  1. Had a GPS12XL for years (since 99) and used it for mountain navigation. Found out about Geocaching from a friend who's Dad read a small column about it in the Telegraph or something.. We tried it out and went from there. Have subsequently bought a Geko GPS for Mrs James W to use and a Bluetooth one for use with a PDA. So to answer the original question... A bit of both!
  2. Bright sunshine and clear blue skies now in Chester
  3. The Wirral (where I live) is a bit like that.. I'll often see snow in Chester (Place of work) but the Wirral seems to have its own mini micro-climate, I guess due to being surrounded by water on three sides? Just my theory. We rarely get the extremes of weather there. I like the snow too, I hope it lasts well into the weekend in Llanberis (Wales) as I'm camping there this weekend.
  4. Just stopped again... but more grey clouds are looming! Very cold outside.
  5. It's dropping quite heavily here in Chester! Not sticking yet but surely it's got to eventually - when it's falling at this rate. Saw a lot of snow on the Welsh hills too when driving into work this morning. Any major snowfall where you are? I believe the east coast has had the most?
  6. Looks like you've put a lot of effort into that, looks good! Like it. Cheers James
  7. I can vouch for this model, I've used mine for 4 months now without fault - better accuracy that my old Garmin GPS 12 and fast acquiring etc. When using with TomTom Navigator 5, it's so sensitive that I can turn it on and leave it in a cubby hole under the dash. It still tracks my position with no loss in signal quality, even through the dashboard and body of a Freelander! Recommended. PS - I got mine for £70 inc. P&P off ebay .. although it was from Hong Kong. Waited about 1 week. James
  8. Cool, have heard of the 4x4 network via my involvement with Raynet.. I like to try and get to the more out-of-reach places too when working with Raynet. Sounds good! Why not look into getting your Foundation Amateur licence and getting some proper comms on the go for your exercises like these guys! ...Anyway - I'll go away now and stop hijacking the thread with cheeky comments All the best to you, James Edited for speeling..
  9. Big congrats again!! I'm sure it was only last week I was congratulating you on the 100! PS Like your new avitar (and your vehicle! ). Is that a CB antenna or an amateur one?
  10. I've found Beeline GPS to work quite well, it works alongside Pocket Sonar .gpx files so that you can view your GeoCache page, then select the appropriate waypoint in BeeLine. It's also got the Cache symbols (Treasure Chest, etc.) Hope this helps James
  11. ...Should be okay - from the Website: I've used these, they are quite good. Heavy to carry around though if you get the one that covers your rucksack and you have to carry it!
  12. I've got one of those! Everyone can find it apart from me, and it's my cache!!
  13. I think of "not available 24 hours" attribute as an access thing instead of a recommendation, for example if the cache is only accessible due to high/low tides, opening times for a park, etc. etc. Maybe there really aren't any caches that can ONLY be done at night? Merely just recommended to do at night, as per the attribute?
  14. I think the picture might be a 'fake' if you know what I mean (i.e. Not one of the official easter eggs/hints from the production company as per the websites I gave links to) ..but it does mean the faker is a Geocacher?? ..or is the whole plot really based around some elaborate cache event?? I am thinking that that pic would make an ace 'Lost'-based puzzle cache though!
  15. WARNING! This is on-topic (ish!) but if you're into LOST and haven't seen anything of the second series, this may turn into a bit of a spoiler for you!! Sorry to bounce this but I think this is on topic.... Been wasting too much time this evening scrolling through all the Lost forums, and the 8 or so 'fake' websites that are just as much a mystery as the programme eg. http://www.oceanicworldair.com/... ...Anyway, one of the boards here posted an image that was briefly available on one of the Lost websites called hansofoundation.org - This site is based after http://www.thehansofoundation.org/, one of these 'fake' websites and affiliated to http://thedharmainitiative.org/login.html and http://thedharmainitiative.org/... Right, obviously this isn't a LOST forum and don't worry about the above too much.. BUT Does anybody recognise something in the bottom left corner of the picture?? Check this picture out!
  16. Errrmmmmm.... Have to admit I agree with Kitty Hawk above, not sure this is the place for such grievances... Can't lock the topic unfortunately as it's not mine.
  17. Many thanks for the help so far. To elaborate, I'm asking on behalf of a friend and fellow cacher, who doesn't use the forums. I'll direct him to email 'The Wombles' as advised. Many thanks to all! James
  18. Just bumping this from way back because I've been unable to find any definitive answer whilst searching the forum, and I notace GAGB don't have any standing agreement listed for EH.. Does anyone have any advice or experiences to share with caches on English heritage sites before we approach them? Would really appreciate any help. Many thanks in advance James
  19. I think this could be perceived as being slightly disrespectful to all of the other contributors to this forum who take a lot of enjoyment in getting involved with whatever the conversations of the day are, amongst a like-minded online community.
  20. I got the email yesterday too for the alternative forum. Was going to post up here to see if anyone else had recieved this unsolicited spam, but this thread's beaten me to it (even if it is drifiting OT!)
  21. Cool, I understand - Thanks. Must be good to get a 'good' waypoint/tracking number by chance. I've seen a couple of good ones/obviously arranged ones like this ... guess they're a nice touch if you can manage to arrange it! James
  22. Excuse my ignorance, I'm curious......... Are these labels/tags for geocoins? Who owns them/administers them and do you actually have to buy them off Groundspeak? Just wondering! Thanks James
