  1. not a website but I use google earth and the ruler tool included with it
  2. They did expand their search out that far but it is a 5 difficulty hide so they wouldn't necessarily have found it even with the right coords. I'm guessing they would not have found it. It took me about 25 minutes or so with the updated coords which may or may not still be a little off. Nobody seems to be getting a good reading in that particular area. I used my skills and got the FTF though.
  3. Quasi public property - "the more an owner, for his advantage, opens up his property for use by the public in general, the more do his rights become circumscribed by the statutory and constitutional rights of those who use it.” A shopping strip, or a mall, have events and stuff other than just shopping, so you would go there for events held on the grounds and not necessarily be expected to buy stuff. Not that I'm a huge fan of LPC's (I dont ignore them though), this somewhat covers some of the situations as far as adequate permission, at least until you are told no. In my area we have an LPC, that permission from the business owner was granted, and her husband didn't know and called the police, who in turn called the bomb squad. (only ours didnt go overboard like the ones in the stories) The owners husband now knows its there. So even with permission, it doesnt prevent the suspicious package calls.
  4. I dont know of anything that recognizes them automatically. In GSAK you have to go in and mark an FTF box for it to recognize.
  5. I think it sounds like a cool idea and by adding the second option you made the payphone optional. If the reviewer doesnt like it you can always appeal it to Groundspeak. I have done one similar where you had to send a message (cant remember if its email or text) and you would instantly get a reply email with coords to the second stage. It was fun.
  6. Emboss your name with the nonwriting pen..just like the scribbles. Someone on here signed a FTF log in mud once too. I remember them posting a picture of it. (They did it neatly as they could)
  7. You can get FM transmitters on the internet fairly cheap. I think it would make for a fairly neat cache depending on where you live. I always feel a little funny going to neighborhood caches. Maybe they just drive to coords on the street and listen to the proper frequency to get a clue or the coords but dont have to get out there. The only thing is that this might get your neighbors suspicious if you dont explain it to all of them. The traffic coming and going in short time periods may lead them to believe there are drug transactions going on (even though no one ever approaches the car people just dont use logic these days).
  8. I use cacheberry (made for blackberry) and love it but I wouldn't use the phone for a gpsr. The handhelds are usually (in my experience) much more accurate. Cacheberry is free to try for 30 days.
  9. huh, interesting. Intersting, indeed. I do remember that thread now that you mention it.
  10. The WalMarts in my area have a small watertight container very similar to a lock n lock that comes with about a 2 inch nylon strap attached with a carabiner on the end and it makes a great cache container. They are located in the camping section.
  11. I wouldn't say that I am suprised based on what the CO said about it. In MY experience around here I have had trouble with a couple of people with a lot of finds (though not near as many as that CO) so I kind of expect it. With that said, I have never met that particular cacher so it would either be that my expectations would be spot on or there is more to the story, like maybe some kind of history between the two of them. Notice I bolded the MY in the second sentence so you don't have to flame on me like I was speaking for everyone. I have had a couple of problems from some of the big finders in the past who think they are great so I somewhat expect it until I have some kind of communication with them and I find out otherwise.
  12. I have a cache that several people reported seeing a snake very neary the container. They all whined that that cache should be moved. I posted a nice little note on the cache page reminding people that there is an attribute with a snake on it to the right side of the cache page and that if they were afraid of snakes then they need not search for this one. About a week ago I was out in the woods looking for a spot to put a cache when I stepped on about a 3 foot rattlesnake. I was nice enough not to hide the cache in that particular spot although thats what I was doing when I disturbed the snake. I found a spot about 50 feet away but hes still close by.
  13. I have been having the same problem for 2 days now. Im glad I found this thread. I went in and just deleted the appropriate cookies and the problem was solved. Thanks to whoever it was that figured that one out!
  14. The L&F events will earn the standard icons. The 10 years! events will earn the special 10! icon if you meet the qualifications and Groundspeak approves that you did, in fact, meet the qualifications.
  15. People I cache with set up notifications for the area we are going to when we are going on a all day caching trip a few hours from home.
  16. I like them when they are in an interesting place and are of varying diff/terr levels. We have a nature preserve in North Alabama where there is an 8 cache series in the preserve. It was an awesome hike with caches at some of the more interesting places. I loved it.
  17. I think I wouldve turned the email receiver on my phone off that day! I could just imagine it going off that many times.
  18. A new cache dropped and I wanted to go after the FTF but I didn't want to hear my wife fuss about me leaving again. A minute after it dropped she told me to run and get some milk for dinner. Of course I was excited to rush out and get the milk so I ran by and made the FTF. Then I drove back home without any milk 25 minutes later when the store is literally on the corner of the entrance to my neighborhood. I realized this after I pulled back into the driveway so I had to dart back out after the milk. I got fussed at for taking too long but I was happy with my FTF.
  19. I like the idea of a power trail here.
  20. Logs like that are the reason I enjoy hiding caches. Thanks for sharing.
  21. to place some caches along this new hiking trail in Germany? New German Hiking Trail Saw it on Jimmy Fallon (No I wasn't watching, it was just on) and thought I'd ask. Edit: fixed link
  22. I like to use Google Earth for measurements. Also, if you have the coords of the one nearby then (while at the new cache site) you can use your handheld to figure the distance you are from that particular cache.
  23. There are a lot of differing opinions here and a lot of people don't like them but you only have to find each one once. They are ok to use in places that they won't see a lot of water but they will let it in eventually. IMO they are just cheap (usu. free) containers and I am thankful someone took the time to hide a cache because sometimes I still like the numbers runs so I choose not to complain about them. I don't see it easily being confused with trash when they are painted/camo'd because I don't know of too many people who paint their pill bottles. (I know they are not always camo'd though but usually when they aren't they are in a lampskirt.) A lot of times it will say on the cache page you are looking for a pill bottle and just like with any other type cache you don't like, don't look for it.
  24. I found one on Coco Cay which is Royal Carribean's private island and the only way to get to it is by sailing on one of their cruise lines. That costs a lot more than $1.33. Seeing as there is an attribute that says parking or access fee required I would say that a fee does not make it commercial. If they are not advertising or promoting on the cache page then it should be ok. Edit: Well, there is other ways to access the island but I dont know how long you would be on there before they ran you off.
