    Milestones

Congrats to Henzz & The Pooks
  2. An established cacher with a new profile... Yip, it was bound to happen eventually, as the next generation of cachers grow up. Most of you know my son from various events, or on the trail, but now he is no longer "the other half" of MnCo and has started logging his own finds under the name "eagleise". Of course we have done a lot of road trips and hikes together and he would now like to retroactively log the caches which we have done together. But before he does, I wanted to do this post so that most of the cachers concerned would know who this "new" cacher is that just started posting logs with old dates and don't think something underhanded is going on. Based on previous discussions along these lines, I'm assuming the general community will not have an issue with this under these circumstances, but if there is anyone that would prefer that he not log their caches without revisiting them, then please let me know.
  3. Great, we look forward to seeing the event notice.
  4. It seems that caches are now "reviewed by the community" before being published.
  5. All wheel mice, irrespective of age, have this function. Also, unless you have a mouse with some unique functions and or buttons, there is usually no need to run a special drive for it. XP and up will have suitable drivers built in. Off hand, the only thing I can think of is that either the wheel button on your mouse is broken, or at some point its function has been changed from the default and or left blank. An alternate method is to left click the link, while holding the Ctrl to open in a new Tab, and the Shift key to open in a new Window.
  6. I'm sensing a personal experience But I do agree that maybe there should be a system of thumbs up/down. Some may like it, some may not, but a majority will rule out one way or the other in the end.
  7. Pressing the wheel botton on your mouse will open a link in a new tab.
  8. Not sure if they have been brought up already, but I skimmed through all the posts and didn't see anything. There seems to be a misscalculation with the "favorites" point system. At a 10:1 ratio, you should get a favorite point on every 10th cache and should therefore be 10% of your finds, but at 600 finds, I had 61 points instead of 60 and now at 609 its saying I'll get another point in 2 caches. But surely I should get a point at 610 and have 61 points??
  9. Why not just use existing English instead of trying to come up with something new... I favour this cache I favoured that cache This is one of my favourite caches
  10. Good luck on your SS mission. I trust you'll be dipping my racer and taking lots of photos for the logs along the way
  11. True, but its the other things you can control, like ensuring you visit/dip the TB at every cache (some people forget) and uploading a photo for every cache you visit/dip which add the points. Then there is the ability to control who else has it, for example handing it off to a cache-buddy to take it on a trip, clock up some distance points and then return it to you. Its funny how these things happen. Just goes to show that you should never loose hope for a lost bug. I'll never forget one I picked up about a year ago. It had been picked up 4 years earlier and then disappeared into the bottom of an infrequent cachers bag. 4 years later it tuned up in a nearby cache where I retrieved it. Unfortunately a short time later it ended up an a cache which was subsequently muggled, but hey, you never know. It may turn up again
  12. Without going and reading through the entire TOC/TOU as I undertand it, the cacher retains intellectual copyright of the cache but grants GC unrestricted use of the details, but as far as I'm aware it does not say "exclusive" use. So you can use the information to submit the cache to other caching sites. I don't know that you'll see any CO suing Garmin. Garmin will simply say its a different site and therefore, first come first serve. I suspect though, that once the novelty wares off, there may be a small nucleus of people using OC (as with other cache sites) but for the vast majority of us, we'll simply forget about it and continue on with GC.
  13. If you log out and log back in again you will see your draft caches waiting for editing. The trick here is to upload a GPX 1.0 file as they do not currently support GPX 1.1. Then logout and log back in as suggested.
  14. It is unfortunate, and the exception rather than the rule that the end of multi so far away would catch you out like that. Generally speaking though, if you have not already done the nearby cache, especially multies and puzzles, in an are you want to hide, then I've found a little research can go a long way. Contact the reviewer with your proposed final coordinates and ask if there are any collisions. He can say yes or no without giving anything away about other caches. You can also try contacting the owner of a nearby cache that you suspect might have a final or physical waypoint that will clash with your cache. Give them an approximate area and see if they will give you some idea of whether it will be a potential issue or not. That said, this proposed cache sounds interesting and of some historic value. Is there no way you can move the final a little so it does not collide with another cache and then say something like "100m down the road you will find xyz". Or maybe have the final stage as a virtual waypoint at these coordinates, and point out that this is where you wanted the cache to be. Just my 2c worth. Hope to see the cache soon.
  15. I'm not sure if this was meant to be, but it certainly sounded unnecessarily sarcastic This guy has done quite a few of my caches recently and I for one appreciate the effort, albeit in broken English, that he has at least made an effort to include an English version of his log. By the looks of it, its a direct translation from the German text using Google Translate, and its a lot better than Babel comes up with, in terms of making sense
  16. Looks like it does pay to hold on to your own bug
  17. You can purchase TB's (assuming all the racers have not bought up all the stock ) from SA Geo Shop. If you are prepared to pay a bit extra on postage, you can have the tags within a day or two. Just email W@lly to confirm your order and he'll send them off to you. In the meantime, prepare your bug(s) and one the tags arrive, rush off to your nearest event (see the list here). To keep up to date of events, as with the publication caches and a range of other things, you need to be a Premium Member. Once you have that, on the right hand side of your profile page, you will find a link under premium features to "Set Up Notifications".
  18. aaar, come on... now I'm totally intrigued
  19. This question is indeed just about the only reason I've signed up. That, and to reserve my username. But I ran into problems uploading all my caches as a GPX file. OC tells me its done but I can't see them. Have emailed OC about the problem. Have yet to get a reply.
  20. I suspect you are correct. In which case I can understand the need for less of a praising log, but poor form to log what could clearly be seen as a FTF, if they helped create the cache
  21. Just a quick reminder for those using the tb-run lists to keep an eye on the competition between updates to the official score board We now have 7 racers that have gone International and subsequently been moved to the International Category listing. 2011 Great SA TB Race - Local Racers 2001 Great SA TB Race - International Racers Note: Some racers are using the tb-run gadgets to show their distance ranking. If you have moved to the international race list, you will need to update the gadget on your tb page. Just add a 2 to the end of the race name in the link. .
  22. I might have been more inclined to stick with the anywhere outside South Africa rule, but exclude Lesotho and Swaziland from that rule for obvious reasons. Or maybe go as far as excluding Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique as being international, simply because it is quite possible and easy, to drive into one of these and place a cache/TB. My only concern about sub equatorial is that places like Nairobi are more often likely to be visited, for business or pleasure, from down here and a return trip & dip would clock up over 8000kms for a TB while not loosing its local race status. Just my 2c worth.
  23. Can't say I'm terribly impressed. 4 of the 5 times I tried to visit the site in the last 15 minutes it came up with an error. On the one occasion it did load, it crashed doing a search.
  24. That's what I think too! I feel sad to scrap the idea of 10 temporary hides to celebrate 10 years and as indicated above I suggested a cache to commemorate the 10 years. I thought that, with a bit of help from other cachers (quite a few have offered help) 10 unpublished caches would be MUCH easier to administer and is asking far less of those involved. Its a pity that I cant do it all alone, would if I could! If I could just toss a few cents in here. Those that attended the 10 Years event in Villiersdorp will recall that a similar temporary multicache was done to provide a little extra fun to the event, which everyone really enjoyed and as far as I know, no one felt done in because they could not log them. I think the idea of a ten cache fun event, incorporating 10 unpublished caches around the reservoir is great and in reality it could not support 10 published caches anyway because it's too small.
