  1. Like many, I'm glad to hear it's not just me... I have some bugs I need to log in/out. I'll get it taken care of soon... -RP
  2. Nevermind... I figured it out! It's pretty simple in EASYGPS... just select the waypoint and then choose "EDIT WAYPOINT" after right-clicking on it. I'm REALLY excited about this! It's getting easier (and I'm discovering things that I didn't think that this GPS would do... like 'services off of exits'... neat gadget!) I just need to find more time to go caching now! LOL! So far, I'm working A-O-K on COM1 on my desktop. We'll see how it works out once I download the software at work on my laptop... might be a different story then I suppose.... hopefully not. THANKS AGAIN FOLKS! I REALLY APPRECIATE IT! RP
  3. Timpat, Thanks for the response! I hadn't configured the program for the GPS... in short, I hadn't gone to preferences and set the eTrex Legend as the GPS. Seems to be working well now... Second question... Can I rename waypoints to something other than the standard GCHXXX? RP
  4. Again guys and gals... thank you! I have my unit and I'm having trouble getting EASYGPS to communicate with my Garmin GPS Legend. Can someone explain how I can download a waypoint to my Garmin? Here's what I've done so far to avoid overlap and maybe help with troubleshooting. The serial cable is connected. The garmin is in GARMIN interface mode. I've downloaded a waypoint to the EASYGPS program and click on SEND but, nothing happens... Can someone provide some guidance? THANKS!!! RP
  5. Thanks Sparky & Sk8r. I'll check into the topo program... I would like to have the option of pulling up a map on occasion in the case that I'm lost in an unknown area... which program would work with the eTrex for that circumstance? RP
  6. I guess I should add that I have a Garmin eTrex Legend.... Doesn't that affect what types of software I can utilize?
  7. I guess the topic title speaks for itself. I'll only be in the United States... Thanks guys and gals! -RP
  8. Thanks a million guys! I'll check out the GSAK as well! So you can display what's on the screen of the GPS on the laptop screen? Do I just toggle input sources on my laptop? Wow... this is getting cooler by the minute! RP
  9. I believe that MS Streets still does this... not 100% sure... Also, you could utilize microsoft.terraserver.com by finding your location on an aerial and placing the cursor over that place. I believe the coords are shown... RP
  10. So, long story short, I can download the coords of the cache's I'd like to find. I can download them to my GPS as waypoints and then navigate to the cache utilizing the GPS? Just that easy? Also, on the cables, I think the Garmin Legend comes with a Serial Cable in the box (doesn't it? -- I'll have to ask my buddy to see if he has this item) thus, I think I'm in good shape but, the power cable does intrigue me. When it's plugged into power, I assume I'm not utilizing the batteries? Seems like this would be ULTRA useful while traveling over a longer distance where battery life was important. Can you charge rechargables in the GPS? One last question, when the cig. lighter is plugged in, can I transfer data to the GPS from a laptop while charging? THANKS!!! RP
  11. Thanks for the replies guys and I'm sorry to toss such 'newbie' questions at you guys. I downloaded EasyGPS and, at first glance, it looks like it'd be CAKE to use. Is it really as simple as it looks? Also, on the cables, I assume the combo cable would be useful if you were on the road with a laptop? Can you plug into the cig lighter and the GPS at the same time? Computer too? Thanks guys!!! I'm getting excited about getting one of these now! RP
  12. Well, in hindsight, I suppose I should've started this thread in the GETTING STARTED forum...
  13. First time post although I've been watching for over a week now. I've tried searching for the answer to my question before posting but, with all of the hits that I recieve on my searches, it's nearly impossible to filter through it all to arrive at an answer... so, with that in mind... I'm looking very seriously at getting the Garmin Legend (as a buddy of mine has it and is wanting to sell it as he never uses it). It's like new and he bought it as a toy (not for caching -- I'll get him hooked after I buy this! LOL! JK!) My question is... how do I get the coordinates from geocaching.com down to the GPS unit itself? Right now, I've been depending on using a GPS from where I work and just printing out sheets of paper indicating coordinates. Isn't there a better way? I see that geocaching.com offers to 'download waypoints' and I understand what a 'waypoint' is but, how do I get it from the www to the GPS? Further, I understand that there is a serial cable to connect the two but, I guess my snafu is the communication between the computer and GPS... What programs? Can you rename waypoints to match caches? Like I said, I'm a total newbie here (just started caching last week). Hold my hand and walk me through it if you don't mind. I'm computer savvy but very new to the whole GPS game. Thanks guys and gals! I sincerely appreciate it!!! RP
