  1. EpertGPS, you can change icons for only view then on maps. If you want an icon that is not in your GPS, click on file, then properties, click on the GPS tab, here you can change your GPS model to another GPS with has the icon you want to add to your maps. Go back to your waypoint and change your icon.

Remember, if you should upload waypoints to your GPS, you will need to change you GPS back to the original settings. The icons will stay the same on your maps, but uploading icons will create a default icon.

  2. Almost every time we use out FSR radios, the only time we don’t is when it’s a very short cache. My wife has her radio with our 9-year-old daughter and I have one with our 2-year daughter.

It comes in handy when your searching in an area with a lot of people all around you, this way you don’t stick out in a group of people. You can talk and let you hunting partners to move into another area without even being noticed.

I wonder how often these photos are updated ...

The photos appear to be several years old, at least were I live. 3 years ago I paved my driveway, still looks like it could be dirt. Several roads in my area and housing developments have gone in but there not in the photos.

Last December, I downloaded a free program from one of the links here in the forum, called USPHOTOMAPS. I tried to find the link but had no luck. Program is OK, you can up & download from PC/GPS as well as tracks.

Does anyone else know of this link???

I have seen him do it with his Maggelan with the square antenna but he says he paid about $250 for and that is too much for me to play.

You can buy cheap, or you can buy a real good GPS for little money. Look at Magellan 315, you won’t have maps like the new ones. You will have one of the best antennas for heavy tree cover. Upgradeable software, PC mapping capability and most of the bells and whistles you would ever want to get started in caching. Last weekend my family & I went on cache, after a ½ mile trek, my Mag 315 got me within 4 feet to the cache.

Do your own research, do a search at the top of this forum, and see for yourself how many caches have had good luck with the Mag-315.

You can get a new Mag 315 for about $129.00.

    Hope this helps. . .

  6. Ram Mount

Yes, worth every penny, I did allot ode research before desiding to buy a ram mount. I found nothing that could compare. I attach my Ram Mount so I could use it in my 97 Ford F-150 and in my wife’s 93 Caravan. I took a 2” PVC end cap, attaching the flat base (ball) Mount. My M-315 now fit great in my cup holder in my truck. In my wife’s van, I made a square wooden base about 4 inches, drilled out a hold matching the size of the PVC end cap to fit in. I did have a little trouble with it being a little top heavy, so I attached beanbag to it for weight. It sits fine on the dashboard.

  8. You could down load (EasyGPS / EpertGPS) http://www.expertgps.com/default.asp , EasyGPS waypoint management software, for free, this will give you the option to download your cache waypoints from Geocaching to a file created by EasyGPS, up load to your GPS, then download from your GPS to your DeLorme Street Atlas. Being that Delorme and Geocaching are not compatible I don’t know of any other way to transfer information. You may want to check Geobuddy www.geobuddy.com , I’ve read several posting on this waypoint management software, and I believe this is also free.

I use XpertGPS, works like EasyGPS but with topo mapping features great tool for only $60.00.

Any one else has any sampler suggestions icon_confused.gif.

    THE CHEMICAL CALLED "DEET"

DEET is the active ingredient in most synthetic repellents. "DEET" is short for a potent pesticide called N,N,DEETHYL META TOLUAMIDE. Research reviewed by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention has shown that once N,N,DIETHYL-META TOLUAMIDE absorbs in the body it can cause severe hives, rashes, muscle spasms, seizures and even death.

CHRILDREN ARE AT RISKThe National Poison Control Center in Washington, in 1995, reported over 6,700 cases of poisoning due to exposure to insect repellent, including one death. Two-thirds of these cases were children under six. Children are more at risk because they often end up getting higher doses of the chemicals in their bodies.

Their ratio of skin surface to body weight is higher, so they absorb more of the chemical than an adult. Also the insect repellent residue on their hands often ends up in their mouths. There are other risks. A study in the International Journal of Oncology linked exposure to DEET to testicular cancer. That same study also noted that this particular form of cancer has risen 68 percent between 1973 and 1994 in men ages 20-39 years of age.

  11. Using any insect repellent, which contains DEET with young children, I would call your doctor before using. Several years ago my daughters doctor advised us against using anything with DEET. I cannot remember why, but he highly stressed not to be used.

Anyone else heard, why not to use DEET on small children?

  13. I have to second what majicman says about Magellan 315, it has get to be one of the best receivers for heavy tree cover. A few months ago while on a cache hunt, we ran into another cacher on the hunt as we were leaving from our find. He had a Yellow Etrex, he was receiving only 2 sats, while I was receiving 5 sats with my Mag-315. I’m very much impressed with my Mag-315 for what I paid.

Anyone starting to get onto Geocaching that doesn’t need maps in a GPS should defiantly look at the Magellan 315 it is quite a unit.

  15. Not all cell phones are able to call 911. . . . If you have a used phone within the last few years, it will work. However, if you have one of those Miami vice phones or bag-phones you may not be able to call 911. Most of the older phones are not equipped to be used without actually having services.

If you have any question if your phone old dusty phone will be able to call 911, you may want too make a test call 911 before heading into the great outdoors.

  16. My mistake, I just went back to the site and read the owners posting how to earn credit for the find. It is clearly stated, “only on find per player/team.” I was wrong; the owner had every right to remove the posting. I guess I should have read it a little closer. icon_eek.gif

I’m glad the owner removed my second posting not the first one, I have a cool tank shot breaking through a wall at the Wright Museum, Wolfeboro NH. Check it out.

Anyone know were a tank is displayed, check out TANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=18037

  18. You can download you tracks and save then as a file, and view then on a topo map or aerial map. Draw tracks onto a map upload then into you GPS, plot waypoints, create waypoints, for the price you can do just about anything you can thing of doing with your GPS.

This program I think is great, other then caching, I use it for hunting, tracking deer movement every few weeks from mid summer to early fall. This gives me an advantage were to place tree stands for the upcoming bow-hunting season.
