  1. I use the ATT Fuze. You can install whatever you want to it and has some great free windows mobile apps for it from www.freewarepocketpc.net check it out if you're still looking at options.
  2. As far as the Illinois area grocery stores go they dont usually carry prepaid sim cards. You can buy basic prepaid phones and additional prepaid minutes for them for $20-40. Otherwise youll need to seek out specific phone stores to purchase the Sim cards you're looking for. I really cant say what is specifically available on the east coast however. Hope this gives you some idea.
  3. have you scoured free software sites such as http://pocketpcfreewares.com http://www.getjar.com/software/ these are great places to start looking for leads.
  4. If you have an ipod, the cache listings can be transferred to it. Otherwise any cheap functional pda will work. If you have a phone with a data plan you can just look up the listing ahead of time and keep it loaded on the phones browser. Or you can do what I did and borrowed a PDA my brother hadn't used in years.
  5. I wonder if he means his basemap is for those regions and is worried it will be erased?
  6. I second the Vista HCX. Small, not too bulky, is sturdy, waterproof and has amazing battery life!
  7. Much of it is personal preference. If you feel more comfortable zooming in on the map screen then go ahead and do it that way. I only recently tried the compass screen and find that it works well when getting closer to the actual cache location. Experiment and see what feels best for you.
  8. In short, yes you can geocache with a phone. My general experience has been that geocaching can be done with some model phones. It depends largely on phone model and carrier. If you can find software to run on your phones the biggest limitation I run into is very short battery life when using the built in GPS. About 3 hours (for my phone) makes it pretty hard to do more than a couple caches at a time. I would recommend getting an entry level gps. Try looking in the gps garage sale forum where you can find some amazing deals.
  9. I have found my Merigold needs to be initialized after long periods of inactivity. This may have been you units problem. I suspect it will keep performing great until another long period of inactivity (several weeks or more is my experience.)
  10. Four years ago I was researching affordable GPS units to help me get to my honeymoon destination. During the process I discovered several articles and reviews that mentioned geocaching. A week later I was searching up a storm trying to locate local caches!
  11. After looking at the Garmin website it looks like the Legend HCX is essentially the same as the Vista HCX. Seems the Legend is cheaper as it lacks the compass and altimeter functions. Personally I have never used them on my Vista and you may want to go for the cheaper of the two models. This way you could spring for a memory card and City Navigator if you would like better turn by turn navigation than what is out of the box. That said I personally love my Vista HCX and highly recommend it. It locks onto satellites fast and keeps it locked. Plus the awesome battery life blows my old Magellan Meridian Gold out of the water! Either way you'll be very happy with whichever one you choose. Have fun! P.S. Its called Geocaching (as opposed to geocashing) even though I suppose you do hafta spend some cash at first
  12. I dont have any experience with the standard version of city navigator but have read several users comments that it runs much faster than the NT does. For me NT seems to be a bit slow. 3 second delay slow. It can really mess you up when pressing enter several time because you cant tell if it registered or not. It can be a real headache. I am really noticing it when trying to lookup recent finds/searches and it takes 3+ seconds to do anything at all. Regular navigating seems to be OK but not that good either. Particularly detailed areas can be painfully slow and I'm starting to wonder if I can exchange the NT version for the regular one. Many users have reported success doing so. Hope this helps.
  13. Stumbled across www.gpsmission.com and wondered if anyone has tried it out. If so how was it? Seems like a variation of Wherigo but uses a web based mission builder. Let me know what you guys think!
  14. This was something I was wondering myself. How do you switch between the two map sets?
  15. I read somewhere on these very forums that a Garmin rep suggested that the NT maps really aren't all that great for handheld models as they don't utilize the same indexing features that automobile models do. Thus the lag we experience. I also had some strange problems reinstalling my NT 2008 until I stumbled onto the unlock map section at the Garmin website. This seemed to work for me so maybe this will be an option for the OP?

  18. I seem to remember cursing Service Pack 2 for causing this very problem. Don't recall how I came to this conclusion. However a fresh install with SP2 does indeed run DR 1.0 for me.
  19. I think the Vista HCx is also listed to support only NT as well but it supports the non-NT maps. BTW, where the heck to people buy the full (non-update) version of 2008 NT? I see it at REI for $130 and that's about it other than a couple of smaller places I've never heard of. GO$Rs I had a great experience form these guys! http://www.antonline.com/p_Garmin--0101081...n-8-_256385.htm Ended up being 2008 NT even though its listed as version 8. Even if its not I was told by several people that Garmin will provide a free upgrade during registration. Hope this helps!
  20. To the OP, Please explain the game. I'm sure all the clever members here could come up with a working solution for you if more information was provided.
  21. Every car I have seen overestimates the speed. I've read that car manufacturers do this so as to prevent liability issues if the speed displayed was too slow and people got tickets because of it. Displaying a higher than actual speed allows for variability in displayed speed due to tread wear and other factors and still keeps the displayed speed at or above true speed. Cool, well thats good to know that my GPSr is more accurate than my car I'm wondering if having the screen wash out on me is worth contacting Garmin about or just dealing with restarting everytime to fix it....... Another topic was discussing this very problem. They seem to think that this is caused when the unit is cold when first turned on. Unknown if the internal thermometer is the culprit here or not but at least they have a plausible explanation. Users have reported that units that were kept overnight in a cold car would behave this way but then the problem would go away if it was simply stored indoors. Sorry I can't remember more. Maybe try the search function for "washed out display" Best of luck!
  22. This is strange behavior. The update didn't have any documentation so I'm curious as to what this version fixes/changes. Anyone know?
  23. If any of you guys watch Mythbusters, you will remember that they debunked that theory about magnets affecting credit cards.
  24. Hmm, then if that is the case then these guys have the wrong info posted about it here? http://www.erwincomputers.com/0101081600.html They say it has the 2008 maps, so I'm not sure what to make of this. Thanks for the help!
