  1. Thanks for the help, I think I got it! Now, instead of finding a cache in Hawaii, I can find a lot of caches in Hawaii!
  2. I've made sure that there were absolutely no GPX files on the unit every time I try to solve this. When it's absolutely clear, I save a Pocket Query and boom, "memory full." Waypoints, I'm not so sure about. The only time I've used them were to mark my own placed caches, and I certainly haven't placed 1000 caches! I've deleted all of my named waypoints through the waypoint manager, but I'm still left with a long list of random numbered waypoints (something like PK12LGTE38), all marked with a P symbol on the map. I don't know whether or not I should delete those, because they apparently came with the GPSr. I do use a Mac, could you clarify on that? "The MACs store the trash on the unit" is rather odd (as in, why in it's right mind would it do that ), do I just empty the trash bin on my desktop, problem solved? "What firmware are you using?" I'm going to be honest with you, terms like that go right over my head. You'd think I'd learn something after so much time on computers, GPSrs, and the like, but...
  3. I've been having an extremely annoying problem with my Garmin Oregon 400t for several months now, and it seems I can never get a straight answer on how to fix it. If I save two or more Pocket Queries onto my GPSr, my GPSr will state "memory full" when turned on, and none of the caches will show up. I was under the impression that Pocket Queries allowed a GPSr to have a large number of caches loaded on the device, but I can barely cover the area of my town! I'm going to Hawaii soon, and would like to have more than half an island's worth of caches loaded into my GPSr. I've even tried inserting a memory card, but it made absolutely no difference! Do I have to go through some process of "recognizing the card" somehow? I'd appreciate any fixes soon, as I leave tomorrow and didn't expect the memory card to fail!
  4. Whoa! This was filmed in Gig Harbor?! Now I have to watch the whole movie, see If I recognize anything. I've lived here for a loooong time. I didn't recognize anything in the clip, I didn't realize there was a waterfall around here...
  5. One of my favorite caches was Paul Bunyan's Menacing Micro (GC1F0MF). Very cool.
  6. Just a few minutes ago a news report about geocaching and people destroying caches aired, quoting that very website. Took me by surprise.
  7. That was my favorite cache series! Found a few after an event, loved signing "menacing micro" with the huge pencil! As for my weird caches, this cache of mine and the surrounding area was obliterated by a wood chipper. (I named it Ultimate Geocache back when I thought a stump was original ) Said cache's page. The funny story is, I was new to caching and was using a boat GPS. On my way to place it, I ran into a cacher looking for my other cache in the same park. I sheepishly tried to skirt around him with this stump behind my back, but he saw me. When he asked what I was doing, it was pretty hard to hide that I was the cache owner placing another cache. I didn't know about the 500 feet rule, so he kindly walked me 500 feet out to this nice patch of trees with a view of the pond and marked the coordinates. He then went back to my other cache while I hid the stump. An hour later (I wanted it to blend in perfectly ) I walked back down the hill and found two more cachers at my cache! I handed them the paper I wrote the coordinates on and said "have at it!" Then there's This one. I still need to find a building that will give me permission to place it. I have a few other unique ideas, I just need to build the containers and find a hiding spot.
  8. I still don't understand how you all are able to fill your GPSrs with so many pocket queries. It only takes two queries to completely fill up my Oregon 400t's memory. How the heck do you guys get 20?!
  9. Instructables has some great mini survival kit guides. I've been a member for such a long time, that I don't know what the site looks like to nonmembers anymore. There have been so many changes! I hope you can still view this link. Not sure if you will be able to view all steps and images on one page, though. It will probably have ads. Everything was free for a few years, but then the economy hit the site pretty hard. Instructables: Mini survival kits
  10. It's getting harder to find new places to hide caches...
  11. Apparently... as there is NO WAY a single PQ could 'fill up your memory', even on the cheapest Oregon or Dakota unit. They are only a few megabytes and the unit has hundreds of MB. You could store 100 PQs and be fine (though the unit can only ever show you 2000 caches) What do you mean by 'filled up all of my memory'? What is telling you this? You must have other things on the Oregon SD card filling up the space. Well, I'm not sure if it's one or two queries. One seems to work, but I'd place a second PQ, such as the Seattle area, into the GPS, and the GPS would say "Memory Full" when turned on. After it loaded, none of the caches would show on the map and the "find a cache" list would say "no caches," even though there are two PQ .GPX files in the .GPX folder. I did recently figure out how to place images into the GPS, so there are three pictures of my dog in there. Is that taking up all the memory? The "memory full" error sounds like one that was fixed with a firmware update long ago, have you ran the web updater the make sure you have the latest firmware version. If it really is a "memory full" error you can always place the gpx files on the micro sd card, just make sure to place them in the right directory, such as: D:\garmin\gpx Your oregon should be able to hold at least 4 PQ (set at 500 caches each), which would take you to the 2000 geocache limit. I didn't know there were firmware updates. Is this it: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4397

  13. It is well documented that the Oregon will hold 2000 caches but only 200 GPX files. If you load caches one at a time via Send to GPS, you will hit the 200 file limit. I tried running a pocket query today, didn't realize they filled up the memory so fast. I deleted all of the old .gpx files to make room for the single query .gpx file, but that single file filled up all of my memory. It's a neat feature, but 500 caches in a twelve mile radius (seems 100 doesn't work) isn't a lot to work with, it only covers half of Tacoma. I was hoping I could have more than one query fit onto my GPS so I could cover a larger area. If one query .gpx file fills up my memory, I don't think it can handle 200. Plus, I had to delete all of my found caches, and now I don't get to see all of those open treasure chests. Any help? Am I doing something wrong?
  14. Here are some planet themed caches I spray painted. I've only hidden the 50 cache, though. The pictures don't do them justice, too much glare.
  15. I made a night cache, but it hardly gets any visits. It's called "The Guiding Fire." I spray painted a trail of flames onto trees with glow in the dark paint. It's invisible in the daylight, but glows when a UV light is shined on it. The posted coordinates lead you to an ammo can with handheld UV lights and spare batteries. From there, you search for the flames which lead you to the glowing cache. I have no idea what condition the cache is in, though. I haven't had a chance to go out late at night and check.
  16. Woo! Deleting the 52 Arizona caches worked! Thank you all so much for helping me so fast! Much appreciated!
  17. Cool, thanks! Looking at the files on my computer (which I didn't know you could do), the caches I downloaded are in the GPS, just not showing up on the map and list. I'll delete the Arizona caches and tell you all what happened, but it will be a while seeing as I have to search each GC code to be sure I'm not deleting something I want to keep. Thanks for all the help! Wow, that was fast!
  18. I rarely use this method to get caches on my Oregon. Have you tried doing a pocket queary? so much faster than selecting certain caches. I'm still new to the whole "pocket queary" thing, and I don't understand how it works.
  19. The unit will only hold 200 of the caches that you "send to gps" from GS. How many do you have on there? You could delete some of the old ones. Oh, that could explain it. I have a ton of caches from Arizona (1000+ miles away) on the GPS, but I can't figure out how to delete them. Like I said, I misplaced the manual! Thanks!
  20. I've been having a problem with my Garmin Oregon 400t recently. I go onto the cache page on Geocaching.com and click "send to GPS," then "Find Device" and "Write Now," and get the message, as always, "GPS information saved successfully." Problem is, as soon as unplug the GPS (safely disconnecting, BTW), the caches disappear from the GPS! They don't show up in either the map or the list of geocaches! I've owned this GPS since last December, and this has never happened before! It started about a week or so ago, I had a whole line up of caches downloaded in another town, but when I got there, the caches weren't on the GPS! Ever since, I've just hand entered the coordinates, but I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow and would really like to be able to download the local caches. Also I seem to have misplaced the manual. Edit: Fixed! Thanks!
  21. http://www.instructables.com/id/How_to_Bui...ty_Camera_Safe/ http://www.instructables.com/id/The_Ultimate_Geocache/ Still need to find a good place for the first link, the second link went toe to toe with a wood chipper, and lost. Also, I named the second link "Ultimate Geocache" because, at the time, I thought it was an original idea.
