  1. I've been getting a lot of bogus logs lately - mostly Germans, as usual - including one from horser.

    I wish there was a way to lock these trackables to prevent this waste of my time. Also, it used to be considered a violation of the ToS (wasting Groundspeak resources with this nonsense) but it seems that's no longer the case. Being able to complain & have these abusers banned would be some disincentive to them, you'd think.

  2. I find the souvenirs meaningless or worse, since they don't accurately reflect places I have actually been. I guess I don't see it as being "gifted" with some wonderful piece of artwork either. If I get junk mail in the mail, I can throw it away, it's not permanently pinned to my house! :anicute:

    I'd just like to opt out of souvenirs entirely.

  3. Always mid-day somewhere - this is a world-wide activity.........

    Really, that's the best you can do? Seriously??? Because they couldn't possibly have server logs that tell them when the high and low traffic peaks are. And I'm going to hypothesize that noon Pacific Time is a heck of a lot closer to the high traffic peak than the low.

    Please.

    1. There's way too much whitespace. Too much ugly.
    2. The practice of bringing the site down mid-day, without apparent warning, should stop.
    3. A better system for determining bugs & gathering user feedback should be in place.
    4. You have a Twitter account. You do know you can use it to communicate?

    Seriously, this sort of thing is costing you money. I know more and more people that are opting not to renew their premium memberships because of the way you manage the geocaching.com site. I'd vote with my wallet too if it wasn't for PQs.

  4. Are any of you that are both HAMS & geocachers involved in SAR? If so, which GPS unit do you use? Do you also use dogs? It seems like a natural extension of skills.

    BIOA

    I am. I use a Garmin 60Cx for caching and for SAR. We've not integrated GPS with ham or the regular radios on our team (except for a test case several years ago) because of budget issues. The leadership would very much like to see it implemented, since they fully recognize the value it provides, and they've been trying to get a grant to fund it. Currently we're limited to using GPS tracks after callouts (mostly evidence searches in support of the PD) to document search areas.

    We've had search dogs integrated with the team and separate (teaming with CARDA) over the years. That's sort of its own topic, not specifically related to GPS/ham.

    PS - I should add that I'm not normally in these forums and I don't monitor this thread. Another cacher pointed it out to me.

  5. FWIW, I and two other experienced geocachers tried those two Wherigo caches yesterday, using a Colorado. I'd been warned by Touchstone about the problem with the Colorado on Western Canon beforehand but we gave it a shot anyway.

    Our results duplicated his exactly and were quite repeatable. We were unable to get past the first question on either.

    We ended up finding the final for Kirby tours Wilder Ranch only because I'd run it though the emulator the night before, and was familiar with the location.

    We all found it a very disappointing introduction to playing Wherigo. :blink:

  6. Site fall down go boom. I was trying to log my cache maintenance and it worked fine until it didn't. Most anything I try hasn't worked for maybe 10-15 minutes now.

    (insert random joke about GW6 logs overwhelming servers here)

  7. The best news to me is that Groundspeak seems to have taken up a more proactive attitude towards communicating changes and other information with its users. I can't speak for other users, but I'm very, very pleased about that.

    It also appears that real progress is being made not only with some of the longstanding site issues, but also with how those issues and others are addressed.

    I'm going to have to let my International Association of Curmudgeons membership expire if you keep this up. :D

  8. Any chance of a Q&A or FAQ regarding the Redesign?

    Example: Will Benchmarking as it currently exists be going away?

    If you guys want to ask questions like this feel free. I'll collect them all and present them to Jeremy to be answered (if the answer is... answer...able).

    Cool. Here are my questions:

    1. Will there be any changes to Benchmarking?

    2. Will there be any changes to Virtuals?

    3. Will we see any functionality added to the Friends feature, as has been alluded to by TPTB in the past?

    Those are the only ones I have off the top of my head, that I feel comfortable asking anyway. :D

  9. I count this as a step backwards as well. It's a loss of functionality that I used for a number of reasons, more than even g-o-cashers listed. I've noticed that the new Google maps seem to list *some* archived caches I have found, but not even all of those.

    I like the new Google maps overall, but I'd really like to be able to see archived caches again like I used to be able to do.

    I've pretty much lost faith in TPTB even acknowledging such requests based on recent experience, but FWIW consider this a request to see the functionality restored.

  10. On the off-topic topic.... Yeah, I was gonna say, it's sure not a "popular and accepted method" in this area!

    As to the flash mob events, while they don't interest me personally, I think they're a legit event. We've had a couple appear recently and at least one other is being planned, so I do kinda hope that people don't get carried away with having them every weekend or whatever.

  11. Today, getting to any page is typically taking me about 20-60 seconds to start getting the information back from the server.

    The google map took about three minutes to load up fully. When it did load, it's not working correctly: It's not reliably loading up caches; it's giving the you are zoomed out too far" message when I am not anywhere near zoomed out so far; and I've clicked on the cache I was interested in multiple times before it finally brought up the info balloon.

    I like the new google maps, but I prefer the maps to be *reliable* and work when I need them to work. Same goes for the rest of the site.

  12. Besides the site being intermittently very slow, now I get this when I try to log a find from today:

    Server Error in '/' Application.

    Runtime Error

    Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

    Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <configuration>

    <system.web>

    <customErrors mode="Off"/>

    </system.web>

    </configuration>

    Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <configuration>

    <system.web>

    <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>

    </system.web>

    </configuration>

    Has someone made a "Server Error in '/' Application" geocoin yet? Now *that* I would buy. <_<

  13. Same problem, Firefox 2.0.0.7 on MacOS.

    Maybe related to the new option just above it to select by a user-specified date range? That option *might* be useful to me so I appreciate it being added, but not if it's what is breaking the attribute selection.

  14. Took a second try before I could get past this when I tried to get into the site this morning:

  15. Are ya'll doin' maintenance or an upgrade...or something that's interfering with log in? Also get a message when going to gc.com about Google map key of some kind?

    I'm seeing that, plus when I try to click on a cache description on the geocaching.com/my page I get:

    Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at c3po.Groundspeak.com:8080

    As long as I'm here because I can't use the main site properly, I might as well add that I've been seeing my old nemesis, Server Error in '/' Application pretty regularly over the last couple of weeks.

  17. Um... I think Raine confirmed it pretty well. They aren't morons and understand the issue that people don't want to be spammed by default.

    Um... I'm just asking for a simple confirmation of my question, since what Raine said wasn't 100% clear on that point. I didn't suggest that they were morons, and this really has nothing to do with spam. And please, my question was directed to them, and not you, because you simply cannot answer it.

  18. Any options that we add to the Friends list feature will be "opt out of" for people so don't worry.

    -Raine

    So any new functionality added to the Friends feature will default to an opt-out setting? If so, while it doesn't answer my question, it does totally address my concerns, particularly from a Privacy standpoint.

    Will there be any confirmation of this from TPTB/Lackeys or can I stop checking this thread? <_<
