I'm still a noob when it comes to GPS tech and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to walk me through the map buying process.
I'll give some back story here I bought a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx recently. I was waiting to buy maps until I could sell some old junk on eBay and beef up my paypal account. Now I have around $100 that I can spend and I would like to get the city navigator maps from garmim. The problem is that I'm not sure what to buy I would like to save as much money as I can by buying maps off of eBay if possible but I don't know if I would be buying outdated maps or what. I have seen 2009 updates and maps with no dates and I'm just not sure what I'm looking at half the time. I know the garmin site has updates for maps on it but I don't know how all that works or if they charge you for updates. So basically I'm very confused and I'm probably making this much harder than it needs to be.
Also are there any other programs that I should have for my GPS?
Any advice would be appreciated.

So far she likes them our longest hike after buying the boots was about 8 miles over moderate terrain and she didn't complain at all. They seem to hold up to the cold and keep out the wet but we'll see if they are still in one piece after a month or two of hiking.
Oh yeah for the TSP topic its most often referred to as TVP for textured vegetable protein. While a lot of it is mostly soy it can contain other vegetable ingredients.

HAHA! I can sympathize with the harmful emissions. The first few months after a dramatic diet switch can be very hazardous to the senses.

The point is to make as minimal an impact as possible I wouldn't consider my GF to be an extremist but believe me there are some out there. Some choose live entirely off the grid where they can grow their own food & live with out harming anything (or as close to it as you can get). I was just asking for help finding boots I didn't think that this would turn into an ethics debate. If you wanted to you could sit down and easily poke holes in the beliefs or ethical choices of every person in the world. The fact remains that you can be understanding of the choices made by others or you can attempt to belittle them because they don't see the world in the same way that you do.
As for the questions above
about wool, it all comes down to personal choice and what information can be gathered about the wools source. My GF for example has no issue with alpaca wool because we can go to the local farm and see that the alpaca are well kept before we buy wool from that farm. But, like I said Its personal choice.
do you avoid dairy? Or do you eat cheese made with the fake rennet? I eat dairy but my GF does not.
Do you wear any faux animal products? I have a fake leather jacket buy my GF doesn't wear anything made of faux animal parts if she can help it she says they look tacky.
Do you buy vegan / vegetarian products made to mimic animal products? If you mean like "not dogs" or "bocca burgers" we only eat these things if were in a restaurant with very few vegan/vegi choices. For the most part they taste like rubber. And how I see it is why eat something that is supposed to taste like what your avoiding?
Do you only buy foodstuffs which were raised without pesticides? If we can then yes, We will either buy from local growers or to a market about an hour from home that sells only pesticide free produce. But the world we live in is what it is and sometimes you have to buy what you can get.
what if you find a worm in an apple? Do you set it free? Yes thus why I buy locally grown food so that the worms freedom will not affect the eco system.
Should you buy any products made in countries with poor animal rights histories? First off we always try to buy local merchandise. Secondly it comes down to the company and the country purchases should support animal rights as best they can.
Do you make sure any medical procedure you receive has not been perfected using animals? sadly that isn't possible almost every procedure has been perfected on animals.
What about medicines and vaccines made from animal products? I recall one time I sat at a 24h drug store for almost an hour reading ingredients on different brands of "NyQuill" until I found one that my GF could use that should answer your question.
I don't mind answering real questions about being a vegi or vegan I just ask that you treat our decision to be meat free with the same respect that we treat your decision to eat meat. We are all free to make our own choices. Like I said I was just asking for advice on boots not for an ethical discussion.

It looks like the company I bought from has raised the price. When I was looking to buy mine this happened a few times but if you keep looking you'll find one on sale.

Some kid might take you seriously and attempt to send his/her hamster on a road trip.

I got a Vista HCx yesterday and I love it so far it's well built and has loads of features I used it today to find 4 caches and it worked great. It has a memory card slot for adding maps and a decent all be it very limited base map installed. Check amazon I got mine for $185 with free shipping. you might even be able to find it cheaper if you do some research. Good luck to you.

I'm new to all of this as well.
So far my girlfriend and I have been carrying ziplocks in our back packs with the following items.
Glowsticks
Yo-Yos
dollar store pedometers
some misc. toys
some signature items (micro dice for me and tiny alligators for her)
But I plan on bringing a few higher quality items like compasses and other outdoor supplies because I am finding that you will come across more expensive items now and then and it's nice to have something of equal value to trade.
I was told that the golden rules are [ Swag left => Swag taken] & [ Swag left = Child friendly]

Hello all, I'm very new to this whole world of caching. My girlfriend and myself are really into the long hikes and wilderness caches in general. But, I also love the road trips you know the pointless kind that lead you to see something that makes you think " Wow, someone had a lot of free time.".
I would love to here about any caches that you have found (or placed) that are around these places. Ya, know the worlds second largest ball of twine or that rock that looks like a dinosaur or a mystery spot or anything out of the ordinary.
I am headed to a place in PA this week end that hints at some sort of alien activity if it turns out to be cool I'll be sure to update here.
Can't wait to read some stories.

I understand what you are saying. But, for her it's a matter of avoiding the industry as a whole. Look at it this way you eat it you wear it.
If there was no meat industry there would be no leather industry so it all is in a circle of sorts but I certainly wouldn't call it a circle of life. -

I knew someone would eventually ask a question like this. The answer is no she won't be eating them. It's just a personal choice that she has made not to USE any products that contain animal parts. It was a bit difficult for me to get my head around at first but it has become a part of our lives reading every label and doing an over abundance of research before buying many products. The really hard part comes when we have to buy any sort of chemical product and she breaks out the animal testing book to see what products have been tested on animals. We try to not buy anything that has used animals for testing. Like I said it can be a bit tricky but you get used to it. -
I'm glad to say the we stumbled on to a Payless website and found out that Airwalk makes a whole line of animal free snowboarding boots that only cost about $50 a pair. We bought a pair for my gf yesterday and tried them out on a 5 mile hike at a local park. they held up well and kept her warm so for now they are the vegan boot of choice.
Thank you all so much for the links and advice you would be surprised just how many people will shun us for not eating meat or wearing animal products. It's nice to see that people here don't have issues with it.

The world apparently hates me.
I went to target.com to order the item and guess what its OUT OF STOCK
! It was in stock 5 hours ago and I thought I'll wait till my girlfriend gets home and let her order it she has the prime credit card rate and all.
So, now I have missed the opportunity to order the vista twice.
I decided that I would just get 1 off of amazon and pay an extra $25. I guess thats what I get for being slow. sorry to complain just dumb luck I guess. Either way I should have my new vista hcx in 5-9 days then I can start searching for caches

Hello all,
First off I would like to say that I will probably be asking a lot of questions about finding vegan gear hopefully some of you will be able to help.
I should say that I am not the vegan but rather my girlfriend I on the other hand am just a vegetarian.
So heres the question she is looking to find vegan (Meaning absolutely no animal parts) boots that are rated to at least -40 and cost around $100 or less we have had little luck so far if we find a pair the store is out of her size or they aren't suited for the withers here in northern Ohio.
Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Mfamilee!! I love you I had been to that site like 5 times but never saw the tiny "see all GPS" link I thought they only had the 1 hand held.

I'm having no luck here I tried to order the vista from Walmart and it was out of stock. So I thought I'd check back now and then and see if they had any in but when I just checked their price went up to $225. Go figure.
I guess I'll keep looking

I've only encountered a black bear once and I was safely in my car at the time. My camp was only about 500 yards away I was unarmed and I will admit I didn't sleep well that night.
As for bear spray I have never tried it but I am certified in the use and instruction of the human version of full police strength pepper spray. I will tell you that during training I was hit directly in the eyes with a string foam version of the spray and I was down for over 20 min and couldn't see straight for over 30 min.
I know that when it comes to dogs the effects are shortened to around 2-5 min for blindness and 30min- a few hours for sent. This makes me wonder if bears or cats would act the same way. I know that when dealing with a dog if they can find you after the spray wears off they will come for you. So I would wonder if the bear will keep running or just get mad.
Even with that in mind I will still carry spray with me if I am going into bear territory.
Like every other item in your pack it comes down to what your comfortable with and what research you have done. I personally would recommend finding some type of training before you use any defense product. For example if you spray a mist type spray into the wind you now have to deal with a bear, unbelievable pain, blindness, and a host of other complications.

First of all thank you all for your advice there is a lot to this whole GPS thing.
After searching through evey Garmin X model that I could find and checking out all of the links that you guys offered it seems that one of a few different things can happen from here.
1)I can get lucky and win a low bid on a really high end model. (I had a crushing "you have been out bid" moment earlier in the closing seconds of an auction.)
2) I can listen to my girlfriend and buy an extremely low end out dated used model for like $30 and make sure I like geocaching before I invest much more cash.
3) I can go with a middle of the road model like the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Handheld GPS for $150 on ebay or the Garmin Vista HCx for $165 at walmart
4) I could attempt to display some self control and wait a few weeks for all of the after x-mass deals to pop up.
I guess I'll just have to see how much cash Santa brings and how impatient I become.
By the way any opinions on the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Handheld GPS? It looks decent but I could be missing something I am still learning.

So you would suggest something like the garmin GPSMAP 60CSx?
I was searching eBay and saw some new ones selling for about $250 this is a bit out of my range but if I can get my girlfriend to chip in we might be able to swing it.

I'm very new to all of this and am going to buy my first GPS as soon as I get my X-mass money. So heres the problem I'm only foreseeing about $150-$200 in x-mass cash. I know I'm not getting a really high end device for this amount but I would like to find something decent that I can use to start geocaching as well as something that will help out on the road or trail if I'm lost. So far the best option that I have found seems to be the Garmin gpsmap 60c I can get one of these off of eBay for about $150 Then I figure I'll try to get some extra maps for it after I save a little more cash.
What do you guys think? Are there any know drawbacks to this model? Any advice would be appreciated.

We keep a small metal "treasure chest" with swag in it. We are new to the sport so its no where near full yet. Usually I take a small item like a plastic animal or my favorite find yet a "Grow Your Own Pinata" and my girlfriend loves finding pins and stickers. I know most of what we keep is junk but some day I plan on looking through the box and saying something like "remember when we found this T-rex toy".
