  1. Thanks much for the term - I knew it was some kind of parasite. Sorry for the slightly off topic post
  2. While looking for FV0855 (which I didn't find) I did see this. Out of the corner of my eye I saw berries on a tree - I thought that was curious till I looked closer and then it just looked strange . Any help on what this might be?
  3. Use this Benchmark Viewer and see if you can find the one you found it will tell you the Permanent IDentifier. If you can't find it with the viewer it's probably not in the GC.com database Hope that made sense gl
  4. I've never tried a .loc file, try converting it to gpx .. GPS Visualizer
  5. There is the rudiments of the beginning of a mobile version. I tried it out for a few minutes on my daughter's iPhone and it seemed to load pretty fast. It'll ask you a couple of times if it's OK to 'upload' your current location. Should work great up there in bezerkely.
  6. From the 1974 station description: PN0692'BANK OF NEENAH, IN LINE WITH SOUTHEAST FACE OF BUILDING, 3/4 FT. BELOW PN0692'GROUND SURFACE, A BRASS PLUG WELDED TO A 5/8 INCH DIAMETER COPPER PN0692'COATED STEEL ROD, 10 FT. LONG, ENCASED IN A 6 INCH DIAMETER CONCRETE PN0692'PIPE WITH COVER. Looks like it has a cover to me... like this one- FV1959
  7. Searched the Wisconson state datasheet file for WIRRC and came up with this list QN0062 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED WIRRC QN0053 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED WIRRC AB2346 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED WIRRC OL0254 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED WIRRC OM0138 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED WIRRC OM0145 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED WIRRC OM0312 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED WIRRC
  8. Here's another handy coordinate tool FizzyCalc
  9. Very cool... thnx. I've yet to find (or look for:) ) a blazed tree BM.
  10. Use this Benchmark Viewer to find the location you were fishing and see if there is an "NGS" benchmark there - if its not on that viewer it probably won't be in the GC database.
  11. There is also one for Google Earth, also by one of our members: Google Earth Survey Marker & USGS Map Overlays | TSQMadness.com
  12. Cool. That's pretty elaborate - would that be a crossed flintlock and arrow?
  13. Anyone have a guess when metal detectors may have been common for someone to use looking for marks? When I see "Not Founds" from the 60's and 70's I wonder if they had access to metal detectors. As yet, I haven't tried for any of these. Thnx
  14. Take a look at the Scardy Cat Benchmark Viewer - enter Lodi, Ca in the location search. If you can determine which one it is, there is a good chance it is on the GC site. If you can't find it on that viewer, it probably isn't on the GC site and the only thing you can do is savor the find and perhaps waymark it - see this GC.com faq gl
  15. I haven't read that paper yet but what I got out of their Ten-Year-Plan was that while they were phasing out the use of passive marks, they were still going to maintain ties from the new datums to the passive marks AND maintain easy public access to the information for the passive mark networks - maybe with current computing power and information technology a bit of mathemagics, its not too hard to adjust all the passive control by making only a relatively few observations?? (That was a doozy of a run-on sentance )
  16. So... I guess I'll also mention that you don't necessarily have to use the paperless aspect of your Colorado to hunt benchmarks (which is what a lot of those links above are about) - to start off, it might be easier to just print out the datasheet to to have with you and then dump the .loc into MapSource and send it to your GPSr. Just remember that the coordinates of a scaled mark can be way off and the descriptions in the datasheet will be important in finding the mark.
  17. (Enter Stage Left - The Intrepid Amateur Benchmark Hunter)
  18. There are quite a few threads on this: Here is one And another One of the main things seems to be sure and read the datasheets thoroughly (the text descriptions/directions) Good Luck, don't hesitate to ask questions.
  19. If your in an area with service there is the beginning of a mobile version of the ScardyCat benchmark page that uses the phone's location...
  20. Go here - Virginia State Benchmark Viewer and enter - Tri-State Peak, Ewing, VA 24248 - for the location search. Is one of those it??
  21. has anybody figured out how to query the ngs for multiple datasheets from a list of pids?
  22. thnx foxtrot hey... that's me. Until recently, my thinking was that if I could find it from a previous description then it must be adequate and not need any changes.
  23. hmm... I didn't notice that was you, did you change your picture thingy?? Very curious about v3 - love your app. I thought about asking for having the PID stripped from the fullsheet but ..... i didn't
