  1. Here in Ohio (Cincinnati area) it's not a problem other than a harmless garter snake or other non-poisonous variety. But in the Southern/Western states I imagine it could be a serious concern when searching around rocks or in the woods for a cache.

Oh, really? No other snakes in Ohio? Think again.

Since the OP is referring to the urban areas of SW Oh. I would have to agree that unless you're talking about the Cincy zoo, there is no danger of being bitten by a poisonous snake.

  2. I explain exactly what I'm doing. It's worked fine for the most part. Twice, I was asked to leave and I did. I understand people's concern with having folks poke around.

Sounds like the cache you were hunting was on private property without permission. In that case, I'd log a DNF and state that in my log. All cahes are supposed to have permission, but many do not.

The property owner and/or restaurant manager has the right to remove the Geocache.

Your story is one reason I dislike urban hides that "require" stealth.

Right,I pass on those kind as well. I started to find one in a town and realized it was hidden in bushes alongside a bank, forget it,I just don't believe it's a good idea to be spotted skulking around the shrubbery right next to a bank or some other business.

  3. I carry a S&W mod 640(.357 magnum) in hot weather and a Glock 30 sf(45acp,It's bigger, harder to conceal) in cool weather. Last year a bear became quite aggressive towards my Chihuahua(TN.),I backed off slowly and was able to get back in the cabin. I'm glad I was carrying that day.

  4. Pancho my chihuahua has been on most of my finds so far and he LOVES geocaching. He is very intelligent, when he sees me with my vista hcx in my hand he gets excited and follows me around until we leave.I have to hide it when I'm just playing with it or downloading. When people see me with him they just think it's a guy walking his little dog.In brushy areas I just pick him up and carry him without any problem since he only weighs 7 lbs.
  5. I actually know the people that placed the cache and they were questioned for hours on end. But in the end they didn't charge anyone. But I think Law Enforcement Officers should have a better understanding of our sport.

Sign of the times,9/11 took a lot of our freedoms away.
  6. Food for thought,I can get a blackberry fairly cheap if I renew my verizon contract. What is their latest model?

The latest would be the Storm, however I own both and in my opinion the Curve (mine is the 8330) has less issues, is much more robust and seems to have better overall usability and seems much more intuitive.

To also be fair, a Treo (the Palm version 650 or 700) works very well to and I liked mine in many ways more than the Blackberry, however the data plan is $50 a month and you have to get your support from the user community or Palm direct as Verizon is fairly clueless when it comes to this particular device. Saving over $400 a year on the data plan can buy a new GPSr.

So with the blackberry and internet plan will I be able to post finds to this site when traveling?
  7. If the only thing you will use it for is Geocaching, not really worth it. Besides, there are enough hotspots and open networks when you need to just to a quick post to just use your wireless.

The Blackberry, especially with Verizon, is probably the most economical. I pay $15 extra for unlimited internet but I got mine almost a year ago. Their plans have changed. My neighbor is paying $29 for unlimited on his blackberry he got a little over a week ago, but still fairly cheap for what you get, especially when compared to some other alternatives. You can then also get Cacheberry to have your database handy so internet is even less of an issue.

  8. I'm thinking about buying a mid range laptop and using Verizon wireless or? for my internet connection. The idea of being able to download or post finds while on the road appeals to me.Any info or suggestions are welcome, thanks.

I hope that Money is no object for you then..

Vwireless data plans can be somewhat expensive.

I normally will find a hotspot somewhere while caching to get extra info or connect to the internet.

There are a LOT of places that have wi-fi access hotspots.

Heck, you are right I didn't even think about all the wi-fi hotspots.
  9. Ok let me just say I'm fairly new to caching but not a premium member yet but I was wondering why some caches are PMO. If you have posted these caches what was your logic behind it. And if you do make PMO caches are all you hides PMO?

What are the benefits of making your cache members only? Do you wan't to keep the finds and attempts as low as possible? Do you want to create a exclusive level of caches? Or is it a safety issue that you think only dedicated cachers should try? Do you feel it harms or helps the sport to list caches one way or the other?

My feeling is if I put hard work into making a challenging cache that few would try I would like to share it with as many people as possible.

Again I'm not passing judgement for or against and plan on being a premium member soon. Just curious for why folks decide one way or the other.

I have several PMO caches reason being they are Travel Bug Hotels, and before i had them as PMO many cachers with little or no experience that were not PM would take trackables and then not place them and they would go missing, as a PMO cache I feel the level of cachers have more experience and are more serious about Geocaching.

I like this explanation the best, even someone new to the sport such as I can see that there are people who take tb's etc. and do not log them.I moved a bug to a travel bug dump recently and afterwards wished I hadn't because I felt non cache members might find it.Hope it falls into the right hands.
