  1. A good one I haven't made it to yet that's kinda on the way is A drop in the bucket GC197RG. There's a couple of good Virtuals there, and a neat EarthCache that's right in town. They've had a big Rails to Trails project that's covered up with caches.
  2. I don't particularly like them. I usually won't do them if I'm not with another cacher.
  3. Yikes! For some reason I did not get a notification email for this cache. It looks like that was a good thing. I probably would've been too spooked to look if it got published around the time the other new ones Sunday night(went after a roadside one in town instead). I spent too much time yesterday morning looking for Gigger's other new one in town, so I probably would've skipped this one then too. It was dark on my way home last night, so the whole too spooky thing would've covered me again. I've been pretty lucky so far. I did attract enough attention at a stump on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere that a neighbor drove over to see what I was up to once. He was friendly, though. Sorry about your day. I've not had a lot of luck with caches along 63 like that. There's a cemetery surrounded by Federal Prison property that I've always thought would be a cool place for a cache, they even had a sign advertising plots available recently.
  4. I need you to put me in touch with this squirrel. I'm recruiting squirrels to help me with a certain geocache that's ~25 feet up in a tree. During testing, the squirrels I've found have no trouble climbing, no trouble chewing through rope, and no trouble bringing me the test container. The problem I'm having is finding a squirrel that can successfully use wire ties to reattach the container after I sign the log. I'm so close. It sounds like you found a squirrel that may be up to the task.
  5. I care. I care deeply. I am very concerned for the health of the various teams that have done these record runs. I'm afraid they may get repetitive-stress injuries from patting themselves on the back so much. Don't know about the back patting. However, I developed RMI in the right thumb part way through the trail from toggling the GPSr and further exacerbated the situation during the logging process. PITY PARTY PLEASE !!!!!!!!! BTW: My record still stands ... longest time from start to finish. Really ticked at the governing body because I've not been notified about my induction into " The Hall " LOL, LOL I believe Hall of Fame ballots are sent to GWAA(Geocaching Writers Association of America) members who have been members for at least 10 years. In order to be considered, a Geocacher must have completed 10 years of geocaching and been retired from the sport for 5 years. An exception can be made to the 5 year rule in the event of death, but the 10 years of service time rule would still apply. With that said, the first HOF class could potentially be in the year 2015.
  6. I heard that the Commissioner's office is considering adding an asterisk to any record in the Geocaching Recordbook that is suspected of using PEDs(Performance Enhancing Drops) to attain said records. It is unknown at this time how having an asterisk might affect future consideration for admission to the Geocaching Hall of Fame.
  7. I've never been much of a tree climber, although I definitely think it could be fun. I've been meaning to stop by there to at least have a look. It's funny, I was watching an episode of Billy the Exterminator this weekend and they were using a cherry picker at a hotel to dispose of some wasps. When he said something about being 50 feet off the ground, I thought, "hey, I only need to be 25 feet off the ground" and wished I could borrow it. Misco was at my work yesterday, and I thought about asking if they'd be interested in giving me a cherry picker lesson. They're just over the bridge from the park... the place with the huge crane with an American flag hanging from the top. It would be pretty funny to post a picture of me leisurely reaching out and grabbing the cache. Rabbit Hole Revenge haunted me. I lost count of how many times I went looking for that one(three times that I logged, probably at least three other times). I finally got an idea of a spot to check while looking and it still took me one more trip.
  8. I think they may be having a Send to GPS problem today. I had some weird stuff happen when I tried to send to my DeLorme PN-40. First, it pulled up the Magellan tab. Then when I clicked the DeLorme tab it had a Download button next to the step that checks the plugin. Usually it will tell me I have an outdated version if I do. When I click the Download button, it just refreshes that window.
  9. Well this is an interesting way to find out I haven't been getting emails from one of my accounts for the last week. I thought it was odd that no new caches have been published near me lately, oops. I'm sentimental when it comes to older caches too. For this one to inspire the creation of the $*^#& of a cache that is Rabbit Hole Revenge, I thought that this one had to be pretty special. So I was surprised when I found it without much trouble(for comparison, Bass could eat the way this one was when I found it for breakfast). When I found it, it was a plastic paintball container(not the Altoids box mentioned in the description), and the lid was busted off. The area looked like it was probably much different than when the cache was first placed. I put in a Needs Maintenance log but then I noticed the CO hadn't logged in for 5(now 6) years. I had some new Lock & Locks I hadn't found a use for yet, so I went ahead and replaced it and asked the reviewer to remove the Needs Maintenance flag. I never put it on my watchlist, but I kept an eye on it for awhile. Everything seemed good for 5 months or so. I noticed a string of DNFs, so I took a quick look for it when I was making one of my Rabbit Hole Revenge trips. I didn't have the coordinates in my GPSr at the time, but I was pretty sure it was gone. Then I later saw a couple of new finds logged on it. I lost track of it after that, but no one has found it since. I actually checked the cache page last week, and thought about pulling the trigger on a NA log. I definitely don't think I found it in its original spot, either that or damage had caused the original spot to not be as hidden as it once was. I replaced the container with the thought that since the last container seemed to have lasted 5 years, maybe a new one could last another 5 years. I'll go check the spot out and if I don't find it, I'll log a NA.
  10. Start the Geocaching app. Once the disclaimer disappears and the application menu comes up, press the Menu button. Depending on the model of phone, the Menu button can either be a hard button or a capacitive button at the bottom of your phone's touch screen. Once you find and press the Menu button, a list of options should come up, one of which is for Settings. Select that, and the application settings should be displayed. The first section of the Settings screen should say "Geocaching.com Account Info". Click on the text box next to "Username" and enter the username you use for geocaching.com. Then click on the text box next to "Password" and enter the password you use for geocaching.com. Underneath that is a button that says "Login". Click that to login. The next thing displayed on the settings screen is titled "Saved Field Notes". There is a button that says "Submit Saved Field Notes". It is grayed out if there are no pending field notes saved. You can use this to submit field notes if you try to enter a log and do not have data service at the time. The next section on the settings screen is titled "Search Filters". It contains the description "Choose Basic to show only traditional geocaches. Choose Advanced to show all types of geocaches." Make your selection in the combo box if you want Advanced or Basic. This section also has a description that says "Choose 'Hide Finds' to filter out the geocaches you have already found or placed (requires log in)." If you are logged in(completed the Geocacing.Com Account Info section which should now display the text "Logged in as " followed by your geocaching.com username) you can choose "Hide Finds" to only return caches which you have not found and do not own. The next section of the settings screen is titled Returned Results. You can select the number of caches you want the application to display at a time when you search for nearest geocaches. The next section is titled Units. You can choose "Miles/Ft" if you prefer distances to be displayed in miles and feet or "KM/Meters" if you prefer distances to be displayed as kilometers and meters. The next section is titled Initial Navigation Mode. You can choose "Compass Mode" if you want the compass to be displayed when navigating to a cache or "Map Mode" if you want the map view. You can switch from one to the other while navigating to the cache by again pressing the handy Menu button and choosing the corresponding option. The next section is Database Location. This allows you to set whether you want the database to be stored in internal memory or on the microSD card. The last section is titled Search for GPX files on the SD card. You can press this if you want to load caches from a GPX file you have stored on your microSD card. That's how you get to the settings menu and an overview of what the settings are. It probably would have taken you less time to press the Menu button and explore the options than it did for me to type it out. That's one of the cool things about Android. If you think there should be a setting for something, you can hit the Menu button on the phone and often get other options. Not everything has to be tied into the GUI like it does with those other phones that only have one button.
  11. I've logged 89 DNFs and 627 finds. I'm not as good about logging DNFs as I should be.
  12. I'm wearing my green Cache Attack t-shirt for the first time today. The dress code here is pretty loose because of the production environment. Any time we're on the floor we have to wear smocks so we might as well be comfortable. Until I started working here I always wore at least polo shirts and khakis. Now it's jeans and t-shirts. I'm scared that might change soon since we are now only allowed to wear our smocks on the floor and can no longer take them into the office area.
  13. Now I know where GZ is. I got out of work late Friday and did a drive-by just out of curiosity. It was already dark and the Y was closed(didn't realize they close early on Friday) so I didn't get close enough to find out what kind of climbing is involved. So now I know it's ~25 ft. up a tree. Very interesting.
  14. I use averaging on my PN-40 and let it take 150-200 readings. Then I'll walk away an navigate to the waypoint.
  15. Release notes? Why that would ruin what surprises are inside.
  16. I'm guessing the finding a cache on 10/10/10 thing that would do something to your profile that Jeremy mentioned is going to be a Souvenir.
  17. Looks like all of those links are sad faces now. No forum, no Get Satisfaction, I think I may try using smoke signals for app bug reports now. That likely won't be more effective, but fire is cool.
  18. I hope the one at the Pier in Fort Myers Beach, Florida stays active. That's a sweet spot.
  19. I'd like to come, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it down there that weekend. Regrettably I haven't been in Kentucky since early January, which I'm pretty sure sets the record for longest amount of time I've gone without at least visiting since I was born. It's probably been a good 20 years since I've been in Audubon Park(pass by a lot, though). Thanks for all of the Union County caches you've put out. I was a little disappointed I didn't run into you at Moonshine last weekend.
  20. One time I was out trying to be FTF on a cache around sheds at Lowes and saw a family I thought was looking at buying a shed... until I noticed that the Dad had a GPS. I had my daughter with me, and I told her we needed to pretend to be interested in buying a shed(hoping that we might spot the cache first). They figured out that we were doing what they were doing and gave us a hint when they found it. The other two times(also FTF attempts), I joined in the search once I was sure they were caching. The coordinates were way off for one, so we both ended up empty handed.
  21. 230 It turns out that I haven't found 76 of them. I thought the closest unfound were mostly puzzles and ones I've given up on or don't want to find. Looks like there are a few I just haven't gone after yet.
  22. At least the CO acknowledged that the cache had not been placed yet. You found it first. Don't worry about what your friend does in his profile. I was FTF on a couple of caches a couple of days before a group of people came through and grabbed a bunch of new caches. They were FTF on a few, but I noticed that one cacher claimed to be FTF on the ones I found before them. That's the beauty of the unofficialness of FTF.
  23. I already have a PN-40 and I'm considering getting a PN-60. If I were in your shoes, I'd go with the PN-60. They've completely redone the power architecture for it which appears to have given it much better battery life and stability.
  24. Let us know how it turns out--lots of caches on the island!!! I had a great time. I didn't get to go after every cache I wanted to(like the Big John virtual in Cape Coral), but I found lots of neat spots I didn't see the last time I visited. I even saw alligators in the wild near Everglades City. I was bummed because the last day of my vacation came too fast, and I hadn't made it to the lighthouse or got to check out the area around/under the Causeway... so I got up early that last day and hit up both.
