  1. A few days ago some people found one of my caches <http://www.geocaching.com/seek/ cache_details.aspx?ID=30222> and while they noted that they didn't 'find it' in their logs, they logged it as a 'found' cache anyway. They probably couldn've signed it very easily- the paper log IS wet and I've not had time to go change it yet. I don't know if I should let it stand or if I should e-mail them aobut it. I don't like the idea of people logging finds just for being 'in the same general area' as the cache, but at the same time these people are new and I don't want to turn them off to geocaching either. Any suggestions? Matt When facing a difficult task, act as though it is impossible to fail. If you're going after Moby Dick, take along the tartar sauce. -H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
  2. Just my opinion... This is getting too deep for me. Would I leave one? No- I wouldn't want to explain that kind of things to kids, so I in turn wouldn't want to force that responsibility on anybody else. (I also would like to think I might be able to make better use of it that as a cache item, if you know what I mean...) Would I take one? Only if the cache was located in aisle 9 in the local Walgreens... Peace out, Matt When facing a difficult task, act as though it is impossible to fail. 3. I find that videotaping a hunt at first feels rather dorky and unnecessary, until I get home and view the tape- or until I view the tapes while theres a foot of snow on the ground! It's also a great way to introduce non-cachers to out sport! I also like showing fresh footage to my father, who first pointed out the article in USA Today that introduced me to this sport... He seems to really get a kick out of watching the video... He's not the 'hiking' type, but he still likes seeing what his son is up to. As far as still pics, ever since I got my new Clie (a Palm Pilot with a camera), I'm taking pictures of all sorts of things on cache hunts! If you have a camera, try taking it on your next hunt! 4. Does anyone have an opinion on electronic compasses? I just want something that might be a bit better than the $5 jobby I bought at Wal-Mart, plus I like the looks of this one as well... But is ther any reason why I should stay away from this one? B000069119/qid=1038700500/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_8/ 104-3634646-6848713?v=glance&s=electronics> Thanks, Matt
  5. I'm thinking about cutting the blade off of one of my old hockey sticks to use the shaft as a hiking stick... In the spring I will probably wind up buying a stick that can break down to fit in the trunk of the Miata...
  6. I understand that all kinds of personal 'freedoms' might be violated by a city-wide camera system... but in this day and age we are video taped prettymuch anywhere we go. I used to work at a major retail store and was amazed at the quality of camers they had... they could freeze a frame, zoom in, and read your drivers licence as you were handing it to a clerk... Yes, you are being watched! Back to the topic, I was primarily refering to he use of 'spy' satellites. Think Terraserver pics or 'Enemy of the State' or something like that... I sometime think that maybe they spin the Hubble around and take a look at what out neighbors are doing when deep space goes to commercial! -Matt
  7. Just wanted some feedback on this idea... I assume that the authorities can figure out where a shot comes from and the approximate time that a shot rings out... Might they be able to reference sat. surveillance images at that time and location and look for anything out of the ordinary? Maybe even locate and track a suspicious vehicle? I know that you wouldn't be able to see license plates or a person or anything, but I figure you could see SOMETHING... I'm sure they are doing all they can... this is just something I've been thinking about for the past few days...
  8. Not sure if you could do this, but hooking a webcam up to a telescope would be cool... Also, while it's not visual, a boating signal horn in the cache would let you know somebody's there. Not sure what your neighbors would say about all that, though...
  9. I would wonder just how much it would get used, but it would be nice to have nonetheless... Maybe just add it to the GPS forum: GPS/PDA? I love mine (Sony NR70V). It is my second brain (and sometime my first) and I don't know how I got along without a PDA... I keep my MP3's on it, Update my caches with it, maintain my Quicken accounts with it, use it to turn on my TV, take pictures of geocaching stuff with it... you name it. AND I've been into these things less than a year! As soon as they Release the GPS Memory Stick in the 'States I will get one ASAP. Now if I could only get textbook makers to offer a Palm Reader version of their books...
  10. For me it was an article in USA Today... sometime last year on the front of the Life section. The next week I found a Mag 315 on Amazon for $70 and have been addicted ever since. What about you?
  11. I'm such a sucker for gadgets! First I bought a Sony Clie NR-70V (Palom Pilot w/ a camera built in) and now I hear they might come out with a Memory Stick GPS... Well, they finally have released the thing -IN HONG KONG!!! Does anybody out there have any experience with these or know the US release date? I'm having to use R.E.S.T.R.A.I.N.T. to not get one for my Clie (which I carry around with me all the time). FYI, The Bluetooth 'stick this place sells works here in the states. Thats how I found out about Brando. IF I wind up buying the thing I'll post a full review out here for y'all!
