  1. I'm a newbie but I like my 20 and have used it several times on the road testing its redraw capabilities. Road to road seemed fine. It was able to redraw with plenty of time going 65 miles per hour down the interstate. I think it would handle fine at any speed at or below that. If going faster you might have an issue. I like the poi capabilities as well as the paperless geocaching. I've been able to edit my cache comments in TOPO 7 reducing all the fluff and retaining the important details before I sent it to my GPS. I havn't had any troubles with the 800 character limit so far and I've loaded over 200 cache's onto my unit (getting psyched up for spring). If you are on a budget like I am you will be happy with the 20. If you have plenty to spend go for the 40. From everything I've read you'll like the extras. Good Luck happy hunting.
  2. Hey all. Thanks for the comments and advice. Called Tech. They quoted 40 plus shipping to repair the screen. Team Delorme has emailed me though, so maybe we can end this thing with better results than the afore mentioned forty. Either way I will let you know. Thanks Again.
  3. Hey All, Just got a new delorme 20 for Christmas. Received it the first week of January. Dropped it while trying to juggle the usb cord, topo discs and unit in front of the pc tonight. The screen busted and splintered. The unit still works but I'm sure the Water proof is completely gone now and I just don't want a huge crack in my brand new unit. Problem: I have the box its contents and a shipping receipt but I don't see anything anywhere about a warranty. Has anybody dealt with Delorme? What is their policy on returns and exchanges? I'm so bummed, I've only taken the unit out once. This is so not cool. Any info at all would help the panic thanks.
  4. Just tried the drag and drop/ that was awesome! So much better than importing one click at a time. Thanks for the tip! Next question: can i make routes using coords or am I just stuck using addresses? If so how? Thanks for any and all replies!
  5. Thanks so much. Upgraded to premium and have been dowloading gpx all day. This is great!!!!
  6. Haven't seen this yet. If service can help get you up and running let me know. I've been playing with mine all day today and its been great. Can't wait to show you some of the stuff this package can do. Figured out loc files and downloaded some of the aerial photography stuff. It's really impressive. debating about getting the premium membership so i can download gpx. TTYS.
  7. Hey all. Just got my Delorme pn 20 set up to download loc files. Now I'm a little dissappointed because the paperless caching experience i was coveting is not coming to fruition. Loc only downloads coords no descriptions or files. So I read up and I guess what I am really after is GPX files. My question is does the pn 20 support these files? I don't want to pay for the membership and then find out that it still won't work. Do i use the same method as the Loc files and just choose gpx as file type or is there another method? Also does anyone know how I can create routes between my geocaches using my pc. i know how to do it using the hand held but i thought it would be good to do it using topo. I've tried the route feature but it will only allow me to put in actual addresses not waypoints. While i have you, does anyone know when the geocache upgrades are supposed to be available? I'm really looking forward to these. Thanks so much for the help.
  8. I got my 400 for Christmas too. Alas, we returned ours. We didn't get quite as far as you've gotten before it began freezing on me. I kept having to take the batteries out and reinsert to let the thing boot up. So we are on the hunt again. We're looking at Delorme pn 20, 40 and the Garmin 60csx. You might check those out if you decide to return your 400. The Delorme website is offering 50 rebates for units bought before the 31st at third party retailers. Some people replied to my post the other day and said that basically you could be happy with the 400 but you really had to work with it and tweak it. For a newb like me I knew I didn't have the knowledge base to know how to tweak it so we gave that model up. The cool thing I'm seeing from the Delorme camp is that topo and city maps are included for the US straight out of the box. Then you pay thirty a year and you have access to about a billion maps and several different types, including aerial photography sources. Their videos and other review videos I've checked out look really amazing. Just another newbies two sense. Anybody got more info? Please share.
  9. Thanks for the advice. We did take our unit back to the store. We decided that since it wasn't turning on properly there was something wrong with our particular device. Since we don't have the holiday pressure anymore, we've decided to take our time and research the various systems. Figure out what each does and see what we really want. If anyone has some suggestions we'd love to hear them. Thanks so much. Team Tindle
  10. Thanks for the responses. Since we couldn't get the Triton to turn on without taking the batteries out of the device, we opted to take it back. We figured that if it had that basic of a malfunction fifteen minutes out of the box there was either something wrong with that individual device or the line. We saw a lot of bad reviews on the Triton stuff so we decided to wait a little longer and do some research. We are really looking forward to doing some more geocaching. We got our toes wet and now we're hooked. So to speed up the process please recommend a good unit so that I can check out some reviews. Thanks so much for all of your help!
  11. Hey, I'm totally new to the GPS thing. My husband and I took an interest after hearing about geocaching. We want our GPS to geocache, help on hiking trails, and help with driving directions in cities and backroads. I bought the Magellan 400 Triton as an impulse gift for Christmas. Now I'm looking at all the forums and trying this thing and don't know what I need to do to get it going. I turn it off and when I go to turn it back on it either goes to a shutdown screen or it goes to the basemap but won't let me go to a menu or anything from there. I have to pull the batteries out and let the Magellan screen reboot for it to do anything. I also can't figure out how to get street maps. It came wth the NG Topo explorer cds but Those don't seem to be detailed according to streets and places. What do I use instead? All I've found online is stuff that works for the Garmin. Should I take this thing back and grab a Garmin instead? Please help. Christmas is coming and I would like to have a useable GPS under the tree by then. Thanks Team Tindle
  12. Hey, I am totally new to the GPS. My husband and I took an interest in it when we heard about geocaching. We wanted a unit that would allow us to geo cache, help out on hikes, and get us around various cities and backroads. I bought a Megellan Triton 400 with the TOPO explorer pack because it was in the price range (Stupid I know) Now everything I read is bad about this model. Everytime I try to turn it on it freezes and then I have to turn it out and pull out the batteries to get it to boot to a screen that I can do anything with. I can't find anything resembling a street map on the topo website and I don't know what else I could use to download streetmaps to this thing. Should I just pack this thing up and try for something else? Or is there someone out there who knows how to get this thing to work. Please help, Christmas is coming up quick and I would like to be able to give my husband a working GPS. Thanks. Team Tindle
