  1. Or hold out a little bit for the rumored Garmin StreetPilot 7200 GPS.
  2. I realized not too long ago that I was carrying around too many gadgets. Cellphone, PDA, handheld GPS for geocaching, handheld GPS for the airplane, mp3 player, remote control to laptop for presentations, etc. I've managed to consolidate considerably. I now have a Treo 650 which is my cellphone, PDA, and MP3 player by itself. Through Bluetooth connections it also connects to my DeLorme Blue Logger to provide GPS support for geocaching and flying as well as the remote for my laptop presentations. Six or more devices consolidated into two small devices. Although it might be expensive to switch to those types of devices, I sure saved a ton of money in the end when I sold all of my old gadgets on eBay. Something similar might be a route you want to look at taking.
  3. Except if you are running Linux, Mac, etc.
  4. Depends on how many devices you can combine into one. I used to have a GPS for geocaching, a GPS for the airplane, a cellular phone, a PDA, an mp3 player for the car, and a wireless remote for computer presentations. I've consolidated those six devices into a Treo 650 with a Bluetooth GPS. (Although I still have an iPod ) I put the old devices up on eBay and I've saved a ton of cash and lightened the load of my pant pockets.
  5. Although more of a workaround than a real solution, after changing the category to 'Found' I prepend the name of the cache with the current time. Then when looking at the 'Found' category I can sort by Name and they will come out in order of time found. Again, not really a solution, but it is how I'm doing it in CacheMate.
  6. And there is also this page which talks about compatibility of various GPS units with different cables. (USB, serial, serial to usb, etc).
  7. True, and the same would apply if the route travelled over any other (non-freeway) one way streets. However from a programming perspective when the user asked for a route to be reversed, the first thing I'd say would be "if there are any one way streets/freeways along the current route, then recalculate everything, else (no one way streets/freeways) just reverse the order of what we already have rather than recalculate everything."
  8. Thanks for the comments, Don. My speed complaints were not regarding the PC side of the software, but the handheld side of the software. The speed of the software running on the PC (to generate the routes, create maps, etc) was adequate. The speed of routing and locating addresses on the handheld however, took a long time.
  9. Even if it had been in the water or gotten wet the Meridian is supposed to be waterproof certified to IEC-529 IPX7 standards. Since it is so new I'd take it back to where you purchased it and ask them for assistance/exchange. For condensation to form you either need to allow water to get in or allow most air inside of it to cool and condense... Neither of which should happen in a waterproof device.
  10. Just this morning I wrote an extensive review of DeLorme Street Atlas 2006 Handheld if anyone cares to read it.
  11. You can almost do this with the HH version. Create and save the map as you normally would. Then open the maps folder and copy it to your SD card. DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2006 Handheld Review.
  12. Which version of SA are you looking for information on? The handheld or laptop version?
  13. There is this page on GPSy that talks about the different adapters that work with different GPS devices for Mac.
  14. GPSy is one of the few mac specific GIS/GPS sites I have come across. They also have a page specific to finding Mac GPS cables and adapters.
  15. The "MapSource City Navigator NT North America" is listed in the "contents" list for the item so I'm assuming that it included as a CD. However, all of the data from MapSource City Navigator does come already loaded into the unit. Since the 2720 does come with a USB connector I can only imagine that it is for downloading custom data (such as possibly waypoints) into the unit. You can find more info too at this Garmin StreetPilot 2270 page.
  16. If you have used the Garmin in the past, then I'd go with that route since you are already familiar with the operation. Even if you don't get the same model the system will be similar. There are not many differences between the explorist 500 and 600, I know the 600 has a barometric pressure altimeter, barometer, thermometer, and a 3-axis electronic compass which I don't think the 500 has.
  17. They both used the same data source. In both maps I can see the Shenendoah further upstream. With Virtual Earth it "started" closer to where it should have been than Google. Of course it is there on the satellite maps so let's hope that it is just a data error and the aliens didn't really take it!
  18. Great. Let us know how you make out. I had a laser printer shipped to me last month that came with the wrong CD installer... to make things worse the installer CD I was sent wasn't even for the same BRAND printer I had purchased. hmmmmm.... Keep us posted and happy mapping.
  19. I'll answer too for my config in case it helps any... 1) No. 2) No, it just says 'Removable Disk'. 3) It shows 'eUSB Secure Digital USB Device' 4) No, just the Microsoft driver in my windows directory then system23\DRIVERS\disk.sys
  20. What did Lowrance say about the situation? It sounds to me like it might be a conflict with some sort of other hardware driver you might have installed. (Even though the card reader works fine standalone.) Is that the exact error message you received?
  21. Except for rising fuel costs, geocaching is pretty cheap as far as many hobbies go.
  22. If you need any beta testers let me know. Not just because I'd like to see the software but I've been a beta tester for many of the major mac software vendors and my former job was primarily to regression test software. I might also be able to get access to a variety of GPS receivers to test. (see sig).
  23. Good point! That could be a good part of the difference seeing a AA battery is about once once each. Absolutely!
  24. Interesting, thanks. The owners manual says it is 7.6 ounces but is probably more dated than the website.
  25. That is odd... the information I read says it weighs 7.6 ounces.
