a stripped piece of bark, glued a nano (referred to in description as a bison tube) to the bark, and then wedged the nano into a fork of the tree so the bark was in essence reapplied to the tree. Very clever and a great hide to boot!
