  1. Matt, I look forward to your well written and informative reports on the 750. I hope you will convince me that the new version of the Oregon is a Big Yes, rather than a disappointing yawn. Neil

  3. Thanks very much, I understand now. But I've installed Javawa on my Mac and I don't see how to get the .img files onto it so I can change their internal headers. There doesn't seem to be an option within Javawa to load .img files, only to create backups, which is not what I want to do. I'm not a Mac user, but there looks to be a good guide on using JaVaWa with a Mac at http://springerphotographics.com/2014/03/21/using-javawa-gmtk-to-fix-open-street-map-garmin-files/ When you select the maps at garmin.openstreetmap.nl you are emailed a link to several versions of your chosen tile set. One of those versions is Mac installable. After you have installed it, it should appear as an editable choice in JaVaWa. When you have edited and saved it, you would use MapManager, BaseCamp, or MapInstall to transfer it to the GPS. As indicated in the referenced guide, be sure those utilities are closed while editing the map with JaVaWa. Here's a more "geeky" way to accomplish the same thing directly with a hex editor: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin#What_if_I_have_an_existing_gmapsupp.img_file.3F Hope this helps. Thanks for the tip. It was very helpful.
  4. I originally started this conversation; I would like to thank all of the people who replied so far. I have learned new and interesting information regarding Garmin TOPO Light Maps... Thank you. My question has still not been answered, unfortunately. Here it is again: Does anyone have any knowledge regarding the possibility of Garmin producing a North American version of their TOPO Light Maps? Thanks! Neil
  5. Hello Hans, Thank you for your reply. The Freizeitkarte maps look great. They do not cover North America, unfortunately. Regards, Neil Neil, you might want to look at Hans' links again (the "download" link). They do include different regions of the US, including the West. I'm downloading them right now! Ah, yes! Thank you Cliptwings and Hans. UPDATE: I downloaded the Freizeitkarte map of US Pacific. Meh, not nearly as good as the OSM map of the area.
  6. That is an excellent question. It was the first question I had about the Garmin TOPO Light maps. I found the answer to my question... and your question, at a Garmin UK web page, which is located HERE:
  7. Hello Hans, Thank you for your reply. The Freizeitkarte maps look great. They do not cover North America, unfortunately. Regards, Neil
  8. I have been using OSM maps with my Oregon 600 for the last 4 or 5 years, and have been pleasantly surprised with the number of trails and pathways that are shown on the map. The map area I am referring to is California. I recently learned that Garmin is selling their own version of OSM maps for Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Garmin TOPO Light web page I would be interested in purchasing the Garmin TOPO Light version of the West Coast of the US. Does anyone have any information regarding the eventual availability of Garmin TOPO Light maps of the US? Thank you
  9. I updated my Oregon 600 four days ago. I encountered no problems with the update and I noticed no changes or improvements to the Oregon's os.
  10. Nope, I don't think so. It appears that you have covered all of the highlights of the new version of the Montana.
  11. Thanks guys is that the main GARMIN Folder in internal , not a sub folder and not on the SD card that contains my OS GB 50 K mapping that came with the GPS ? Pete Yes, that is correct
  12. Changes made from firmware version 5.90 to 6.10: Fixed issue with barometer when auto calibration is turned off. Fixed missing ascent, descent, and elevation statistics when reviewing certain tracks. Fixed issue with power off pressure trending. Fixed issue with geocaching filter when the OpenCaching.com geocaching style is selected. Use Garmin Express to update firmware
  13. Changes made from version 3.80 to 3.90: • Improved average ascent and average descent data fields • Improved vertical speed and grade data fields http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6157
  14. Yes. As I said a couple of posts up, Webupdated downloaded the file and then immediately said it was corrupted and that my Oregon 600 was not updated. Sviking, I am not sure it this will work, but it is worth a try. I suggest that you remove the micro sd card fro the Oregon, reboot and try the update again, without the micro sd card installed. If that doesn't work I suggest you contact Garmin tech support. They may have a suggestion that will allow you to upgrade to 3.80.
  15. I use a Macintosh computer. Earlier today I used Garmin Express (version 2.5.3) to upgrade my Oregon 600 from firmware 3.70 to 3.80. The update was uneventdful and the Oregon 600 is now running firmware 3.80. In addition, so far I have had no problems using 3.80.
  16. Yogazoo, I have had no problems whatsoever with 3.70. I have used my Oregon 600 multiple times every day since firmware 3.70 was introduced on 31 January, and I am still booting the 600 using firmware 3.70. However, I am not using any Garmin maps on my Oregon 600. The only map I am using is an OSM of the West coast of the United States.
  17. Yogazoo, Did you try to remove the microSD card and then reboot?
  18. Firmware Update for Oregon 6xx series of GPS Receivers. Changes made from version 3.60 to 3.70 Added a separate zoom level setting for geocaches (Setup > Map > Advanced Map Setup > Zoom Levels > Geocaches) Added support for additional ActiveRouting cartography Improved GLONASS performance Improved display of marine-specific lines in BlueChart g2 maps Improved boot time when large amounts of photos are present Fixed map display of highway shields Fixed issue with incorrect letter capitalization of certain map points Fixed issue retrieving PLSS data in certain TOPO US 24k maps Fixed possible issue with +/- buttons when using Sight N' Go WebUpdater PLEASE NOTE: There have been a number of reports, on different forums, that the Oregon 6xx firmware update 3.70 can be problematic. If you have already upgraded, or plan to upgrade to version 3.70, please see Yogazoo's post #8 below, for a method to resolve potential problems caused by firmware version 3.70 My personal observation is that firmware 3.70 works fine. I have not noticed any problems whosoever. I should also state that I do not have a Garmin map in my 600. I use OSM maps exclusively, and I find them superior to Garmin's maps. GO HERE for more information about OSM maps for Garmin GPS's.
  19. The GPSMAP 64 has not yet been released for sale. It is expected to be available in late January or February. HERE IS the Garmin GPSMAP 64 introductory document
  20. I used my eTrex 20 when I visited Vietnam during March 2013. I only used the eTrex 20 as a track logger. I was very pleased with its accuracy and its excellent battery life. It proved to be a very small, accurate and economical track logger. Go to this gallery of images and maps to view the tracks the eTrex 20 logged while in Vietnam: GO HERE
  21. Well, I tried that, but of course for me, it didn't work. Got the map file, but when I put it on the SD card, it didn't show on the GPSr. Worked fine a couple of years ago when I did the same with CN. It sucks being technically handicapped when it comes to things like this. Hmm, let me see if I can make some suggestions to get the OSM map readable on your gps'r. First, do you have a folder named garmin on your sd card? If not, please put a folder named garmin on the SD card, and then put the OSM map within the garmin folder. Name the OSM map whatever you wish. i.e., osm.idaho.img. Make sure you have the OSM map chosen as the active map on your gps'r and make sure the Garmin map is not active. That should do it. If you still are unable to view the OSM map, please let me know what Garmin model you are using, the size of the OSM map you are trying to install and the size of the SD card. BTW, go here: www.openstreetmap.org to see what the OSM map looks like in the area of your interest
