  1. When I create a Waymark I take a fairly good picture, I post good coordinates and try to describe a little about the Waymark. I have a few pretty good Waymarks still in my camera and GPS because I will not take a stupid picture of my hand holding my GPS in front of my picture. Now I start noticing that there's a lot of categories that require a picture that Waymarks get published without the standard GPS photo. What's up with this? Maybe after all the old locationless people get their caches moved to Waymarking it will be different. I hate to see a nice Waymark cluttered up with a bunch of pictures of a hand holding a GPS. Anyway, I don't plan to play half a game. I guess the way I feel about the whole thing is Whatever. I was pretty excited about Waymarking in the beginning but I can take it or leave it.

  2. These waymarks that do not have the pic are in limbo until a pic is included.  I would hate to see these waymarks autopublished after any waiting period.

If the autopublish solution is enacted, I would like there to be an option for category owners to choose that shows that the owner has not ignored the submittal, but needs more information.

Why is a photo needed? <_<

For example, let us pretend there is an "Armadillo Statue" category, and you have a photo requirement for that category prior to a waymark being approved. Why is the photo required? Proof that the armadillo statue exists? I would posit that the first couple of finders would verify whether or not the statue exists! (uh, I went to this spot, and it was a dog statue).

Certainly, I can appreciate a category manager being concerned about the validity of the category. What if I am travelling, and happen to come across the most awesome gold-plated lugnut armadillo statue ever created, and I want to share this with armadillo enthusiasts, yet since I do not routinely carry a camera (I personally deplore photographic equipment, but that is another story) and do not have time to return to the site?

At first, I was enjoying the site very much, due to the comparative lack of logging requirements. It appeared at the start to employ the honor system, and I liked this! I thought this would be a great hassle-free online blog of my travels and experiences, since I was harming no one but myself if I "lied" and logged a waypoint. Then.... along came the "you have to do this and that" and "you have to provide a photo for proof" so that a waypoint or cateogory owner can "verify" I was there.

Personally, I believe in the best case, if we do not tread lightly we can add so many requirements the spirit of the service and the site loses the site's potential utility. In the worse case, we generate so many "what-ifs" we drive the web development team bonkers.

Again, I appreciate the efforts to manage the categories and waypoints, and attempt to maintain the site's integrity. It is just my opinion we are heading to regulation that takes the fun and ease using the site away...

I think they think they're still caches.

  3. I don't feel that it's in the spirit of the game as I first understood it to require photo identification for creating or logging. I know most if not all of the old locationless people are still requiring the standard GPS photo. I think that the new catagory managers or whatever you call them are not requiring this photo. This is going to determine whether I play the game or not because I will not take a stupid picture of my hand holding a GPS to prove I was there. If it's going that route I'll just pass on it.

  4. ok, so I'm full of questions tonight. I would like something clarified, if it's not too much trouble.

How are the logging requirements of a waymark set?

does the category owner set the logging requirements (it seems so)

can a waymark be submitted with differing requirements?

Example 1. A category owner says "post a picture of yourself at the waymark, next to this sign".

can the waymark owner blow off that requirement?

Example 2. A category owner has lax logging requirements - "just tell me how you liked the spot."

can a waymark owner then require photo verification of their particular waymark within the category?

I know that waymarks are initially vetted by the category owner and so the answers to both questions are probably defered to the category owner. Still, I'm wondering how others would answer these questions.

This questioin's too simple to get an answer here. Can you dress it up a little with a few college words? Might get answered then.

  5. Wow, this is the first Waymarking thread I’ve read, other than the one I posted.  The bad thing is that I agree with the OP and all the people lined up against him.

You can “own” a category?  What is that all about?  I wasn’t sure Seattle could find a way to introduce more angst into the game; this one thread shows it’s possible.  I applaud them for trying though.

I think I’ll also stay away from this new contraption.

For the first time in my recent memory I'm about to agree with Criminal.

  6. I know the category manager gives instructions for creating waymarks and also for logging them, A large number of waymark creators give logging instructions in their waymark. I know all the old locationless people are hung up on the "standard GPS in the picture" thing but I don't think creators have any control over the loggers. Is this correct? (Sorry, I have a hard time putting a question into cipherable words, hope this makes a little sense).

  7. I just tried to create a Wi-Fi Hotspot Waymark. I thought a Hotspot was a place to pull your car up close to the door or go inside and sit down if you don't have a good battery in your laptop. I can't even imagine how I would get all the info to fill out Jeremy's Hotspot create form. Do I not know what a Hotspot is? Are others making up answers to the questions? I tried to just ignore the questions but it wouldn't let me. Maybe I should try going into Mickey D's and asking them "What is your Probe Interval in Milliseconds (100)?". Is Jeremy pulling high tech rank on me? Whatever it is I just don't get it.

  8. I would never ever require a photo with you in it because I know how impossible that can be when you are in the middle of nowhere by yourself. I'll risk a few armchair logs rather than make it a game that cannot be played by everyone. It sorta hurts my felings that some category managers would choose to exclude me by requiring a photo with me in it.

  9. I've been playing around with Waymarking and was sort of getting to understand how it works. Then a couple of my Waymarks didn't get approved because I missed in the instructions that the Waymark page had to have a photo. This is all well and good if I knew what HTML is. I have no desire to know anything about HTML. Is this going to exclude me from Waymarking? ;)
