  1. Does anybody know af a map website where you can click on a map (preferably a topo) and it will show the exact coordinates in degrees/minutes?
  2. Can someone enlighten me as to why there is the "discover" feature for logging travel bugs now? What is the point??? I don't care if someone saw my travel bug, it is useless information, if they don't actually move it....All these "discoveries" are clogging up my in box! Does anybody else find this somewhat irritating?
  3. Yes, I am like you, favoring the more expensive ones. Did a lot of research and decided on the Davis Vantage Pro 2 which the best price I found online was around $400.00. I really wanted one that connects the data to the Internet, which (of course) requires that you buy a data transfer module for another 100 bucks or so.
  4. I know this is a little geeky, but I am setting up a weather station in my back yard (on non-caching days). The wind direction sensor needs to be aligned exactly to true north. I was wondering if I can use a feature on my GPSr to determine true north? I have a Garmin eTrex Legend. Thanks!
  5. I am Pinster56 and the owner of the now infamous cache in question. I have been having a good laugh at all the postings so far. NuttySquirrel is the first to have the Moonbat problem at this cache. If she did call the cops because of his caching presence there, I do understand his reaction, although it should be viewed more from the humorous side. Each week in our local paper my wife and I enjoy reading to each other the police logs in regards to our local "moonbat" calls. Every week it's something like, "Police receive call of man acting suspicious in yard at xx Street. Police report the man was the homeowner mowing his lawn." Always source of entertainment, but I do feel sorry for the poor cops who have to waste their time on these ridiculous calls. Much ado about nothing, IMHO. Kinda like Arlo Guthrie in the song "Alice's Restaurant" when he had to sit on the bench with the mother rapers and father rapers all because of throwing the garbage.... For anyone who has done this cache, it is actually a three stage multi, and it really surprises me is that it hasn't been the first two stages that should bring out the cops, since both stages require the cacher to poke around for clues in the local graveyard behind a church! While caching myself, I have had only one "inquiry", which was by a burly security guard while looking for a micro hidden at a bus station. After I explained my strange behavior, he joined in the hunt and we looked for it together. Turned out to be a good time.
  6. I would like to put one of my caches up for adoption. What is the procedure to do this? Thanks!
  7. I would recommend Delorme Street Atlas USA. It has a very easy to use circle drawing tool. You just click the center point, enter the radius in the box at the bottom and click done. You can also enter the center point as coordinates. It is very accurate coordinate wise, simply hover the mouse over the intersection and read the coordinates on the side panel. However, I would not recommend trusting the roads and map POI's to be used as landmarks. Some are off quite a bit. Sounds good, but is this something I have to buy? I don't want to invest in new sofware just to find one cache.
  8. I want to find a cache that requires finding a couple of waypoints, then plotting a circle with a radius where the intersection of the two radii give the next waypoint. I downloaded a trial version of ExpertGPS but I cannot figure out how to plot a radius with it. Anybody out there know how to do this?
  9. At my company's conference we are handing out Magellan eXplorist 210's as a free gift to the attendees. A lot of them will not be familiar with geocaching, so I wanted to print up something about geocaching to give out with the GPSr's. Can anybody recommend a good handout, maybe on a PDF, that I could use?
  10. One of my caches has been reported as being a bit off on the coordinates. A couple of thoughtful cachers added more accurate coordinates to their logs. When I went to edit my cache with the better coords, it wouldn't let me. It just has a link that says, "You can modify your cache coordinates via a log entry". That's no good. Lots of folks arent going to notice the coords in the logs and will just download the inaccurate one at the top of the page. How can I fix this? Thete must be a simple way that I am overlooking.
  11. I doubt this gadget would work on the nymph deer ticks. One day I thought I had an itchy mosquito bite with a TINY black dot in the center. It was a deer tick. It is as small as the period at the end of this sentence. Could only tell it was a tick with a magnifying lens. Went for a swim in the ocean and it fell off.
  12. I just found an old Palm Vx that has been gathering dust in a drawer. Wondering if it is worth the hassle to use it for caching....Can someone give a link or two to a good tutorial on how to get started in paperless caching?
  13. Seeing a hawk eating a pizza on the busiest street in Boston while searching for an urban cache does it for me!
  14. My company is having a conference in Las Vegas in the fall (we manufacture infrared cameras for thermographers). I work in the Marketing department, and we are giving away GPSr's as a promotion for attending. Since I am obsessed with caching (and have hidden 20 caches myself) I was thinking of setting up a cache on the hotel property and have the attendees try out their new GPSr's there! We would put some sort of a FTF prize only in it, I am thinking. Perhaps people could collect number clues around the hotel that translate into coordinates...or maybe that would be too complicated...Has anybody out there done a similar idea in a similar situation? I could use some input. Thanks!
  15. Is there any way if determining the number of finds my own caches have? I would like to see which ones get the most traffic.
  16. Wow--this sounds really cool...and original too. Can't wait to see how this works. I'm in!
  17. This has been my point exactly from the beginning. Agree 100%.
  18. Yes its essentially the same situation as with Groundspeak. I am just saying don't be hypocritical about criticizing people who use Groundspeak without being a premium member and turn around and use Yahoo! search engine every day without subscribing to their pay services.
  19. So if membership so inexpensive, and its not about making exclusive caches why have a pay membership at all? Or why not make EVERYONE pay? Then there would be no issues abou exclusivity.
  20. That's a hoot! Thanks for the laugh! Doesn't the term "Members Only" define exclusivity?
  21. Groundspeak makes money from the banner ads, and from the Travel Bugs and caching gear you buy, so everybody contributes in some way to Groundspeak, not just premium members. Do you look up stuff on Yahoo! or Google? I bet you don't get out the credit card every time you use their search engine.
  22. exactly, so when you pay for premium TV, you get channel that others don't get. Once you own a TV, shoudn't all channels be available to everybody without paying for premium TV? Premium TV channels were created to be paid for, just like buying software programs, or a million other things. The reason MOC's were created is to specifically exclude certain people from accessing them. You may be excluded from watching HBO because you can't afford it, but HBO wasn't created specifically to exclude viewers. HBO was created to generate revenue. MOC's are created to generate exclusivity.
