  1. What is the unwritten policy? The logbook, of which an electronic version is displayed at the bottom of each cache listing, is meant to record the history of a cache. experienced. Past finders or the cache owner may want to read about the experiences of others. Since this cache has one find in over 10 years, I don't think there will be many future seekers and, if there are, I doubt they will rely on the single past log to assist them in their hunt.No past finders so that is not a concern...
  2. I am trying to determine the policy of not allowing any sort of note, DNF log, Congrats to the FTF or otherwise on the actual cache page for this one cache. There are many caches out there with numerous followers and I have not seen this sort of policy implemented. None of the notes or logs were inflammatory, rude, obnoxious or otherwise. Most were positive and friendly and within the spirit of the hobby. I have not received any answer or been referred to any policy that would support the actions. Just saying...
  3. Yeah, I saw that too. I guess there always has to be some knucklehead that feels they just have to waste the time of others. It's about as funny as that cacher that was going to bogus-log the ISS cache because they saw it pass overhead. Knucklehead from Illinois here. I had read this thread yesterday and thought it would be funny to post an FTF on the eve of Storm's quest. I quickly deleted the log and replaced it with a :-) note to demonstrate I was trying to be funny. Hope at least one person smiled. Good luck to Storm!
  4. Hi. I live in IL and am planning a long geo weekend. I would like to go visit a location that has a few power bike trails so I can bring the bike and concentrate on those trails. Can anyone suggest a particular area that has a lot of bike friendly caching? Tzinny
  5. Why not just put links to the full-size images right in the description? You've already got HTML in your description, so you could add: <a href="http://img.geocaching.com/cache/37a7ca8d-4ce4-40e1-93bf-dbf06792ce38.jpg">Your text here</a> and <a href="http://img.geocaching.com/cache/18bbc47b-d749-406b-8a03-1149a48de77f.jpg">Your text here</a> in an appropriate spot. It might make them easier to find, anyway. I always forget about those image links down there. WOW. Thanks A-Team for not only the suggestion but writing the html too. Much appreciated. Cache updated....Happy New Year.
  6. Hi. I own a Letterbox in Chicago (see link). http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=940454ab-b2ad-4e2a-bce9-3a2c6ce22bd5 As part of the cache, you need to print off Sheet #1 and Sheet #2 and they links are on the page. After a recent GC.com update, I was advised that when people are clicking on the links provided, the sheets are now shrunk and you cannot increase the size without distorting the image. There is a work around by removing the "/display" from the web address for the image but I would like to simply be able to have folks click and get the full size image as intended. Any thoughts? Thanks, Tzinny
  7. Hi. I have the Dakota 10. The basemap shows the major streets but it does not have the maps of all roads/streets that other gps units do. What do I need to purchase/download to get this for the DAkota 10? Thanks.
  8. I am going to buy a Dakota 10 for my next gps. The Dakota does not come with topo maps. However I found this listing on amazon. It is listed for $249 and inidcates it comes with "gps bundle with topo maps". However, other Dakota 10s not described as coming with "gps bundle with topo maps" are higher in price. My reading is that the one for $249 comes with topo maps as an "extra". Do you guys agree that? Sounds like a good deal. Agree? http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Dakota-Bundle...2034&sr=8-6
  9. I recently saw a bug with close to 10k miles logged by another cacher. Anyone know what bug or coin has the most miles?
  10. At this risk of overgeneralizing, allow me to offer the opinion that most who have the capability for paperless geocaching and try it, never go back to carrying paper. Understood. Both models I listed PN-40 and Dakota 10 allow for paperless. Dakota is slightly more expensive. Just wondering if anyone has specific reasons why one over the other.
  11. My current gps, a Garmin eTrex Legend, is out of commission. I am now looking to replace my gps unit. In looking at various reviews, I like the idea of one that has the paperless caching feature and downloads the info for each cache to the unit. However, unless this feature is so great, not sure if I am ready to spend the extra $. If I do go this route, I have narrowed my choices to: 1. Delorme PN-40 2. Garmin Dakota 10. They are both priced similarly and have similar features as far as I can tell. The Garmin may be slightly more expensive but not by much. My third option is just to get a new Legend. I was doing fine with it and I can save about $100 or so. Any insight from personal experience with these units would be appreciated. Thanks.
  12. I have a Garmin e-trex legend and got it last year when I started. I recently fell while out finding a cache and my gps is not working too well. I think it is broken or close to it. Any suggestions on a new handheld gps? Looking to spend $250 or less.
  13. Can you see who is viewing your cache?
  14. Watched the documentary. Not bad. Interesting assortment of other video clips to view on this page.
  15. I would like to post photos and other stuff in a cache description. While I know it relates to html codes, I am not quite sure how to accomplish this. Can someone give me a basic tutorial or refer me to a previous thread that may have one? Thanks.
  16. If you don't understand our use of "PQ", it's short for "Pocket Query" - something that you, as a premium member, should use whenever possible. REALLY a handy way of pulling up files of caches for your GPS. Go to your "MY PROFILE" page, and look over in the right column. There are also tutorials around here for using this feature at gc.com. If you don't understand "GSAK", it's short for "GSAK" - really, Geocaching Swiss Army Knife. It's a great PC utility for managing the information you get from "PQs", sorting them, filtering them, loading them into your GPS and a host of other things. Find it here at www.gsak.net. Thanks for the info. I will check it out.
  17. There is a local guy who is a huge FTF hound. Ape58. I think of his 550-600 finds, over 100 are FTF.
  18. After reading these suggestions (half of which I don't understand), I guess I will stick to my procedure in getting ready to go out for the hunt. Happy Caching all.
  19. I am curious on how some of you prepare for a caching outing. I am sure there are some shortcuts I am mssing. This is usually what I do: 1. Find the area where I am going to go that day 2. Download all the caching I intend to try to the GPS (Garmin Legend). 3. On a seperate piece of paper, I wrtie down the caches' name and coords and any notable info from the website. 4. I head out and go looking. This is an easy process if I am just going for a few but it is a bit time consuming if I am going on a longer outing. Anyone have some tips etc. to coordinate an outing?
  20. When I hide a cache and write up the description, I can only do simple font. I have seen many caches though in which the descriptions have multi colors and very creative fonts, pictures etc. How is this done?
  21. Wow. Thanks for all the replies. The logs on some of these are fun to read.
  22. I was planning a trip to the islands of Turks and Caicos and was curious if any caches are hidden there. There are 5. One of them was hidden in April and has not been found yet (today is 10/15). It is not a difficult cache according to the ratings. It got me wondering what is the longest span between hiding a cache and the FTF. Anyone have some examples?
