  1. Because not everyone gets around to logging their caches the day they find it? I would hate to take a 5 mile hike to find a currently active cache, just to find that when I get home, I can't log it because it was archived between when I found it and when I logged it. But your log date would still be on or before the archive date and thus would still be allowed. Even if 2 years later you got around to logging it. When it comes to reasons, like physical objects, inability to see does not mean it isn't there, it means a person can't see it. There are many reasons a geocache gets archived. Reviewers do it for maintenance reasons, geocachers do it for their reason, including geocide. They 'should' get picked up, but they don't. Tha'ts life. Adjust, work with it, do the right things.
  2. A screen protector and my pocket have always been enough to protect the bulky beast. Something like that wrapped around it and I might as well be arrying a net-book!
  3. Typically you will not need to put anything there. If there is a special request or other info, the reviewer may see it. For example, if you are a long way from home, you may need to include a maintenance plan so the reviewer knows that the cache will not be ignored once you go home. It may also have a request like "please do not publish until Friday". But for the most part, you can leave it blank.
  4. The extra smiley they get directly from you is the one on your face. Otherwise, they would need to log two finds on one geocache.
  5. The container does not belong to Groundspeak. Meanwhile... this thread is better in a more general forum.
  6. Even though all the components have been replaced, the fact that you consider it to be your Great Great Grandfather's axe is what folks are trying to preserve. It's not the item people want, it's the sentiment.
  7. I seem to have forgot the magic number... How many non-topic related posts need to occur before the thread gets closed?
  8. Wow, that was a quick response ! Thank You. So the "icon" on my statistics page for Locationless/Reverse Cache must still appear for those ones that were completed long time ago ? Thanks again for your help Yes, they were moved off the geocaching part of the site years ago. The move made sense to most people as geocaches are based on finding a location while locationless caches were was based on item and reporting the location.
  9. Based on other forum posts, it looks like you have the Magellan GC? I believe that will track them as you mark the 'found' and then you can upload the Found_Cache.txt file to the Geocaching site for logging. A paper notepad is also helpful if you don't want to keep notes on the GPS. (disclaimer: It's been a couple years since I played with this model, so I may be mising a few details.)
  10. Sorry, but Locationless Caches are no longer available for logging. They are strictly on the Waymarking site and do not carry over to geocaching.
  11. Be sure to uncheck the "any container size" or you will get them all.
  12. Thanks for covering for me guys. I was away reviewing caches for the 2/29 festivities.
  13. I realize that I look at this from the reviewer aspect, where we deal with caches owned by inactive cachers quite frequently, as opposed to looking at it from the perspective of forum regulars talking to forum regulars. I am not able to use the assumption that everyone I talk to is listening. When posting in the forums, everybody knows they will be responded to by people that will claim they maintian their caches. Probably true, but I believe the bigger issue is the people not in the forums. How can you tell on the cache page if the cache owner is paying attention? Unless you see recent log on the cache, you will need to take the extra step. Yes, I know 'you' will, but it's the other 99.9% of the geocaching community we are concerned with as well. So, as a person that wants to see it fixed, I will say to post a NA log if you think it needs to be resolved, otherwise it will likely continue to fester. Sorry if I am not as sensitive to the cache owner's feelings.
  14. - Lid broken and container is filled with water and cache owner non-responsive. - 4 DNFs after 35 consecutive finds - 3 of last 10 cachers were yelled at by an unreasonable neighber. - The cache is "on" a no tresspassing sign. - The traditional cache coordiantes are off by 65 feet. etc etc
  15. The reviewer tools don't work (i.e. detect nearby puzzle finals) until after the cache listing is submitted. This is why we ask that cache pages are submitted before/during inquiries be made. General questions get general answers. Sure, it is possible that you can't place a cache anywhere near that spot, but you can re-use the page in a different spot.
  16. A nice cheap little GPS will work internationally without the need of cell service. You will also find it useful in back country or on lonely highways. Check the GPS Yardsale forum to see if there is a used one that will fit your needs. There is life outside the range cell towers.
  17. You mention reviewers that might archive too fast. Is that an actual problem? Don't reviewers disable the cache for 30 days in a situation like this? If the owner hasn't at least started a dialogue with a reviewer within that time frame, I would say the cache should be archived. No, the most common issue is that there are 5-6 DNF's on a 2/2 cache and 3 Needs Maintenance and no action has been taken. There are time where there are 70 sequential finds then a rash of 8-12 DNF/NM logs and a reviewer will check and see the CO hasn't logged in for 6 months and goes straight to archival. One must remeber that archival does not have to be permanant. If the situation warrants, it can be brought back to life.
  18. Actually, NM is typicaly taken as "log book full" or "lid broken". Typically the cache is in place While the literal translation for NA is that it needs archived, it is nearly always taken to mean "likely missing" and Needs Disbaled, or the more extreme "I was shot at by the new property owner and nobody should be here". Until Groundspeak adds something in between, the NA log should be used in the cases where the geocacher is wastin their time going to seek the cache.
  19. This topic fits better in Geocaching Topics - I will move it there.
  20. Having used the Montana for awhile, I find it difficult going back to the Oregon. The Montana isn't so much heavy as it's the size of a small cabin cruiser. Recharging batteries while in the dash mount is awesome. I haven't had to use the 3 AA's (back up plan) in months. I can see the screen without reading glasses. I can't do a Wherigo... (or not sure where/how.)
  21. SInce the cache is missing, I would suggest the NA log. This means you have no less than two people informed of the issue that has the authority to act on it. By only posting a NM log, then you reduce the chances of positive action by a half. Most reviewers will not archive the cache, but to disable it and give the CO a chance to fix. Mitigating circumstances that ould sway this: Cache Owner ins known to be responsive... or non responsive or a Local reviewer that would archive too fast.
  22. Tool store (Harbor Freight, etc) or an autoparts store for the longer stem and more powerful magnet. I seem to recall seeing a small set with the small magnet and an matching extendable mirror for cheap good price.
  23. How about a road trip to Ogden? They are having an event there.
  24. Did you mark them as 'collectable'?
