Problem Deleting Region Form Sportrak Color
Bowfin replied to Bowfin's topic in GPS technology and devices
Nevermind, figured it out. had to change databases, delete the second.dat, reboot, then upload the new routes. Seems like there should be a better way. Fin -
Seems simple but it's not. I tried to upload 3 new regions for a road trip I'm going on from Mapsend S&D. I get a "not enough memory error". Only 1K or so left. So i go to clear the memory, clear all the memory, reboot, and the two old regions are still there. I go to the gps menu and attempt to the delete map data files and can't delete the "second.dat" map because it is in use. . What am I missing? How do I remove the old regions to free the memory to load the new regions? I haven't done this in about year and it isn't listed in the manual. I searched the forums and came up with nothing. I've seen the posts saying the new regions will load over the old regions, but they don't. I've also seen where it was suggested to clear the memory, but it still didn't delete the uploaded regions B

Purchasing First Gps
Bowfin replied to RVA_Scooter_Girl & Matty Syxx's topic in GPS technology and devices
I would wait to see how the new Magellan Explorer series units are. They come out in July and should range between $100 to $200 retail, so mail order should be a good bit cheaper. The mid and upper end models have mapping features, with the top end model also having a magnetic compass and altimetere. I have a Spotrack Color and am satisfied with it for the price ($250 new at Vanns.com). I do wish it had removable memory, but otherwise it is a good unit. some people say the display is hard to read, but it looks fine to me. If I were looking to spen twice as much, I would check out the Garmin 60CS and 76CS. I like color and would never go back to a black and white. Bowfin -
How do I get more than 4 regions loaded to my Sportrack Color from Mapsend? There has to be a work around. it makes it real difficult to plan a interstate trip and only have 4 regions to work with. B

Thinking About Getting Magelan Color
Bowfin replied to J. Galt's topic in GPS technology and devices
I've had no problems reading my STColor in direct sunlight. Bowfin -
No pics, but i just bought one for my sportrack color. I like it alot. I have no trouble pressing keys throug the clear plastic. The clip is a detachable belt clip similar to the cellphones. You press the end pf theclip to open it and attach it to your belt. The case also has an access hole in the bottom for the batteries ina STPro or map. Unfortunately, because of the redesigned case, the battery access won't work for the color. Nice little case for around $13.00 online. i got the blue for visiblity in case I drop my gps in the water or on the trail. Bowfin

I had the same struggle a month or so ago. Then i saw Vanns.com had the color for $253.00 shipped and made my decision for me. the color has a different case design than the Pro, so none of the stress crack problems of the other Sportcracks. It has a much better battery compartment with spring loaded fingers to keep the batteries more securely connected. It also has backlighted keys for when you are using your color at night or in the car for navigation (with direct route?). not to mention the barometer, thermometer, and electronic compass. I'm satisfied with my decision. i use the Topo software with mine and it meets my needs pretty well. Bowfin

I also have the sportrack color and I was amazed at the extra shoreline detail I got with the Topo software. It even showed some old sawmills that were flooded to make the resevoirs near my house. It also showed a lot more streams and creeks that the basemap didn't have. It is a big improvement over the basemap. I don't have any experience with Direct Route, but I do know that the Navtech online maps don't have any water detail, which is the main reason i went with Mapsend Topo, even though it is a three year old product (2001 copyright). A bonus of the Topo software is the same street detail as Streets and Destinations, but without the street POIs that are inaccurate and outdated anyway. There is a Mapsend topo 4.02 for sale in the Garage Sale forum for around $45 and I can vouch for RockyRiver who is selling one of the Topo packages. How is the Direct Route working for caching? have you noticed any problems with the routing off of the road? Bowfin

Gary and Mary Adventurers, you have mail on the extra car mount you have. I would be glad to take it off your hands. i have a Sportrack Color and no visible cracks. As mentioned previously, there is a big difference in the case design, so I don't expect any problems. Anyone out there have a cracked ST Color? I almost went for the Pro until I saw the Color advertised on Vanns.com for 253.00 shipped. Sure glad I went with it over the Pro. Bowfin

Magellan Sport Trac Map Or Garmin Etrex Legend?
Bowfin replied to 4 Dorsey's's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have Mapsend Topo form Magellan and it has street detail as well as some other cool elevation infortmation. It also ahas alot more river, crekk, lake detail that I desired sinceI fish and Kayak. It even lists some old mills on a lake that has been flooded for 80 years, a deffinite plus for any fishermen. i have never used Garmin Topo, but it doesn't have the street detail from what I have researched. Maybe a Garmin user can comment on the Garmin Topo. I also have the Mapsend streets and destinations and the Topo has the same street level maps without the Streets and Destinations POIs. I use it ona Sportrack Color, and i am very pleased with my Magellan. Both Manufacturers seem to make a good product and I have heard of great support from both. I believe the Legend has 2 meg more memory than the Sportrak Map. Go for the Gold if you are going to get a Magellan, I am now wishing I had the SD card memory feature for my Sportrack Color. Using Mymeridian To Modify Sportrack Color
Bowfin replied to Bowfin's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'll have to check for the "Woodall's screen on my Sportrack since i am uploading and downloading maps anyway. i never noticed it before. I really didn't want to reload the firmware anyway. i haven't used Direct Route yet. Does it work well on the ST Color? I've heard it modifies a lot of settings and was wondering what that would do to my caching screens (routing with map and compass). Thanks for the help. Mapsend sure makes the GPS a lot more useful and fun. It also adds a lot of detail to the lake shorelines, rivers, and creeks which is what I was after more than than the street POIs. Works great, thanks again RockyRiver. Thanks, Bowfin -
anybody use MyMeridian to modify the lawyer screen on their Sportrack series. i have a Sportrack color, but the program is designed for the Meridian series. Bowfin

Mapsend Streets And Destinations Usa
Bowfin replied to RockyRiver's topic in GPS technology and devices
Great transaction. I met Rockyriver and his family Saturday when I picked up the Mapsend software. I got the Mapsend plus he gave me few other extras that are much appreciated. I believe he had more GPSrs than BassProshop had on display and he can give his unbiased opinion on all of them. I would buy from him again with no reservations. Bowfin -
Are There "use In The Case" Cases?
Bowfin replied to briggsmail's topic in GPS technology and devices
Magellan makes a great one for the Sprotrack series. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you stuffed a Garmin in there. It is made of Neoprin and says Magellan in large letters on both sides Fits my Sportrack Color perfectly and has a pretty cool removable beltclip. It might even help the 60c float if dropped in water. Seriously, being made of Neoprin, it may stretch and it is well constructed. The front is clear plastic with the sides and back of neoprin. it's worth a try if you have a friend that has one. i have never seen a Sportrack and 60c side by side to compare. I bought mine for $12.85 online. Bowfin -
Beginner Looking For Inexpensive Gps
Bowfin replied to MLaguna's topic in GPS technology and devices
Bought a Magellan Sportrack Color from Vanns.com for $253 shipped. Great little unit. Floats, color, mapping, elctronic compass, temperature, barometer. Case doesn't crack like the earlier designed Pros and Maps. Bowfin -
Mapsend Streets And Destinations Usa
Bowfin replied to RockyRiver's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'll take it. you have mail once again Bowfin -
I'm sorry to here you got scammed. Makes it tough for newbies like myself when purchasing off the forums. There is an element of trust for both parties when purchasing online. I have sold two items over the web on forums and have had good success with both. When I sell, I accept postal check or bank/teller check so there are numbers to track and a bank to contact. i always wait until I receive and cash the check before I ship the item. You can ask their username and search the forums to see how sensible they are. If you aren't comfortable with them, terminate the sale. I hate ebay, as there are too many fees involved and by the time you bid a good price, you have to check back several days later and try to bid again, but usually it goes for near what you could buy it for online new. It is probably great if you are a seller, though. I hope all your other sales go well. As a side note, found my first caches this weekend at and near AJ State Park. What ablast this is. My 2 year old loves the idea we are looking for treasure Bowfin

Shoreline Detail Of Mapsend Streets Vs. Topo
Bowfin replied to Bowfin's topic in GPS technology and devices
I didn't realize Mapsend also had a Streets program. I edited my post. I meant Streets and Destinations USA v4 vs. Topo v4. Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize until I clicked your link that i had already read a few of your articles. Good info. Bowfin -
is the shoreline detail and river/lake detail greater with Mapsend topo v4than Mapsend streets and destinations USA v4? My basemap on my Sportrack color is very weak when lookgin at the river and inlet detail. I do alot of fishing and Kayaking, but I also want streets for my GPS. I don't care about elevation lines, so which is better suited? Any special POIs with topo that streets doesn't have that you find useful? i am thinking that topo should have greater shoreline detail than streets. Am I correct? Bowfin
