  1. would like to trade or buy a set...please... Jamie - NFA
  2. I left 16 geocoins in caches this weekend...8 of my personal {NFA} geocoin, and 8 of my TFTC! geocoins... I was wondering how many other members of this forum are actually circulating the coins they have made or purchased through geocaches... Jamie - NFA
  3. I got an email last night about a cache that I archived about a month ago...the person said that they got to the right spot, and so would like to log the cache as a "found"...maybe I'm overly strict, but I feel like if the cache has been archived for almost a month, there's no cache at the location, and you didn't sign a logbook, you really shouldn't log it as a found... What would you have done? What have you done? I have no wish top be mean, but it seems a bit silly to me... Jamie - NFA
  4. Let me start out by saying that I fully support the rule of no food in caches...I think that it makes sense given the wide array of containers that people use, that food might spoil, that food might attract wee-beasties (and some not so wee...), etc. That being said, I setup a private cache last year for our local geocaching group, and have been watching it for about a year, and have yet to see any animal activity associated with the food inside the cache. The cache contains some beef jerky, some sealed convenience store brownies/cookies, and some homemade gorp in ziplocks... I live in the Adirondacks, home to moles, vole, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, mink, fishers, martins, oppossum, wolves, coyotes, bears, etc...and not only has the ammo-can not been muscled open for its food treasure, it has not been scratched or even moved from its original location... I just find it interesting that in a wildlife-rich area, a cache that is chock-full of food has not been molested in the least... Jamie - NFA
  5. HIDE IN PLAIN SITE! On a recent vacation to Maine, I went out caching with my almost 4 year-old son Ben, and 2 of the caches were in muggle-rich environments...rather than skulk or hide, we went all out, and Ben even wore his lobster hat. With a little kid, you can get away with almost anything...tons of people saw us, but nobody paid much attention, even though we were meandering around with a GPS and eventually trading/logging. Ben makes great camouflage, and has a great time geocaching...you should try it with a kid! Nobody...nobody...thinks you're up to no good when you're wandering around and playing with a screaming and giggling and singing little boy! Jamie - NFA
  6. Hi, This category didn't pass peer review last time around, and there were some very helpful comments in the peer review voting wrap-up...it has been redesigned with those comments and advice in mind, and is more precise and descriptive this time around. I would ask that you go to the Waymarking.com site, look at the new categories voting section in the directory, read through the canoe/kayak trip category, and vote "YEA" to help add this new category tothe Waymarking site. Thanks, Jamie - NFA
  7. "URP" is the sound that I make when I'm surprised by something icky but not really scary...like a slug in my sneaker or half a worm in an apple... Jamie - NFA
  8. This category is in the officer review stage, and will hopefully then go on to the peer review vote... thanks, Jamie - NFA
  9. Hi Ambrosia, I've thought about the rafting and float trip thing quite a bit, and think that I'm going to leave the category as is for a couple of reasons: rafting trips could fit, but they are, in some ways and in some cases, different from canoe & kayak trips (often run by commercial outfits, and as such, less likely to be of as much use as waymarks as canoe/kayak trips)...I won't delete them from the waymark category if people add them, but they are not exactly the same thing float trips are fundamentally different from canoe and kayak and rafting trips in that they aren't paddling trips...I like float trips, but they should probably be in a different waymark category than the trips waymarked here I'm not doing this to exclude fun trips, but to keep the focus of the waymark category tight and accurate. Jamie - NFA
  10. Howdy, The category failed to pass peer review the 1st time around, and then I went off to Maine for a week, but I'm back and have reworked the category based on feedback from the peer review voting as well as from comments here and some emails that I got...please tell me what you think... Thanks for your help!!! Jamie - NFA
  11. I use the term hydrocache to refer to a cache under the surface of the water...I call one that I have to paddle to a canoe-cache...go figure... Hydrocaches that I have placed can be identified by the cache name and by the use of the attributes (the same is true of canoe-caches that I have placed). I'll be waiting for the geo-lingo police, and promise to go quietly...
  12. I placed an un-decoy cache not too long ago... The coordinates take the cacher to a cool spot with plenty of hiding spots, and there are 4 containers hidden within the error circle...geocachers are asked to include a code word found on the lid of "the" cache in their log, which lets me know which container they found. Many finders find one, only 1 has found all 4 containers... Jamie - NFA
  13. I'm still stuck on an earlier post suggesting that waymarks might be illegal on NPS land...I don't know how this could be, or what possible damage could be done by waymarks...If I'm allowed to walk there with a camera or with a GPS, then I am capable of Waymarking de facto...and can't see how or why NPS could/would care. jamie - nfa
  14. Hi Jake, Thanks for the vote, and for the suggestions...those sound like good ideas...another one that someone sent me was a difficulty rating...any other suggestions are certainly welcome...these refinements can be put in place after the category passes peer review. Jamie - NFA
  15. Hi, There is a new category in the peer review section of the Waymarking site. The category is Canoe and Kayak Trips, and the text is shown below (with a couple of typos from the category online, which I will fix as soon as the category passes peer review): I hope that you will vote "YEA" for this category, and send me your thoughts on it...or post to this thread. Thanks, Jamie - NFA
  16. Hi, I'm looking for a few people interested in becoming members/officers in a new group...and then going on to create a category in the area of canoe & kayak trips. The category will entail marking the launchpoint of a canoe or kayak trip, describing the trip, and uploading pictures and maps of the trips. Canoe Trips Waymarking Group Thanks, Jamie - NFA
  17. I'd love to trade for one of my personal geocoins... Thanks, Jamie - NFA
  18. I've had some issues with my meri-plat since my trip out to NV/CA/AZ this spring, specifically coordinate reading accuracy. I've noticed a difference both in finding and hiding caches...finding them seems to take a bit longer, and the GPS seems to be less accurate and more prone to compass swing than before...hiding them, I get comments from cachers who say that my coords were 100 feet off (where I formerly got complements on the extreme accuracy of my listings)... I don't think that I'm doing anything different in hiding or seeking caches, but the meri-plat seems to work less well than it did before my trip... has anyone else experienced something similar? is this possible? am I just getting bad at geocaching? will initializing the machine help? will reloading the system software help? Thanks, Jamie - NFA
  19. I stopped the officer vote on the superb steak 'stablishments category...no need for redundant categories. Jamie - NFA
  20. would you like to trade personal geocoins? Jamie - NFA
  21. I sent the category back to officer review, and hope that all of the officers vote this time... I noticed that there is another copy-cat category up for peer review...too bad those people didn't feel like joining the original group and working together to make a category, but what can you do? If you're an officer in this group, please vote yes on the category, if you're not, just wait a couple of days and hopefully the category will be out there for peer review. Thanks, Jamie - NFA
  22. I would suggest voting no on the steakhouse category currently in the peer-review line-up, as it is seriously lacking in details and isn't really much of a category proposal. It's obviously a copy-cat who didn't bother to put any effort or thought into the category, just wanted to be first... Wait until mine comes out... Superb Steak 'stablishments Jamie - NFA
  23. a cheap knock-off??? Perhaps someone read about my proposed group and/or category, and wanted to get in before my proposal hit the Waymarking community...to be fair, I've been busy, and so it's been awfully slow... Jamie
