help with topo maps
Phreakshew / Team Smurfy replied to morphik's topic in GPS technology and devices
As far as street maps go, check out the Ibycus USA maps - it includes practically ALL streets covering the ENTIRE US (including Alaska and Hawaii) for FREEEEE! Developed by a Canandian college student using data from the US Census bureau, the guy could use a donation, but it's not necessary. http://www.ibycus.com/ibycususa/ http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/19 -
Paperless GPS Units
Phreakshew / Team Smurfy replied to rocket1lf's topic in GPS technology and devices
I've recently upgraded from a Garmin eTrex Venture HC to a Garmin Oregon 450, and I gotta tell ya - this thing rocks! I'm loving the touch screen, and (with a premium membership to geocaching.com) I enjoy being able to download pocket queries of 500 caches at a time into the unit, and then punching up the nearest cache wherever I am at and then being able to read the full description, hints, and even the past few logs. I think the 450 is a better deal than the 450T because there are lots of free maps out there to download (such as the Ibycus US maps) as opposed to paying $100 more for Garmin's maps. Also I didn't think the 550 was worth the extra $100 because, really, do I need a crappy camera on my GPSr? My phone already has a crappy camera, and if I really want to take some decent photos, I'll bring along my Canon. -
I was just wondering that same thing. Thanks from me too!

Please Help with Pocket Query
Phreakshew / Team Smurfy replied to Phreakshew / Team Smurfy's topic in How do I...?
O, I see. Still finding out how this works here- I was basing my reaction on what I read here: "Brand new queries tend to run almost right away at Geocaching.com, so if in the next five minutes after you check the day of the week, you don't see something in your in-box, head back to the Geocaching.com/pocket page and have a look." ( http://www.markwell.us/pq.htm ) Just glad that I wasn't missing some crucial step like hitting [enter] or something! thanx -J -

Phreakshew / Team Smurfy replied to eric_lackey's topic in How do I...?
I use Ibycus for the States. No topo yet, but it has very detailed street info! http://www.ibycus.com/ibycususa/ I just loaded up 3gigs worth of streets for the ENTIRE U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska and even - hmmm I really don't know what that place is - FOR FREE - just because I can. :-) Somebody donate to the Ibycus guy cause his maps are awesome! Oh yeah ~ also check out: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/ -
Hello! Thanks for reading this. I am a new Premium member and I am having a hard time getting any pocket queries to generate. I've read the documentation, been to this site: http://www.markwell.us/pq.htm, followed the directions, but still nothing! Here's what I have so far: 1. I create a new query, checking yesterday, today, and tomorrow to generate, & click "run this query every week" 2. changed email to my gmail account, making sure it's in .gpx format and zipped 3. hit "submit information", which gives me message "Thanks! Your pocket query has been modified and currently results in 500 caches. You can preview the search on the nearest cache page." 4. I can hit "preview the search" - yep, there they are, showing 25 at a time 5. I can hit "your pocket queries" - uh huh, there is the chart showing 2 so far, both of which say "never" in the "last generated" column 6. "add to queue" doesn't do anything. It is unclickable. 7. ???????????????????????????????????

Garmin etrex Venture HC
Phreakshew / Team Smurfy replied to DStubb's topic in GPS technology and devices
I've been caching for about a year with my Venture HC and I love the thing. It's super accurate, so although I usually do have a spare compass on me, I have not had to use it while geocaching because the Garmin just works. Make sure WAAS is enabled. Remember that the Venture HC does not have an electronic compass, therefore it can only tell you which way you are heading if you are moving. If you are walking towards a destination and then stop, the unit might get a little confused at first when you start walking again but only very briefly; it has to see which way you are heading in relation to the satellites. So just keep going in a straight line until the unit corrects itself, which should only be a few seconds. -
Looks like other people have had trouble using Wherigo on the Oregon... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=233309 Hope this issue has been fixed with the new Oregons coming out this year!

I like the Camino browser a lot and have had 0 problems with the garmin communicator plugin. In fact, I made a custom icon and sent it in to www.pimpmycamino.com & they puti it on their site! ( themes: app icons / El Camino 2) cheers
