  1. It sounds to me like you get a couple free nano containers to go hide elsewhere. Think of it as a gift.
  2. As a first responder, we do receive a lot of calls from disconnected cell phones and they are very hard to pinpoint. The triangulation can give a general area but that only helps a little bit when you are in a heavily populated area.
  3. Yes, that's what they mean. You can simply purchase any old cell phone and, without paying any fee, still have emergency access. I knew that. It just seemed that everyone else was taking what the OP said the wrong way. I just thought I would help clarify some. I guess I wasn't clear in my clarification that I was just clarifying.
  4. I knew that unknown fact. Pretty amazing, huh? I read the even if they have no service part as meaning even if they have no paid service from a cell company rather than physically having a usable signal..
  5. Your reviewer might be able to. contact@geocaching.com definately can.
  6. GC232W0 is Mystery cache - He Went That Way.
  7. There is a box you can check or uncheck when you submit a cache for review that disables it until you are ready. If it 'fails'review' for some reason it will still be in the que for the reviewer. If not corrected quickly enough the reviewer will either temp. disable it or archive it. Until it is archived, it is still in the que. Whether, or not this saves the spot , I'm not 100% but I would think it does for a short time.
  8. How do you handle your GPS when both hands are on a trekking pole? I always use 2 poles and I keep my gpsr hanging from my pack. On the long hikes, so far for me, you are following a trail for quite a ways so you dont need to check it but every now and then. The better ones will even beep if you are close so with them you dont even have to look until it beeps. Oh, and I use the cheapies from wal-mart that have twist locks and love them. Had them for over a year now and no problems hiking some pretty rough terrains. 10+ miles on at least 3 occasions.
  9. If they are, that's awesome! If they are not, at least the historically significant cache gets to live a few more years. Either way, I'm not seeing this as a bad thing. I, too, enjoy pulling up older caches and reading the logs. A new cache in the same spot definately would not have the fun of reading like the originals.
  10. Aside from the sheer silliness of 3 years as "older", once you drop your replacement, it isn't "an older hide". It's your new box. Older as in to qualify for the WRC grid. Some of them require it hidden before a certain date either in 07 or 08 depending on the state. In my area the closest of some diff/terr combos is over 100 miles away with the next being out of the state. If you are after a WRC that is state specific how will the next older cache help if it isnt in the state and wont qualify? Just because you replaced the box doesnt make it a new hide. If someone that has found it before confirms the spot then why not replace it? Sometimes the replacement could last years. Almost all of the original states hides have been changed numerous times and they are still the "oldest in the state".
  11. My opinion, for what its worth, is that there is nothing wrong with replacing it. Like someone else said, if it means something to you, then I would def. replace it. Also, if it is an older hide (2007 or before) with one of the harder to find diff/terr combos that a lot of people might use for the WRC Challenges then why not replace it? You can make a new cache but you cant replace the age factor.
  12. (bolding mine) This seems to be getting overlooked.
  13. Agreed. And I disagree. That you should not ask the forums for help on a puzzle cache is a longstanding tradition here that I happen to agree with. You're using somebody else's brain instead of your own when you ask for help here. Also, it is the cache owner's perrogative to give out hints, not ours. If asking is valid research, then ask the cache owner, not the forums. No difficult caches stay difficult after the first few finders. After that it just turns into a phone-a-friend frenzy. I didn't necessarily agree with asking on the forums, nor was that stated by bittsen, but asking in general. I'm not sure which the OP was referring to but there are plenty of caches out there with inactive owners.
  14. I would have cashed it in. The treasury will replace worn and torn money. If you had enough of the bill they would have given you a fresh one for it.
  15. You can't let paranoia take over and take possibly fun caches out of the picture because of one overzealous police department. I have found one with a fake owl hidden next to it that would "hoot hoot" at you when you leaned down to grab the container. It was great. I also found one with about 6 bottles stuck together and you had to unscrew the tops to find the log. 1 of them contained a spring "snake" that would pop out when it was opened. It was cool too, although a booger to put back in it. Anyways, the guy got the charges dropped quickly, and now has the chance to make a lot of money that he can buy new caching stuff with so don't worry too much about the Texas incident. Also, if hiding these types of caches, just be smart with it and take into consideration where you are putting it. Here in Alabama, it would never be a problem.
  16. This post is nonsensical, on several counts. 1. The iPad is fairly inexpensive, as far as portable computers, and in particular Apple computers go. 2. It has a rechargeable battery built into it that lasts 10 hours. 3. Groundspeak has offered a Geocaching.com app for the iPhone and iPod Touch for some time. I'm not sure if you're trying to be funny or inflammatory here, but either way this post is a massive fail. I wouldnt say massive fail. I read it as just trying to make a joke. The iTampon as some are calling it on the internet just seems useless to me. The iphone was awesome but the first time it slipped out of my hands the screen broke. I couldnt imagine the ipad lasting me very long. I wouldnt consider $500 base fairly inexpensive when you can get much better for that price in a new laptop that would probably be sturdier. The ones with more memory will be even more. Battery life does seem impressve but I don' see them being a huge hit.
  17. In GSAK click search > filter..then click the 'other' tab at the top..now look at the bottom of the window and where it says my found count set it to greater than or equal to 2 then run the search
  18. please do not listen to this fool, i have every other type of computer and dell is the best. i know this type of stuff, im a computer wizz I have a Dell 10v netbook, and it is working out well for me. My wife also has one and she loves hers. Dell definitely isn't the best money can buy, but in my experience (current netbooks plus several notebooks from a past life) they are not a bad option. To the OP, you may want to look into buying a used/older notebook. Also keep in mind for 200 pounds your options are extremely limited. Dell's are terrible and I would not buy another one. They are ok starting out but overall they are made of cheap parts that will break and they are hardwired so that you cannot upgrade very much if, at all. You might be able to add a little RAM but thats about it. They do this so that you can not upgrade it long and you have to buy another. Gateways are the same. Newegg.com is the best site on the web for computer related purchases.
  19. I have done 2 in one yard. At first I felt a little sketchy about it because I was new to it but I went for it. It was a good one too. The one that was off to the side of the house had a motion activated sprinkler head waiting on you if you walked across the grass up close to the house.
  20. No, no matter how immature and rude your log was it should not have been deleted even if it was left by someone who has never bothered to hide a cache of their own. a perfect reply!
  21. I have blackstar and it is ok but I much prefer cacheberry. It is free to try for 30 days and its $15 after that if you like it. I love it. http://www.cacheberry.com/ Blackstar is a good outdoorsman product but is not specifically for geocaching where Navigator and cacheberry are.
  22. In GSAK, select View->Add/Delete Columns then select First to Find. Put a check mark in the FTF column for the cache that you were FTF In GSAK You can also just right click on the cache name and click edit and there will be a First to Find checkbox.
