  1. Nice news. Thanks for tracking down that piece of information.
  2. Montana software version update 2.40 I haven't received my 650 yet and I don't know what software version is shipping with the new Montana's. However I do know that Garmin released a software update on June 14 (Thank you Allory!) Change History Changes made from version 2.20 to 2.40: Improved searching for Addresses and Intersections Fixed potential shutdown when leaving Recently Found list Fixed shutdown when navigating 'To Beginning' of GPI route Fixed shutdown when performing a mount-related Profile change while powering up Get it here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5335 .
  3. Yogazoo, I am impressed with the quality and detail of your images. How do you access and use the geotagging ability of the Montana? Do you have to use Google Earth to show the geotagged image on a map? Thanks again for your input on the pluses and minuses of the Montana 650. Your comments are helpful to me, and I await my 650 with anticipation.
  4. Thanks for the additional info Yogazoo. Yes, I also checked the Internet and was unable to find a compatible battery. Based on past experience with lithium ion batteries for digital cameras, I feel sure that within a short period of time generic batteries for the Montana will be available on Amazon and EBay. Have you taken any pics with the camera? If so, can you share one or more and discuss how the geotagging works? Have fun
  5. Splashy, Thank you for the info. There are numerous generic external lithium ion battery chargers. I feel sure that the battery type used by the Garmin Montana was not specifically designed for the Montana. Once the battery model # is identified, it should be fairly easy to find a lithium ion battery charger designed to externally charge the battery used by the Montana.
  6. Yogazoo, Thanks for the additional nuggets of information. Please keep the info coming when you have the opportunities. Here's a question. I am thinking of getting a back-up lithium ion battery, perhaps a generic lithium ion battery rather than a Garmin branded battery. Does the battery that comes with the Montana have an identification number on the battery?
  7. The brightest GPS device I own is the 60Cx (the dullest is the Oregon 300). Are you saying that the Montana is brighter than the venerable and much admired 60Cx?
  8. Thank you Yogazoo and Splashy for your tidbits of valuable information. The Zagg info was particularly informative. I look forward to my receipt of the 650.
  9. Splashy. I looked at the pictures of the Montana, and I can't locate a pair of openings where lanyard can be attached so one could, for example, hang the Montana around one's neck. Is there a place to attach a lanyard to the Montana? Thank you.
  10. I suggest you load the European maps on a SD Micro card. I have a 16gb class 4 SD Micro card installed within my Oregon 300 and I have a number of different maps available on the SD Micro Card. I hope that answers your question.
  11. Yogazoo, I see you went and did it... you ordered the Montana 650, and you should have it in your hands tomorrow morning... how exciting. I can't wait to read what you think of the unit, especially the screen readability in sunlight. I placed an order for the 650 with Amazon a few days ago. They are still quoting 2-4 weeks delivery.
  12. I had a tech problem with a Garmin GPS. I haven't called Garmin in about a year, and I remember that it was normal having to wait for about a 1/2 hour before I was able to speak with a Garmin tech rep. So, I called Garmin this morning prepared to sit by the phone for a long time before I spoke with a Garmin tech rep. I was surprised that the automated Garmin receptionist stated that the wait would be about 2 minutes. 2 minutes! I was shocked. I was even more shocked when a Garmin tech rep was on the phone line within 1 minute. He suggested what should be done to resolve the problem. I followed his instructions and the problem was solved and I was off the phone with Garmin in less than 5 minutes after I dialed the Garmin telephone number. THANK YOU Garmin!
  13. Amazon (US): "2 to 4 weeks." GPSCity: 22 June.
  14. Thank you for your reply. I stand corrected! I misread the data. In fact the 16gb sd shows 16gb's available and 4.78gb's used. Thanks again for your response!
  15. I recently purchased a 16 gb sd micro card for use in my Oregon 300. After placing the card in the Oregon, the card shows less than 5gb of available space. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks!
  16. I wonder if that was the backlight turned up or not. The backlight is very bright, but as we all know it's a battery burner. That's fine with me I carry rechargeable's anyhow Yes, I agree. Extra batteries are a small price to pay for a bright screen in daylight conditions. I am looking forward to acquiring the Montana... after I go to REI and first check the screen readability in bright daylight.
  17. The prerelease FCC version of the manual weighs in at 59 pages. The release version has 70 pages. Go here to grab the release version of the Montana series owners manual: http://bit.ly/ivFtab Thanks to GPSCity for the manual and GPSFix for the heads-up!
  18. GPS City updates the estimated date of delivery for the 600, 650 and 650T: Previously GPS City estimated a delivery date of 3 June. The delivery date has now been changed to 22 June. http://bit.ly/mhqwAl
  19. Changes from version 4.10 to version 4.20: Updated magnetic Earth field data Improved GPS performance Improved support for BirdsEye™ Satellite Imagery (each provider's imagery can be configured independently) Increased the maximum number of supported JNX files to 250 from 200 Fixed issues with WAAS/EGNOS Fixed issue with track navigation sometimes not adding waypoints to the Active Route list Fixed issue with MPC map labels disappearing Fixed shutdown on the map page when you have a geocache dashboard active and return after pressing the geocache name Fixed issue with photo viewer not displaying correctly Fixed issue with 3D view Fixed issue with track navigation not adding waypoints to the Active Route list when they are exactly equal to a track point Fixed shutdown when the device had more than the maximum number of JNX files on it Fixed shutdown related to topographical maps and land cover text size Fixed shutdown associated with certain custom POI files Fixed Glide Ratio to Destination field Fixed an issue related to adding a geocache as a point in a route Fixed an issue with magnetic north reference and waypoint headings Modified the 'Arriving at Destination' message banner so that it no longer appears when navigating to a geocache

  21. DRAFT VERSION OF THE GARMIN MONTANA OWNERS MANUAL IS NOW AVAILABLE. Thanks to Rich Owens for providing the link to the FCC which is reviewing the manual before approval of the Montana for retail sales http://bit.ly/mOaTeL When you get to the FCC site, download "USERS MANUAL 2." This is a pdf version of the 59 page manual.
  22. ... and to put this brick into perspective, an iPhone 4 weights 4.8oz, and has almost as big a screen. Oh please, what kind of perspective is that! Are you in the advertising business? I have an iPhone and to compare the iPhone to a dedicated Garmin receiver is ludicrous. But hey, I also know when enough is enough. This will be my last post on this bizarre subject.
  23. Feel free to feel that way, but realize that serious hikers may well prefer the readily available and less expensive rechargeable AA solution. The proprietary lithium pack was always one of the dings against the 500/550 in untethered use. Doesn't much matter. It's still a hell of a lot heavier than an Oregon, and MUCH heavier than the Dakota, and apart from the case and display, the internal bill of material will be very, very similar. If anything, one would expect higher levels of integration to help bring the size, weight (and cost) down. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the inside of one of these things. I agree with you that there are weight fanatics who stress-out about ounces, and will do anything to shave-off traveling weight. They should carry a Dakota or the Edge 705 (3.7 ounces) Uh, I am not that concerned about ounces. I am more interested in a big screen, a bright screen, a fast processor, and an accurate and fast gps processor. Is that asking for too much? I don't think so. Maybe the Montana 600 will do the trick for me. I hope so.
