  1. I think this option is a good compromise (although my browser, Mac Safari , doesn't support hover well, I can switch one which does if I find I use the feature). If the print version's list got long (or could get long) perhaps a slightly reduced type face to 1) reduce the space occupied in the print-out and, 2) distinguish it from the other text of the cache desciption (maybe different color too)? Just thinking aloud...
  2. I'd love to meet other chachers on a hunt...Guess I need a Geo-hat or Windshield sticker (although my 'invoice box' with printouts, trinkets, pens, GPS and PDA has logos pasted all over it). How personal do you get? Screen names only? Or real person stuff like email and phone numbers depending on whether you like the fellow gamers?.....

  4. I put the date and time also, 'cause I've also run into caches that have apparently been visited recently (since they also logged the time). Haven't crossed paths with any local cachers yet, but I've been right behind one or two.... I haven't been terribly active with ~14 finds so far...so I'm still a relative newbie....especially compared with those with hundreds of finds Plus it's gotten hot here in the Houston area and if I go out caching durng the day my broken arm sweats and makes the cast itch!
  5. I watch one cache 'cause I left a trinket with sentimental value (to me) in it, hoping to see who picked it up....writing this, if I wasn't a newbie perhaps I should have made it a TB... I also watch my DNFs to see if it gets archived, reinstated, or was there and I just missed it!
  6. I had a similar experience; I posted a DNF on my second cache-hunt and the person who logged it after me sent me a note that, no, I wasn't crazy it really was near where I was looking (it was a micro), and, BTW did you know about this other one in the same park. I went back and found the both some time later. Another DNF I posted didn't get a note from the owner, but I was pretty sure I had found where it should have been and said so in my DNF (it was an easy one and with the hint pretty obvious); anyhow, the cache did get archived promptly with a note that the owner would check it. I was out introducing someone else to GC so it really helped to go back to the page and show him that something really had been there and this game wasn't just nuts! (I have a watch on the cache, but so far nothing new.....)

    Editing Post

I often have afterthoughts and go back and edit my posts (and I see others do much the same) - more recently 'cause a splint impaired my typing, although the semi-prmanent cast has has allowed me to have enough fingers to type again. The site notes when you've edited a post, and many like me add additional comments about their edits. I'd like to see a dialogue box to allow you one to add one's comments about the editing to the note the site posts with your edit...
  8. This thread has focused largely on Wheelchair accessibiliy. I want to weigh in here because I often cach with my buddy TLT, who is recovering from an illness and, being from the IL area, can not cope with the Gulf Coast TX heat. So we Appreciate GOOD virtual caches (let's not re-start that thread here ) and caches that don't involve much hiking or arduous terrain. Great (shady) Parks and intresting locations are the best for him We take supplies (water, wipes, ice) when we can, but we often cache on he spur of the moment becaue of his schdule... FWIW... Edited for broken arm typing, which is getting much better now that I have a real cast and not a splint and hence more use of my fingers.....
  9. Followup Comment/Question: I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, kinda midway between the WAAS satellites. I can only acqure one in the evenings when propagation is good (but not reliably). Does anyone have any information or links to information about the 'footprints' of the WAAS satellites?
  10. There are two WAAS satellites. One on each coast of the US: Sat # 35 is off the East coast and #47 is the West coast one. Edited for broken arm spelling....
  11. If you're looking for a cache, remember that he accuracy of the unit and the care the cache- hider took in determining the coordinates are also a factor to be added in....
  12. I do it for both the hunt and the location. I'm not into trading, so usally I just SL. A good hint (encrypted) is a real plus: My second find, the first with my own GPSr was in a lovely little park and I thought I was going nuts - the GPSr led me to an improbable place. Well, I decoded the hint and after a few more minutes found the micro. Being a newbie, I didn't comment on the coordinates, but later gamers did and it turned out they were off a bit. The owner later posted the updated coordintes. So, I got to see a great park and with the hint got a find in spite of the coordinates. Really gave me a boost as a newbie.
  13. Normally I receive my email notification of new caches in my area on Thursday or Friday; it's now Saturday and no email. Now, I'm not waiting to rush out to hunt, but I do enjoy looking at the new hides near me. So, does no email notification mean no new caches near me this week ? Or is the machinery just slow? Just curious. Sunday 6/13: Got it today, with the note! Thanks for feeding the hamsters and getting their treadmill back up to speed.....
  14. Has anyone noticed any performance differences when using NiMH batteries becasue of the lower (1.2V) voltage? I love the convenience of the 15-minute rechargeables and the life in powering my GPSr (although the sefl-discharge has to be kept in mind in storage). But I have the impression that my Meridian Gold takes much longer to initially acquire satellites when turned on when using NiMH as opposed to standard alkaline (1.5V) batteries - after that it its fine. Practiacally, it is just an inconvenience. Is that must my imagination, or does anyone else have some similar experience/facts/
  15. I've never done this but read about as a hobby - how about taking a rubbing of an interestng headstone? It would be kind of preservation, something to take with (besides swag) and might make a more interesting photo for the cache than just a pic of the headstone.
  16. Well, geocaching was free for my first find, since I used a borrowed GPS and hadn't subscribed to the site yet (oops! I used some gasoline...) Since then I've bought a GPSr, interface cable, (shareware) software, NMHi batteries and a charger to sustain my 'habit'. So personally, it wasn't free for me, but I've only invested some <$500 in the hobby (excluding ice, bottled water, gasoline, an invoice/clipboard to hold prnt-outs, my PDA and the GPSr). Personal investment, worth it to me. I'm still looking at a dash mount and accessory cable to power it in the car, but that can wait. The premium membership was primarily to support the cause, and the benefits, particularly downloading .LOC files to the GPS save me some input errors. And I enjoy the conveience of browsing the maps, zooming and panning, and IDing casches with a click. Haven't found pocket queries useful yet, but I'm new. For a mere $30 (and I'm retired, like it matters). And I renewed a friendship when I introduced him to the sport/hobby/whatever. To me it's an amazing twist on using technology in a novel way. BTW and OT, what's with the Froggie icons? History?
  17. I'm relatively new to GC; my expeirence agrees with these posts that you'll get within 20-30 ft. of the cache. I follow the compass arrow and distance until I reach the waypoint, then usually end up circling around a bit, with my GPS giving me several locations in the same general radius that average around a 'most likely' spot. Then I peel my eyes and try to think like sneaky cache-hider....
  18. kind of a homonym/pun on a real name (Dexter, not mine, heaven forbid, although I do tend to be kind of a techno-geek) and my initials....
