  1. I just want to say, a Big "thank you all, again" for your answers, your care and help. I have sold the GPS unit back to the store (less restock fee) and, it is my decision to leave the Geocaching to those who are better at than I. Messing with this thing for 15 days to no avail really took the wind out of my sails for this whole game. Again, you all were wonderful and many kuddos. Happy caching : Urorious, Md Players, Michigan Cacheman, Briansnat, dandabradford. happy geocaching to all !!
  2. No, I can't enter anything as it is on the cache sheet in any Navigation settings that I have. Going to see if I can take this thing back and purchase a Garman. Perhaps it will speak the Geocache language. Please send some positive energy my way. I'll be back and hopefully will be able to report that I have entered a Waypoint and am going to fine the cache.
  3. Ok, I just went and tried to create a Waypoint. Then I get to Lat/Long and the GPS will not accept any of the coordinates. It's like my GPS is not in the same language as the ones listed. I have nav. set on Lat/Long, yes, I'm set on WGS84. The different choices to choose from does not corespond to the choices on my GPS. Now, let me set to UTM and see if that works. I am about to pull my hair out here. I'll be back after using the UTM coordinates.
  4. I, too have a Magellan Triton 400. Perhaps the problem is that I'm trying to set up a Geocache rather than a Waypoint. I don't know. I have 1) homebase and have worked to enter this one cache position which, as I said will not accept any coordinates. I have the datum set at WGS84. I have read the manual over and over. I will go back and try to set the "geocache" spot as a "waypoint." Thank you all for your help. I now feel less conspicuous and, Team Juniper, thank you for the detailed info. Thank ALL of you for responding and helping. SkellyCA, may I please call on you again. I really have read the manual, I guess I am slow but I have such a desire to get going on this - all of you please hang in there with me. Good for you Team Juniper, Baylor is a great University ! Again, thank you all. I have a feeling I'll be back, however.
  5. Wow, thank you guys and lady for all of your responses to my questions. I have a Magellan Triton 500. I am a premium member of the Geocaching society. I am not as concerned about hand loading caches into the GPS. I have not been able to figure out why I can not enter the coordinates into the Geocache that I set up. This brings up some of the other questions I have. Such as, when I enter the letters and numbers on the Geocache sheets, for example...GCY9YJ which is for Maes Birthday Cache. first: do I make this a waypoint or a geocache? Second...I entered as GC0001maesbirth into my GPS as a Geocache. This way I have the name of my cache. Does entering these letters and numbers for this cache location automatically set the navigation coordinates into the GPS for this cache? I didn't think so but when I have tried to enter the coordinates given on the cache sheet, and there were ample choices to use, my GPS rejected every one them. My Magellan has these choices to use listed under Latitude/Longitude accuracy: DEG.DDDDD DEG/MIN.MMM DEG/MIN/SEC none were acceptable to what was listed on the geocache page for this cache So, I have yet to be able to start playing the game. I've just looked and the coordinates given on the sheet are not what comes up on the Lat/Lon for the cache named Maesbirth. So, I don't know why the GPS will not accept any coordinates unless the Magellan is in a different language than the Garman GPS. (?) I am a rank beginner and as yet have had any help until now. The folks in this area tell me they don't have Magellan so can not help. I sure appreciate all the responses from you 5 friendly folks. You all ROCK !! Any help is welcomed and appreciated. Thank you. OH, also, Waypoints. When to set, how to set. Are they points to lead the way to a cache? So, what comes first a waypoint or setting up a cache spot? I guess the question is mute since I can not get coordinates into the GPS, eh?
  6. So, I have asked and received help from a local Houston Geocaching group member who was very nice and helpful to me. The thing is that, most everyone uses a Garman and Magellan seems to operate differently than Garman and I have not gotten my questions answered yet. So, are there any Magellan Geocaching clubs in Houston? If anyone knows of any, please let me know. Or, if anyone can help me understand how to set up to begin looking for a geocache site, I would appreciate any help. I don't know difference between Waypoint, Geocache, route or trail. Which comes first...waypoint or geocache ? Does the letter/number used on GeoCache website represent the Geocache coordinates? (For example, GC 7JY8C) When I enter the letters/numbers of a Geocache, do the coordinates automatically get put in the GPS? If not, when I try to enter the coordinates from the page, none of the variations of coordinates are accepted by my GPS unit. So, I have yet to get started enjoying this fun game of Geocaching. What is waypoint to geocache? Do they "point the way" to the cache? HELP !!!!!
  7. It seems everyone has a Garman. There is very little help in the one Geocache club in my area. I'm lwondering if there are any Magellan Geocaching clubs. I don't even know how to begin geocaching because I can't get anyone who uses a Magellan brand. I just needed to respond because I think we are toast not having a Garman GPS unit. kathy wildkat12
  8. I am a rank beginner. I have read Complete Goecaching for Idiots, my Megellan manual and other print-outs from computer. I still do not understand how to enter cache into my GPS. Lso, is Geocache and Waypoint the same thing? Also, the numbers and letters on individual cache hides (for instance) GC1KRFX. Does this automatically set the coordinates into my GPS? I have only gotten this far: I have entered a GC number on Create Geocache. Beside this number I entered a name off the sheet for this number. When I try to enter the coordinates from the sheet, my GPS says the numbers are wrong. I have not gotten any further than this. I would appreciate it if someone who lives close to me in S.W. Houston could get with me and show me how to play this Geocaching game, It really sounds fun and interesting. Is there anyone out there who would take me under their wing and get me started? Once I understand, I'll be a most avid player. Thank you. Wildkat3@peoplepc.com
